Hurray for Back to the Future! Love those movies so much. Didn't realize it was made into an animated series, though. That's kind of weird.
Everything in the 80s got an animated series. Everything

Good save with the Lord of the Rings comment at the end, but may I suggest another possible trilogy in the 3 Daniel Craig Bond movies?
If the villain of Skyfall was a clearly a member of Quantum then you could consider it a trilogy but I don't think that connection is ever explicitly shown in Skyfall and without Quantum as a constant antagonist there's no real plot connection between the first two movies and Skyfall. I don't think they even mentioned Quantum in Skyfall.

And Chris Pranger with a major stinger at the last minute.

This is the kind of thing where I feel like making a dumb joke and say Metal Gear Solid is the best movie trilogy, but they went and made the 3rd game a prequel and somewhat necessary as part of the experience of the 4th game. So I say... Star Wars I guess. I mean, it has magic and science, how can that not be awesome? (oh.. yeah)

Back to the Future, hands down the best of those 3 trilogies

Also Chris is right
This is the reason it is best to watch all 3 LotR movies in a row because it is one 10h long movie
I decided that I wouldn't watch them in theater, but rather wait for all 3 movies to come out and watch them all together
And that was awesome (although it is hard without any energy drink :) )

It's hard for me to come up with a good trilogy cause I utterely hate Star Wars, Indiana Jones and LotR and have never seen Back To The Future. In fact I don't think there is a decent trilogy. It has weak second movie or it has longest possible but awfully boring / full of pulled from the arse things third movie or it wants to make more money and has fourth/fifth/... movie. Star Wars is the example of last, Spiderman/Pirates of the Caribbean of second and again Pirate of the Caribbean of first (that's because I like third movie and hate second, but most of the people hate third and love second).

The closest I can think of as the best trilogy is Batman Begins / Dark Knight / Dark Knight Rises. The third one is kinda weak but it still not that bad. And Ocean's 11/12/13 - just because I love empty casinos =)

LOTR is my pick for Best Trilogy. Though it is one giant 3 movie long story.

BUT if you go with the first trilogy structure of 1 being a standalone movie and 2 + 3 being a combined story, I liked Pirates of the Caribbean. It followed the structure to a T. Not serious, just fun. (Assuming we all ignored the 4th)

Of the 3 picked I like Indiana Jones best. Last Crusade really was the best XD

Hey, don't knock on something getting an animated series; sometimes it expands the story and builds up the world it's set in. Case in point: The Clone Wars.

No, the reason things can't remain just trilogies is because executives won't stop ringing every last cent they can out of a property and we as fans won't stop eating it up like pigs at a feeding trough.
I think STAR WARS will take the prize for this reason, because Episode VII is in pre-production in order to make SW the trilogy of triligies it was going to be years ago.

I would classify that as "made into a trilogy just to make more money". The first was amazing, but the second and third were... just... er... they just shouldn't have ever existed.

I can't really say this since it isn't out yet, but if The World's End is as good as Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, that will be my favorite trilogy (Three Flavours Cornetto trilogy [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Three_Flavours_Cornetto_Trilogy]). Not a "traditional" trilogy, but I think it still counts.

Um, what? Then Star Wars won, because neither Back to the Future nor Indiana Jones have any real plot connections across the movies.

I'm going to go with Sin City, and hear me out on this. Yes, it was released as a single-viewing 2-hour movie, but it had three very clear parts to it: The Hard Goodbye, The Big Fat Kill, and That Yellow Bastard. And, by eschewing the "standard" format for a trilogy (one story, second story, third story) by splitting up That Yellow Bastard, Sin City is able to provide a lot of context implicitly within the other stories without resorting to unnecessary exposition.

Unless we aren't limiting this to movies and we can get into the old school trilogy format (novels), in which case I'm going to go with The Kingkiller Chronicles (no, I don't care that the final book hasn't been released yet).

The second is my least favorite and is pretty damn crappy, 3 is slightly better but not good.

I wonder how many people will comment LotR before even finishing the video. Then go, "Oh, right then."

Also, Alien Trilogy.

I propose its a trilogy because they're the three that Ridley Prime actually lives through.

If lord of the rings is not a trilogy, back to the future isn't either.
Exactly, and Star Wars isnt either then, since the last 2 movies could be considered 1 story as well.

... eh why hasn't anyone mentioned Diehard, if Indiana Jones can miss out 4th film, then Die hard can as well even though 4th die hard film was very good but just not as good as mofofocking Die Hard 3 with a vengeance. Had Samuel L mofo jacksons for peek sakes!
Die Hard 1 awesome, Die Hard 2 - is Die Hard 1 with planes just as awesome, Die Hard 3 - mofofockingly awesome

I don't think that excuse at the end really works for LOTR. Star Wars is just as much a 'single story' as LOTR is. Incidentally, I would vote for that. :p

Also, I read Lord of the Rings was almost 6 movies and the three that were made left out a lot.
I've never heard that. According to the 'making of' for the films, they were going to be two originally, then PJ's first studio demanded he condense it into one or be replaced. Eventually he went to New Line and ended up with three.

I highly doubt any studio would've gone for six. Bear in mind that making a trilogy like LOTR was considered nigh impossible back then.

But yeah, a lot was left out.

By that logic we would have to disqualify Indiana Jones as well because he doesn't fight the nazis in all 3 movies. The 3 new Bond films are connected thematically and through Bond's character growth (which are both new things to the Bond series, but that is a different discussion altogether), not by what villainous organization he is battling.

OMG, I'm so glad to hear someone else mention the Kingkiller Chronicles. I'm so looking forward to the third book when it eventually comes out. For those of you that haven't read it yet, you need to. Absolutely some of the best fantasy writing I've read. If the third book is as good as the first and second book, then it would win hands down.
