I have a history of loitering around the Soul Calibur 4 online multiplayer. I love this game for whatever reason, but this isn't what this topic is about.
While on their I keep finding myself becoming the victim of the No Girls Allowed club. When I enter matches I occasionally will get sneared at for being a girl. One of my favourite most recent lines I had to take before being kicked was: "God, this is why girls suck at games, they have to cheat to beat a guy!"

why is it that girls have to take this kind of smack talk? I realize that there will always be smack-talk online, however it seems girls get attacked from the moment we enter a room.

Don't worry about it. I guarantee that if you were a guy, he would have called you a "fag" or "retard" and then kicked you.

It's because people online are idiots. When they say you cheat it should be taken as a compliment.

I think they don't want you around because they've never encountered a real woman and don't know how to act other than hostility.

Join up with a group of gamers on a forum or whatnot who are nice people and play with them, it's not as bad on ps3 than 360, but you can always guarantee a nice game if the people your playing with are nice people.

I was kinda surprised when it turned out that a Recon, who kicked ass, in Global Agenda didn't get any abuse for being a girl when she talked freely over voice chat. Global Agenda is obviously the future of society.

I get the same treatment, even though I rarely play as a girl.
Why? Dan Hibiki. People mock you when you play as him and claim that he sucks and blah blah blah.
Lose and they gloat. Win and they ***** about cheating.
I just happen to be good as Dan.

From my experience playing and watching girls play, I don't really see much difference in how girls are treated. Sure, the language changes, but people in online games tend to be pricks to everyone.

Because back in the 80s and 90s video gaming was considered 'a boys thing' So parents would sit their little boy in front of the console of choice and then get their little girl something pretty to look at. Thats just how a lot of parents do things. Also, many of the males online are either prepubescent little shits that shouldn't even be playing the game or whiny immature man-children who still haven't learnt to accept that someone without a penis stands a chance of beating them in a fair fight.

Don't worry, it's not because you're a girl, it's because soul calibur 4 has the most abysmal online community ever in my experience.
I tried getting into it for a bit, got shit talked at nearly every match (but never used my headset).
I wasn't great at the game and was just learning, so my kill to loss ratio was pretty miserable, and when I finally had the satisfaction of winning ONE OUT OF FIFTEEN games, the douche bag I beat took the time to private message me saying "learn to play with a real character ******." because I used Nightmare that match.
And that did it for me - never touched the game online again.

It depends on the game too. In competitive games you get lots of insults.
If it's a cooperative game, the little boys will drop their jaw and be like "oohhh, I em playin' wit a girlz." and do everything to help them. Which I suppose can be equally insulting...

Yeah, what he said.

Girls do get attacked more online, but thats because the attackers can just stick to that "she's a girl!" thing. If you were a guy, like Waybneguard said, they would have found something else to say. Probably "fag", "pussy", or something about him having sex with your mom.

Because most the "boys/men" you are talking to online have never spoken to a girl before and hearing the voice of a girl over a headset makes them either fearful because they don't know how to act, or they think "ooooh girlz letz me send her pestering msgz asking for nude photoz."
Basically these are the same people who you didn't talk to in high school because, well they don't know how to talk to you. Please understand that the fact that they spend their lives playing games doesn't help their social and communicative skills with the opposite sex.

Girls may get more shit for just being a girl, but guys will get shit no matter what.

I guarantee that if you had been a guy, you still would have been called out for something.

Gamers like that don't really care what you are. They'll find something to make fun of you for within the first seconds of meeting you and stick with that.

Well, I'm sure you know this but a good portion of any online gaming community are complete douchebags. Plus as every man has learned from his father and his father from his father the only way to pick up chicks is to belittle and harass them. Thats a deadly combination... toppled off with the fact that a lot of those guys lack a proper pair of balls and can't communicate with women in real life... things can get hectic.

Also on a more serious note:

I think a lot of that is just trash talk. Guys when competing tend to talk a lot of shit, if the guy has an accent you pick on that. If the guy has a high pitched voice you pick on that. If the guy has a low pitched voice you pick on that. If the guy has a mother you pick on that.

They aren't too smart so its best to pick on the obvious things... so when a kid or a girl comes on its natural to pick on that.

And a lot of it really does have to do with the "hey this is the guys thing" mentality a bunch of yahoos have. Don't let it bother you too much.

Oh and the "girl cheated" thing dont worry about it. Its 100% natural for every guy to believe everyone is hacking or cheating if they're not winning. I mean... I'm me... a super awesome man... how could anyone defeat my mad skills? Nobody... at least... not fairly!!! OMG CHEATERS!

Yes this is what guys actually think!

Girls not being good at games is a vicious stereotype. My gf is actually BETTER than me!

Do you make it obvious, without anyone asking or even giving an indication that they want to know, that you're a girl?

There's no need to broadcast it to the whole world, I honestly don't care.

People online in games are generally hostile, whether you're a girl or not. Anything about you that's different they'll latch onto and use it to try and take the piss out of you, whether it's being a girl, having a different accent, being a younger gamer, etc. Or if there's nothing obviously different about you they'll just resort to questioning your sexuality or accusing you of cheating.

Believe me, it's not because you're a girl. It's because the people you're playing with are immature arseholes.
