Well, if they had a contract with Activision in regards to the use of their likeness, without seeing it myself, I can say that they have the right to sue for simple contract breachment, simple as that.

Exactly. I'd like to see the brief, or the appeal by Activision which was denied. The fact that they tried toget out of it under free speech is... an unwise choice.

Everytime I read the word 'lawsuit' and 'counter-suit' I cant help but think of Yu-gi-oh...

No Doubt: I ACTIVATE MY MAGIC CARD, LAWSUIT!
Activision: I COUNTER YOUR LAWSUIT WITH MY TRAP CARD, COUNTER-SUIT!
ND: HA-HA! I COUNTER YOUR TRAP CARD WITH MY TRAP CARD, COUNTER-COUNTER-SUIT!
A: HA-HA! I COUNTER YOUR TRAP CARD WITH MY TRAP CARD, STALL FOR TIME!
ND: NANI!?

Yeah, all this lawyer crap would be way cooler if it was a Japanese Anime...\

No Doubt's lawyers made specific mention of the ability to make band frontwoman Gwen Stefani sing the Rolling Stones song "Honky Tonk Woman," the result being "an unauthorized performance by the Gwen Stefani avatar in a male voice boasting about having sex with prostitutes," and called the whole affair a "virtual karaoke circus act."
This is just so funny XD

I'm not exactly law savy but wouldn't the use of Gwen's likeness be considered a parody which as far as I know is legal.
What about this would you say falls under parody?
in a male voice boasting about having sex with prostitutes

wow...that is incredibly petty. I just lost a bit of respect for No Doubt.
Not really. Can you imagine if they had Mickey Mouse singing "Smack my ***** Up"?

Disney would break the sound barrier serving that lawsuit.

At worst, its character assassination.

Well, that's kind of fun.

I mean, I'm no fan of Activision and I don't know the details of the deal No Doubt signed with them... but this doesn't feel too right.

And, really, why woud you even have- you know what, no, I'm not saying that.

Prodigy reference FTW. Now I have to turn my mp3 back on and give that a listen to.

Seriously, what the hell happened to letting people just have fun? In this scenario, I'd laugh my ASS off watching an avatar of Mickey sing that.

Of course, it's may just be my love for the completely absurd that I'd defend this. I mean, I'd love to see something like an avatar of Lindsay Lohan singing Bad Habit.

OT: Good luck, No Doubt. As you wander through the US legal system, I'll be in, roughly, the same condition I was when I learned of your suit - completely apathetic.

I'm on the bands side here. If it wasn't outlined in the contract and they have a problem with their image being mishandled then it's perfectly suitable. I still feel it's something that doesn't NEED to be a lawsuit, but hey...

Oddly enough, I see it as individuals standing up to a giant corporation, which means that I actually give them respect.
This is what I think of whenever I hear people talking about "big corporations."

Besides, it's not like we are talking about some blue collar worker going up against these evil "big corporations." We're talking about individuals who are worth millions of dollars themselves sueing over something ridiculously petty.

I mean really, is No Doubt so insecure that they are seriously afraid that a vidiogame that gives players the option to portray them playing other songs is somehow going to ruin their image?

Good No Doubt songs on Rock Band actually, must get that DLC later.

Didn't something like this happen with Courtney Love about Kobain a while back but no one cares because is Courtney Love and Kobain is dead.

You know if I thought they actually had any moral objection to the game, or their likenesses being used like that, I might feel some sympathy for them, but the cynic in me is screaming "cash grab! cash grab!"

My day = made.

OT: While I find it silly that No Doubt is taking Activision to court over something as trivial as an avatar singing a song that it was not allowed to sing, because the contract said so, it makes sense to do so, because it was not in the contract.
Violating contracts, no matter how minor, is not cool, and I think No Doubt is doing the right thing.
