Haha, the amount of douchey elitism in this thread astounds me. Kids, grow up and learn to appreciate your toys for what they are, not for whose is better.

I like Halo because I find it fun. Also, I've been with the franchise since the beginning and I've simply grown fond of Bungie's story about the universe. In my eyes Halo consists only of the events between Reach and Halo 3, and nothing more. I didn't play Half-Life when it first came out, so I downloaded it a few years ago. I found it boring. Who's to say who's right or wrong? Just because one came first or invented FPS or innovated something special, it doesn't make that game any better. Somehow with the fanboy mentality, I have a feeling that people would still be jerking off to Half-Life if it had innovated the concept of poking yourself in the eye to kill enemies.

You have fun with your toys, I'll have fun with mine. If our toys are the same, we can play together. I'd like that. But until that happens, why don't we just agree to disagree and not be such pricks to each other?

Damn. I guess you never watched the news when "The Sims" was coming out.

You know, Duke Nukem 3D had a jetpack in '96.

I really thought it was Goldeneye 64 and Perfect Dark that popularized console FPS games. Hell, even Turok: Rage Wars.

Note that im not a hater on Halo. I actually love it! But heres my problem. When Halo came out it set a new standard for FPS, and almot every shooter has taken after it since. You could say its the core of all FPS since its release. But what does Halo possibly have that no other shooter has now? I know this is mostly from my opinion but creativity wise, there isn't much that has been added. Or at least not original to Halo. I just feel like when I play it, its beginning to turn into a blurry screen and all I see are the basics of all guns, armor, and vehicles in todays FPS. So all I ask of you is to tell me what Halo possibly offers that we haven't already seen? I just want to enjoy the series again before I turn into a hater of a game I truly loved.
All i have to say on this matter was that WITHOUT GOLDEN EYE YOU PEOPLE WOULDNT HAVE HAD YOUR HALO SO SHUT IT

Did you really just say that? REALLY?? REALLY!??!?!?!?!!!!?!!????!?!?

Anything with "Wolfenstein" in the title from Wolfenstein 3D until now
Doom
Doom 2
Doom 3
Rise of the Triad
Duke Nukem 3D
Heretic
Almost everything else based on the Doom engine (except Hexen)
Quake
Quake 2
Quake 3
Everything with "Unreal" in the title
Marathon
Marathon 2: Durandal
Goldeneye
Deus Ex
Deus Ex: Invisible War
Command and Conquer: Renegade
Timesplitters
Almost everything with "Half-Life" in the title
Prey
Saints Row
Saints Row 2
Black
Resistance: Fall of Man (Not so much in Resistance 2)
Red Faction: Guerrilla
Transformers: War for Cybertron
Gears of War
Gears of War 2
Dark Void

I could go on, but I think (hope) you get the point by now...

EDIT: Just to be clear, the emphasis of these games is fun over realism. The end result isn't necessarily what they wanted...
You lose points for not mentioning Team Fortress, but damn, that is a pretty comprehensive list.
O.T. I actually do like Halo; but it's main problem is that it was a decent game which was hated because a bunch of idiots praised it as "TEH GREETEST GAEM EVAR" however, that didn't stop it from being fun.

Halo takes more skill than any other shooter. I'm a cod4 man, but the balance in Halo allows a higher level of play. It's not simply see someone first and you kill them. There are no god weapons.
I really disagree weapons wise the only really overpowered one in CoD 4 is the P90 and that is banned from most competitive play. If you want to get into attachment 40mil as well but that isn't just banned from competitive play it also isn't even allowed on most servers. As I said I disagree but whether or not Halo takes more skill is opinion. Halo promotes weapon camping on the more powerful weapons which there are in abundant. It also really focuses on having ridiculous buffer of recoverable health through the shield. There are lots of things in Halo that really do suck the skill out of it. If you want to think it is the most skillful then fair enough but it really doesn't compare to CoD2 or 4 or TF2 or CS or a lot of other games skill wise. So in short having extremely vast amounts of health does not make a game more skillful than a game with extremely scarce amounts of health which is basically what you are saying.

Just thought I'd quote this since it was so well written. As much as the haters like to say otherwise, point out games that came before it.... face it... Halo caused a console FPS revolution that is still being felt today. Hell, no Halo = no XBox 360, period. You can't understate Halo's contribution to the console universe. Master Chief is Microsoft's answer to Mario.
No Halo did not make the xbox 360. Halo did contribute but without Halo there still would of been a xbox 360. Microsoft has been adamant that it wanted to take a stab at console gaming and try and dominate that and then move onto handheld gaming. Not having Halo would not have stopped this plan as there are plenty of other titles on the xbox that people love. While I am saying money from Halo didn't contribute to it but it was not the be all and end all of the xbox console series.

Whats the list for?, if your trying to refute my death dance claim then I'll counter it by saying I played those at pro level and "shoot well they die", especially Unreal since all the guns had special tricks to them that made them more powerful.
Could you care to be more specific? Which Unreal? And every player had access to the same weaponry, so how are they "more" powerful? Wouldn't they just be used correctly? I'd really like to know, because I've been a fan of the Unreal series for a very long time and I don't think that it had any cheat-mode with the weapons.

COMPLETELY DISAGREE. I will also go on a limb here and say that it doesn't really take much skill to pay either of those games you listed. If you know how to play an FPS you'll be great at Halo. I never played online and put a few BR burdsts into som, eone and they turned around and killed me. I have done that however, to many noobs i Resistance 2. I rarely play Halo anymoe(only if friends pressure me to join in) and I always do well. The game is more about who has the better weapon then who has the most skill.

-snip-However, I find it odd that you mention Heretic but not Hexen. -snip-
I deliberately said not Hexen because it was slightly more RPG than shooter, and the warrior class could go through the whole game using only melee attacks.

As for Team fortress, it started life as a mod, not a game, so I didn't bother listing it specifically, and considered the "I could go on" line to have covered it anyway.

There are PLENTY of games I left off that list. Team Fortress is just one of the few that's still popular enough for people to notice its absence.

Well to this day I haven't played another FPS that integrates vehicles and and on-foot sections so seamlessly.
This.... and fun... Halo consistently delivers a fun and invigorating experience, both single player and multi-player. The MP is brought down a tad by it's community, but I would still put the Halo community ahead of the CoD community.

Many things that are attributed to Halo were done before in previous games, like being able to use the enemy's weapons, dual wield, regenerating shields, sticky grenades and vehicles, but Halo's combination of all of these elements is unparalleled.
You guys should try I don't know... Warhawk? Tanks, jets on foot combat all in one.

Eh...Goldeneye sold 8 million copies, the Halo trilogy has sold 34 million copies and a shit ton of related merchandise...making it a considerably more valuable property.

I agree with you on principle, Goldeneye was great...the N64 controller was shoddy for FPS though(in my opinion). Maybe a part of the fuss about Halo was that it helped pioneer decent console control schemes for fps games?

I have always believed that the unreal franchise was more fun then halo however. But when bungie was bought by microsoft and halo 2 came out thats when their advertising and ability to flood the media with a halo craze started.

Halo offers us the Fuel Rod Cannon. I can think of no other game with a rapid-fire plasma rocket launcher. (exept maybe Quake's BFG)

The first Unreal in particular had a huge number of weapon interactions and tricks you could use to make the weapons more effective. One of the energy weapons fired an instant-hit beam for its primary attack and a slow moving explosive energy projectile as secondary. If you hit the slow moving projectile with any other attack, it exploded with a massive blast radius and a massive bonus to damage.

And the flak cannon's secondary fire hitting one of those blasts was great fun to watch.

Doom and Doom 2 had rapid-fire plasma guns with exploding projectiles.
So have a LOT of old FPS games.
And a lot of non-FPS games (mostly, but not always, based around space combat)

Probably the shortest argument I've ever written, but its true.[/quote]

I couldn't have said it better.
There is no FPS that i'm awair of that lets you actually play as much as halo does. It's got a huge amount of customization and forge mode is like a big delightful box of lego.

The 1st one didn't impress me and I've not been impressed by the franchise since...but it clearly has some appeal.

New standard? That parade of mediocrity?

Oh dear, oh dear.
Halo: combat evolved.
not halo 3.
Don't confuse the two.
You misunderstood me; the entire franchise is shallow.
So? Whats wrong with basics? I much prefer Halo because you can literally open it up out of the box and jump right in.
And that's fine. I prefer depth and story telling, but whatever. To each their own.
That doesn't really make sence as a criticism for a game although a story is nice in a game, it's not what people play games for. The game play is what ultimatly holds it up, and halo's gameplay is well above average.

I think it's funny the way that society has changed in recent years. What artists and writers used to call "inspiration" is now classified by gamers and reviewers as "ripping shit off." Well guess what? GTA IV ripped off New York, Medal of Honor is ripping off current events in the Middle East, and every parent that ever named their kid John is ripping off the Bible. I guess we're all just ripping each other off for all time.

If they do a better job of using it than the other games do, it's not ripping off. It's improvement. Get over yourself, more people like Halo than most other FPS.
