Summary at the bottom if you don't want to read...

Pt. 1:

I just beat Dead Space for the 8th time so far, with different difficulties, different weapon-only loadouts (try only flamethrower), and only lvl. 1 armor; my point is quite frankly that I love Dead Space. It has the perfect setting, story, weapons, and everything else in between (I wish that there were 3 more chapters, but it is a small complaint for me) that makes for one fun game. My first question is: What other games are out there that are like Dead Space? I heard that RE4 is supposed to be good, but that is only one game and I want other horror suggestions as well. (I have PS2/3, Wii/G.C., and a powerful P.C.).

Pt. 2:
This got me thinking, what other games have you fellow Escapists played that you have lengthened the play time by doing unorthodox things that the devs. would never dream of, or just can't stop replaying? I went through MGS3 7 times and MGS4 around 12 times just playing with different strategies or trying to perfect my runtime/just for the hell of it fun runs messing with the soldiers. I beat HL2 3 times because, quite frankly, it is that fun.

In summary:
1. What games would you recommend that are like Dead Space?
2. What ways have you extended a game beyond the original scope that the devs. had in mind?
3. What games have you beat too many times (5, 7, 20, ...).

While I personally tend to play games in a fairly conventional manner, my friend has beaten the Halo PC demo by
-using only the pistol
-using only grenades
-not killing anything.
This was, mind you, a demo of one level in Halo PC.

I have, however, tried to beat TWEWY while using all the beginner pins. It didn't end well.

As for a game I've beaten too many times, I'd say RE5. Mostly for speedruns, though.

I think it depends on the game itself whether or not I'll replay it. Bioshock was a great game but after 2 playthroughs didn't hold my attention. Generally Sandbox games or games that aren't completely linear tend to be more appealing for me to replay...Fallout 3, Mass Effect, Crackdown, GTA, and Kotor are examples of some of the games that I've played over and over. I'll usually play them over trying to do things in wierd ways or trying to cover sides of the game I haven't seen yet.

As far as reccomendations...meh theres really no new games out atm that I would say are must buys...maybe infamous or prototype but those aren't exactly like Dead Space...meh july sucks.

I beat All the Halos by only using the melee. I also let enemies rde in my vehicles in multiplayer games.

resident evil4 on first playthrough and i am loving it
Yeah this was a game that I played through a number of times, mainly because I didn't know about a lot of the stuff you can do and had to go back.

I find it hard to really find a game with great replay value nowadays that aren't rpgs. I think most developers have figured this out, at least when it comes to fps, and that is why most fps games get an online mode so even though you aren't playing through the story mode again, you can at least go online and play with random people.

The only game that I have that I continuously play over and over again is an old copy of Heroes of Might and Magic 3 on my pc that I tricked out with some wog moding.

Other then that there really haven't been too many games that I would just go through the whole game more then three times. Except for Little Big Planet, for obvious reasons.

Resident Evil 5, the only reason I stopped playing it for right now is there's nothing left to unlock except MP characters.

Go for a knife only run in RE4. There is a couple places you don't have a choice but to use a gun but other than them.

Thanks for all of the replies, but all I got for recommendation so far is RE4 (in terms of horror or general gameplay style).

Half Life. I try new weapons and setting up mini fortresses out of cars and boxes and stuff.

I also lengthen play time by going to every house during the driving mission. Fun, but time consuming.

I don't know any good games to suggest that are horroriffic.

But what I do is I generally dicker around by making up what would happen the day after.

Games I've played over and over would be.
Assassins Creed (no alerts besides assassination/Hidden Blade only)
Far Cry 2(Stealth/Certain weapon type only)

I can't think of any more at the moment.

Far Cry 2 has a lot of replay value, as does Resi 4.

Crackdown also has amazing replay value. Try creating a different agent every time.

I play DooM 2 almost weekly. Partially because ZDooM/GZDooM take a nanosecond to load, partially because Skulltag is brilliant, partially because the game offers an adrenaline rush like no other game, partially because of the hundreds of WADs available for download. I like shiny new guns with shonky sound effects.

I find most FPS's dont have much replay value (specifically Halo) but I'm currently replaying Fallout 3 and Dead Rising. Fallout 3 just has so many things to do that its hard to play it only once, espcially now that there are four DLC packs for it plus a 5th on the way. and you can never go wrong with Dead Rising's constant zombie slaughter

I read an interesting idea on gamefaqs about a No Crime run through of GTA4 but honestly what is the point in that?

I've never played Dead Space, but from what I've heard if you have gotten that much replay value out of it, that's awesome.

RE5 has tons of replay value. 4 difficulties, tons of upgrades to spend gold on (the rotten egg glitch ruins the experience), able to jump to any level after beating the game, different filters, and since co-op is so much better than solo, it's fun to just jump into a level when you have a friend over. Even if they have never played, you can just give them unlimited ammo.

Other than that, the only games with good replay value I have played are Kingdom of Paradise and Age of Mythology. I wouldn't beat them multipul times in a row without a few months gap here and there, but try not to set down KoP for too long, or you'll just be lost. (Hmm, I wonder if AoM is still installed...)

Give Bioshock a try. A game that I've beatin numerous time is spiderman 2 and Medieval 2 and Rome Total War. Those are the only ones I can think of at this time.

I've never found that playing the exact same game with a slightly different self-imposed challenge to constitute actual replay value. For me, replay value requires at least a certain degree of actual variety being available in my next playthrough, a different way to play out the story, a different main character, things like that. Playing the exact same thing, but with a Pistol only (or some such) is just plain boring...
