No Right Answer: Best Bond Movie Ever

In my book this is a close call. Goldfinger gave us two of my favorite all-time Bond lines. One of which was mentioned: "Do you expect me to talk?" "Noooooo Mr. Bond, I expect you to die!" and at one point Bond sees Pussy Galore and says simply "Pussy" in that wonderful Sean Connery accent.

Goldeneye, on the other hand, was the first Bond movie that I ever saw (or at least remember seeing), so it holds that value. Also Goldeneye 64 was one of the greatest FPS's ever made. Back in the day, if you didn't have a Nintendo 64 with Goldeneye, you knew someone who did, and you were over there constantly playing it.

Buuuuuuut in the end my vote goes for Thunder Ball. Why? Because there is a literal underwater war fought between Red-Suited Divers and Black-Suited Divers. This battle goes on for so long that if you're watching it on a channel with commercials, the battle will start go for 10 minutes, cut to commercial, come back, and the battle goes on for another 10 minutes! Alllllll underwater, so nothing but knife-shanking and spear-gunning. It was brilliant. Also it has one of my favorite Q lines of all time: "I really hope there's some gratuitous sex and violence on this one, James."

And on a side note: Joe Don Baker......frickin' lol. If you haven't seen the episode of Myster Science Theatre 3000 in which they do Mitchell, do yourself a favorite and look it up on youtube. It's fucking hilarious. :3

Wow, not a whole lot of love for Casino Royale here, but... Casino Royale wins for me.

My reasoning was that bond was getting stale. I'm young so I'll admit I wasn't overly familiar with the rest of the bond films until later, but I grew up with Pierce Brosnan. And Goldeneye was pretty damn good. And Tomorrow Never Dies was decent. And then World Is Not Enough, which was formulaic and bland. And then Die Another Day, which was just too ludicrous to like. "Kill him? I'll use the laser!" . James Bond was getting tired for me. Then Casino Royale comes along and says "SHENANIGANS!" and then what's this? James Bond is serious? The villain isn't some wacky cartoon character? CARD GAMES?

Moreover than that, Casino Royale is a unique movie in and of itself. It isn't run of the mill action, it's got slow meaningful scenes and fast paced action that juxtapose together very well. Skyfall was good but it didn't top CS for me.

On another note, just to start fun, who was your least favorite bond? Mine was Timothy Dalton. I don't remember ever being more bored during a James Bond film then watching License to Kill. Then again I have ADD and ooooh shiny

As much as I absolutely adore Goldeneye, for me the best Bond movie of all time is Skyfall. It's so incredibly well made and well filmed, the entire movie just breathes the air of a true spy adventure, without losing the old school Bond charm. Anyone that says the Craig Bonds aren't really Bond any more (because too serious or whatever) haven't seen Skyfall.

To be honest, I think Goldeneye only gets so much love because of Goldeneye 64 and because its sequels were so appallingly bad that it stands out by comparison. I'd probably say that Casion Royale and Skyfall stand well ahead of it, as do From Russia with Love, Thunderball, You Only Live Twice, and The Living Daylights. Hell, I'd even throw a bone to On Her Majesty's Secret Service ahead of Goldeneye, if only for the end credits sequence.

Goldeneye is my personal favorite one for a lot of the reasons that were said. and though I loved Judi Dench's M, I hated that she was in the daniel craig ones because it makes goldeneye's tension between the two, not fit. But both movies are good and since we're on a golden strike I think we should pay tribute to The Man with a Golden Gun (and three nipples)

There are two things that are being forgotten here.

First is; Dr. No has Jack Lord in...so it is the best James Bond film...Book him Danno, Murder One.

Second is Dalton is the only actor to have actually played James Bond as written, therefore Dalton is the best James Bond.

A third thing is Alec Guiness as Smiley is better than any Bond, and Michael Caine as Harry Palmer is better than anyone as Smiley.

I just rewatched entire Bond series this month, and I believe that "Die Another Day" was the one I enjoyed watching the most - it refined on badasseery, godassery, gadgets, evil plots, crazy twists, and every other element introduced in previous movies.

To be honest both good and for different reasons but liked the lastest 3(yes even Quantum) as i'm a realist ***** and they were closer to serious realism that most any from before them by a country mile. Also they linked it into the 2012 olympics for comedy realism.

Die Another Day might be beating it out now that people think of it as the film that nearly killed off the franchise.

Really? I don't know where people got that idea- it grossed more than any single Bond movie that came before it.

Also why NOT use the North Koreans as an enemy? If you had to make a list of nations most likely to qualify as a bond villain nation, then you know as well as I do that NK is right up there, if not already at the top.

My take on Skyfall, it's a bit long...

Have to agree with you- Skyfall just didn't have it together at all, and Q needs to be fired, if not hanged outright. And yeah, MI4 WAS a better bond movie- even with the team dynamic that goes against Bond films.

Coincidentally just watched Goldfinger last night!

Here's a quick list of Bond's accomplishments:

Wears a stupid bird on his head for no reason.
Uses a girl as a shield from blunt force trauma while making out with her. Electrocutes assailant.
Steals a different girl from Goldfinger, skronks, gets her killed for it.
Interrupts said girl's sister from getting revenge, sets off alarm, gets her killed for it.
Crashes car into a brick wall.
Gets kidnapped.
Writes note to CIA which ends up in a garbage compactor.
Gets kidnapped some more.
Gets his ass kicked by Pussy Galore, then forces himself on her (oh, she gives in at the end, cuz that's what women do).
Electrocutes Oddjob (with wires exposed by Oddjob's hat-throw).
Is unable to diffuse the bomb at the end; some random steps in at the last second (007 seconds) to save his ass.
Shoots out an airplane window, which conveniently kills the villain, but was clearly unintentional.

Now, I know Bond films are not meant to be taken seriously, but he literally does nothing right in this movie.
Archer, the parody, is a more competent spy. So was Austin Powers.

I started giggling at the start of that, and by the end I was holding my gut laughing. It's so true! It reminds me of the one sentence summary I once read for For Your Eyes Only: Bond kicks a car off a cliff.

Yeah, I didn't mind it. It was the most all out- entertaining since Goldeneye. You can count it's problems on a single hand. Quantum, however...

You should check out From Russia with Love and For Your Eyes Only if you want gritty realism. Hell Octupussy has it's griity-as-anything plot and moments, too.

Though Moonraker might get the prize for 'worst Bond Film ever' it does have the wonderful redeeming feature of a) being a key staple of my childhood, and b) featuring the best Bond-Girl name ever. Pussy Galore might sound fun, but compared to the subtle smut of 'Dr Goodhead', it feels rather obvious.
It's something that your average 10-year old will never, ever cotton onto, despite the perverted snortling of some elder brother in the room.

Hmm, for me it would be this:

Connery = From Russia With Love or Goldfinger

Moore = Live and Let Die

Dalton = The Living Daylights

Brosnan = GoldenEye

Craig = Skyfall (which I'd also call the best Bond film)

I don't like George Lazenby as 007 or an actor at all, but On Her Majesty's Secret Service is one of the great Bond films in terms of story, script and support cast.

I'm just going to throw in my thoughts on the "Odd Job" being overpowered in Golden Eye (N64). I've never seen that thats been the case. The auto-aim system always aims at center mass, just above the diaphragm when your view is completely level. With most characters that hits them in the chest. They decided to make Odd Job really short for whatever reason, so short, that his head becomes that chest high center mass. You can fire straight ahead, or aim down just slightly, and get head shots on him all the time. I learned this two ways, when I first got the game I always picked Odd Job, then I noticed I was getting shot in the damn face all the time. Secondly, whenever anyone else played as Odd Job, I could shoot them in the face with no effort. It was harder to shoot normal height characters in the head, because you had to look up, but look up enough to counteract the auto-aim, which would aim at their chest.

Really the best choice in multiplayer was Trevelyan, simply because his dark clothes allowed you to hide in the shadows more effectively, especially in the cave and temple levels. Most other characters had at least some piece of bright clothing on them that would stand out, but Trevelyan's clothes were just a muted black/grey.

As for best Bond movie, I'm going with Golden Eye as well. I liked Brosnan as bond, and the supporting cast was enjoyable, Alec, Ourumov, Boris, Xenia, Natalya. Pretty memorable characters. Although if I would've been born 30 years earlier, I'm sure Goldfinger would be my favorite instead. My Dad still loves saying "Pussy Galore" in his bad Sean Connery voice.

I don't like Pierce Brosnan as James Bond, I don`t think he has the charm or even acts well enough for the job. However, I do feel Sean Connery had it all, AND he was a badass when he had to, I'll stick with another one of his The Satanic Dr No.
HOWEVER, it was indeed Pierce Brosnan with Goldeneye that revived an otherwise dead series, unfortunately the following movies were awful (The World is Not Enough was sorta cool though), until Daniel Craig came, and saved us all.

I'll admit to not having seen enough Bond films for this to qualify as an informed opinion (only 5 films), but my personal favourite, and I think one that will be looked upon in the future as amongst the best, is Skyfall. It's just a very well-made, well-acted film that has a good but easy to follow plot (unlike Quatum of Solace I thought), and Judi Dench really stole the show.

Okay, I was willing to allow you the first bit, but seriously, "Die Another Day"? For comparison purposes, it helps that I watched "Skyfall" then "Die Another Day" very shortly afterwards, but they are in a different league. Obviously things are muddled by the change in tone in the Craig series, but "Skyfall" has the better plot, the better acting, more interesting locations, more intrigue. "DaD" makes not a jot of sense, and while the villain could be better than Rauol Silva, arguably, he's utterly ridiculous when you consider that this is supposed to be a North Korean colonel.

I always have difficulty with this question as Goldeneye is without doubt my favorite bond film, if its the best per se I'm not so sure but I'd probably say so. For me it has always been and always will be the definitive bond film, I'm simply of that age.

It also clearly has the hottest bond girls of any of the films. Also some of the very best quotes.

I'd also venture that it is exceedingly difficult to decide on a best James Bond as, like with, say, Dr. Who, there will always be your Bond - the one you grew up with, who shaped your perception of who Bond is and what he does.
