While this timeline is certainly interesting, and complete (I thought I was the only one who played the second NES game), I've always seen it the was Nintendo described it. It's just always seemed like the same story, but told in a different way or with things added or omited. To me, the Zelda games have always seemed similar to oral story telling. One story says he had to collect so many pieces of the triforce, while another is more concerned about pendants and ladies. That's the way I've known the game and that's the ways I like it.

i've always known that they werent the same bloke running around in green. This is mainly because the first LoZ games i played on the GB could be linked and traded across so the two Link's in them were clearly different.

some qs for the timeline believers: how can a boy who clearly knows how to wave a sword around have to learn it again at the start of each game? and how is he STILL a boy? don't people age in there?

ah, what a mess.

I thought it was fairly obvious it was all different Links, no way one guy could do that much stuff in one green tunic in one lifetime...

It's probably better to not have a time line set, if the writers want to have a game where Batty the wind mage taking over the temple of time, Zelda as a pirate, Link on a fly island, or an underwater train they can because they're not the same world, dimension, or whatever.

I'd come to that conclusion years ago. Nintendo don't bother with timelines it seems. They just pump out copies of games over and over without any real thought to the changes possible, story additions etc. Don't get me wrong, I love Zelda games, and many other Nintendo franchises, but it's always been obvious that each game was a simple stand alone story that was meant to replace the older ones, not follow on from them.

Well, it is Legend of Zelda... so... they don't have to be directly connected... you know... like a Legend?

I like the idea of the Hero of Time in the world of the Zelda series kinda being like the Arbiter of the Covenant, different guy, same title and gear, brought to power in time of need. Maybe it's the same guy reincarnated, but still different timelines.

Well, at least it isn't a chain e-mail petition. Still probably wouldn't hold up as verifying all the YouTube user messages would be... painstaking at the least.

Yes, because nintendo abandoning one of it's most beloved franchises is sure to happen without this petition.

Nintendo sucks, the guy who complains about Nintendo sucks. Don't play nintendo, don't support them or their franchises. Don't bother petitioning because that won't do a thing.
Mario, Tetris, and Pokemon are the best selling game franchises of all time. Please take your trolling elsewhere.

OoT--> MM
WW --> PH
The above are factual. They say/imply as much in the stories/opening cutscenes.

I also see a link between Four Swords and Minnish Cap (and any other games featuring Vaati as the boss). I'm not sure how it works precisely but one seems to occur decades or centuries after the other, with Vaati taking the place of Ganon/dorf as the infinitely recurring villain.

The rest could easily be slotted in somewhere due to the constant resurrection/escape of Ganon.
My interpretation of what Nintendo has said is that they don't plan or make games according to a timeline. I don't know if that means they still put the effort in to avoid reboots or messing up any previously established lore, but personally I think they've done a good job doing so anyway.

I'm a huge Zelda fan, but does this really matter? It's not as if the games don't matter now. It's like when people freaked out because the new Star Trek did the Time Warp. It's not like your DVD's are gonna stop working just cuz J.J Abbrams got happy with himself. And that is true here. The games are still great no matter how hard Nintendo cops out about the timeline. Besides, if they pull the alternate universe theory, they can keeping making the EXACT SAME GAME with a few slightly different elements without worrying about the main character getting massive deja vu every 45 seconds.

More like 30...
But I sorta see it as every one of the storys is just a different version of the first one,that is what a legend is after all.A story passed down and slightly changed each time.
But I suppose it makes no sense for WW to PH does it?

You know what is odd? If it's "a new Link every time" then why does Shigeru Miyamoto himself say that it's Link growing up between two games, at E3 2009 (first question in the video below)? I think that it's just an easy way to not have to explain major changes and timeline disorders.

That's not the impression I got. You may have noted that he says "it's a completely different era". All he says about age is that "Link is older".

Our very own Moviebob puts on his Game Overthinker persona and takes on game continuity:
