So a few months back I predicted in the forums that the next generation of game councils will be DLC only and if it wasn't next gen it would DEFINITELY be the gen after that. Well suddenly I'm hearing rumors of no disc reader being in the next Playstation and X-box.

Nothing much here. Just what are people's thought's on DLC only.

Consoles...not councils. Also, read up what DLC actually means. Digital download is not the same as DLC.

That being said, it does suck.

I agree with most of what you said. I'm personally down with DD but only if they compete with steam. If not, I'll get the steam console when it releases, or go to *shudder* PC gaming

Steam isn't that much better. Yes Valve has a better reputation right now but that too can change. And when it does, I won't even dare to show myself on gaming forums for fear of the shit storm it will cause.

That being said, don't look down on pc's please. As much as you might want to deny it, pc's are superior to consoles right now. Yes current consoles are great at what they do and if you like them all power to you. But PC's are still superior in...well, every way except exclusives.

Digital downloads are only acceptable at a reduced price. So long as Sony and Microsoft charge full price for the games then they will never find success. As an example Sony charges $100 dollars for AAA games on PSN that I can get for under $50 at retail. As long as that continues it will never catch on with consoles.

And I've heard rumours that they'll have a bluray drive. Also, it actually makes sense for them to have one, as consoles are also being used for other kinds of home entertainment, movies in particular. I doubt Microsoft or Sony would be...not smart enough to decide and cut down on their target consumers.

Dunno about the generation after next, though - it may very well not accept physical media 0 I can't hypothesize for it. It might or it might not.

Dunno, I like DD but then again I don't have a console. I suppose you're asking for console owners' opinions on it, so I can't really say anything on it.

that's fine, but realize, I LOVE the controller. It makes it easier to be immersed for me. I jsut can't stand Keyboard and mouse, and graphics, to me, are far from the most important thing.

I can't imagine the digital market is nowhere near as large on the current consoles as it is on PC. So, no - of course they'll have disc readers.

I think that hits it on the head. Digital Distribution has to be pretty much ready to move across all media forms before devices will take that plunge. Movies will likely be the first media form to make the leap; we can expect game consoles to follow at that point. Until then, however, consoles have become such great multimedia devices that it would be foolish to not continue to provide disc-reading capabilities.

They have come out very strongly saying that digital distribution will be the focus of the PS4, and it is a logical step for the industry, but I don't think they'll be committing 100% to that idea just yet.

Just a note here - music kinda-sorta already made that leap. Well, it's not 100% digital but it's of high enough up there. Point being, we have the transfer to DD in motion already, it's a matter of time of everybody embracing it more thoroughly. True, music has it easier than the rest but we now have the facilities and the technology for it, there is a bit to work on the infrastructure, though, and some shift in the consumer base. But once that is taken care of, we'll be ready to face technologies out of sci-fi - I mean we have wireless, we have DD, we have mobile devices already, the next logical step is to link them up more - there would be nothing stopping whatever the console generation is at that point o be nothing more than boxes that stream you content from the net. Pretty much anywhere, too.

Yeah, something like that. Or, heck, you could have your phone as your console - the bloody things may as well have the raw power in a few years' time, so why not? Handheld AND main console.

And that image reminded me of something - ever seen The First $20 Million Is Always The Hardest? Ugh, can't really find many shots or videos of it, but the trailer has what I need

Yep, that scene. This may in fact be tomorrow's computer. Or, you know, probably something vaguely resembling it

You know, you're right, I completely overlooked music as a digital distributed form. I suppose because I take for granted that it pretty much is near 100%. They still distribute CDs, sure, but who doesn't own an iPod or equivalent MP3 player, or have a smart phone with the same capabilities. Hell, my car has a HDD on it strictly for digital music.

The major point I was looking to make, though, is that consoles will probably be the last to make the full transition to digital, since they are multimedia systems these days in addition to gaming. The shift is happening, but it won't be as radical as one, or maybe even two console generations.

And let me just say, I don't have any issues with Digital Distribution; I love having over a hundred games available instantly with a click that takes up no more space than my computer. As long as pricing on it remains reasonable, especially when compared to the physical counterparts, it holds tons of very distinct advantages. The major issue still resides in crippling DRM.

And even when I was a console gamer, I had a lot of downloaded titles; being able to fire up a game with a couple of button presses is so convenient compared to changing discs; games ran smoother, and I didn't have to worry about scratches or grind rings or god knows what else manages to happen to discs.

Deciding to go purely digital would be a bad idea. Unless they're giving these PC-like consoles some PC-like storage space. Even then it's still a bad idea considering not everybody has internet, or good internet. And the way these new games look on PS4, they're going to be HUGE games. That just makes things even more inconvenient and would make the new consoles very not worth it.

I predicted the same thing. I don't mind personally as long as there's still a way to play my games at a friends house. Also I do like clouds quite a bit, like how Steam operates now. I do slightly worry about accessibility down the road if games go offline. A good example would be this neat racing game called, "Motor City Online" that came out years ago. You can't even play it now even if you wanted to.

Wouldnt this be giving game shops the biggest middle finger imaginable? Like a fucking Saturn 5 rocket sized middle finger.

You do realize that you can get gaming controllers for PC right?

I have heard them comment somewhere that the PS4 will be playable offline, so that suggests there'll still be discs. Sony is still Sony and Blu Ray is one of their many babies after all.

This is a good thing - as much as people like to trumpet digital distribution as the way of the future, there will always be a place for the store-bought retail copies. Games are getting bigger and bigger and not everybody has the time, patience or online capacity to download 10-20GB monsters whenever they want to play something.

Why Shudder?

Oh, and it has already been leaked that the next Xbox will have a BluRay drive...... So don't fret, and I doubt Sony (the guys who invented Blu Ray) would not include it in their new box. (though I don't recall it's mention in the press event yesterday.)

Im going ot be rather pissed if there's no disc reader. then i have to repurchase all my movies through the cloud and all my games (if tehy do BC which they should since they should have been doing BC before or at leat rereleasing games like Persona 3/4, SWBF2, Jak and Daxter series, ratchet and Klank and the sly coopers), and actually hook my PS4 tot he internet which my PS3 isnt even hooked too.

EDIT:

I would assume it goes without saying, since disc use is still very popular is most other medias (music, film, tv) as a ways of selling to the public. until theres a massive overhaul into cloud and digital download then I would think CDs are standard still.

You can use a controller on PC you know. It is the only way I can play sleeping dogs. Any old wired Xbox controller will do.
