The Games Industry is a darker place for his passing. He was one of the few CEO's I'd conciser 'fit' to run a company like Nintendo and an all around cool guy

RIP Mr Iwata

One of his best quotes that I heard from him:

"In our business, too often people with a fresh idea don't have a chance. I believe if Tetris were presented today, here is what the producer would be told: Go back give me more levels give me better graphics give me cinematics and you?re probably going to need a movie license to sell that idea to the public."

He said that back in 2005, I think.

Of course today, it would be more like:

"Make sure it's locked at 900P/30FPS, so we can avoid the framerate controversy, and because 30FPS feels better. Remove the T-block, because we want to make that a Gamestop Pre-Order exclusive. Also remove the straight line block. We'll make it so that the block is only purchase-able via DLC, and we'll call it "Easy Line Removals". Oh, and make sure to remove the Korobeiniki theme to make sure we don't offend anyone by thinking we're promoting Communism."

Wow, I didn't even know he was in bad health. 55 is way too young, he was younger than my dad is, and he seemed so full of life. This was also the guy who, when Nintendo's revenues were down, cut his own pay significantly rather than lay off any employees. I know we tend to build people up after their passing, but this was a genuinely great guy through and through.

That was...unexpected. I tune out for a while and this happens. Well...I've only marginally gone into Nintendo, mostly retro gaming, so...just as one human being to another...goodbye, and good luck, wherever you are.

I don't think I've ever felt this sad about anything gaming-related... A CEO who was actually a developer and gamer at heart, not a business man. Many times stepping down and doing programming himself to help a team finish the game. Not caring only for the money like 99% of CEOs, but actually taking pride in the work he and his company did, and being dedicated to bringing joy to Nintendo players everywhere in the world.

In an era of layoffs and obscene bonuses, he avoid cutting staff while cutting his own wage. Along with the level of joy and willingness to engage the community, even during Nintendo's down times, it was good to know that people cared within the company.

Rest in peace Satoru Iwata.

Jesus, only 55 years old... It didn't feel that long ago that I was watching him be so full of life in that Digital Event video of him fist fighting Reggie. This is just so sudden...
55 does seem too young. Sad to hear it. We are mortal. This kind of proves it. We are all the poorer for his passing.
