In the military you go through a week long defensive exercise during basic training that is kind of like a final test.
Five days, no sleep, in foxholes.

By the third night, guys start losing their shit, and seeing hippopotamuses and shit in the trees. Not to mention the course staff fucking with your heads.
The whole point is obviously to see how you function under stress and without sleep. Luckily, at the point in your training, everything has become instinctive. You don't suffer from sleep deprivation because you are a robot.

The longest I've ever stayed awake for before was around 30 hours and I felt like shit. A whole week will kill you.

Don't do anything you wouldn't do drunk. That's about the only piece of advice I can really give. You probably won't die, but keep some friends around in case you do. They should make sure you don't do anything stupid as well.

Really, I think the main difficulty you will face is that sleep is fun, and deprivation highly unpleasant.

I've actually done it before, of course about 3 less days. I was looking for Call of Duty in my room when I just shut down and when I woke up I started seeing ants trying to eat me, I was crying my heart out when I saw Call of Duty, I was like WTF was I doing? Of course that was years ago.

I don't think it's the lack of sleep itself that would kill you. But the fact that you lose balance, energy in your limbs and so forth.

Imagine falling unconscious while next to a table. You could knock your head on it and crack your skull.

I think you should do it.

I'm not being mean; I really think you should try it. So long as you absolutely refuse to drive, or put your self in a position of any responsibility where others might be at risk, go right ahead. Oh, and do not drink from actual glass or eat with pointy utensils. Assume that anything that can go wrong... just might.

You need to experience this to find out for yourself what sleep deprivation can mean to you. In fact, you should take notes. "Day 1: I can juggle. There are 5 fingers on my right hand. The sun is bright, and I can look at it briefly with modest discomfort. The sky is blue."

Jerry Garcia died in a diabetic coma, mostly because of previous years of substance abuse. Yet when asked to do so, he patently refused to advocate against drug use. Everyone knows its bad for you; but some people like it, and you should be allowed to make the choice.

I have personally hallucinated from lack of sleep, and I know others who have done similar. I think its important to learn early in life; that we're not indestructible, and there are real limitations to what the human body can do.

Very dangerous. I know that hallucinations can occur after the fourth day, and will only increase in quantity, duration, and strength as the lack of sleep continues. Illness and death are also quite-possible outcomes.

This is not something to mess around with.

That must be one hell of a bet if your willing to go 5 days to a week without sleeping. I myself can't run without any sleep, I remember last year I was on a class trip to Washington DC (which is about 5-6 hr drive from where I live) and we were on the worst possible bus ever I swear to god I couldn't get comfortable the entire ride because I was too tall for the seats and the head rest was level with my neck (and I didn't get the window seat) so I couldn't fall asleep and I was awake the entire ride to and from. I was awake for about a day and a half and on the ride back I started hallucinating that the road disappeared and we were flying because they turned off the lights in the bus because everyone (EXCEPT ME) was asleep and it was pitch black in the bus and all I could do was stare out of the front window.

So it wasn't very fun for me but you might not be affected but then again you just might be affected. Also I think it's bad for your mental state but I don't know for sure seeing as I know nothing in the field of medicine.

A simple enough question, is staying awake for 1 week straight dangerous? I made a bet with a couple of my friends about it.

No I won't be driving or doing anything that I shouldn't be, also I'm not doing drugs.
Having suffered from insomnia on multiple occasions I certainly can't recommend it. You start to feel like a crazy person after 2-4 days, with the hallucinations and tricks of the brain becoming more and more vivid as you progress. Also, you'll physically start to feel real bad as your body aches for rest.

But! It is possible to go 5 days without going insane or dying, it'll just be insanely unpleasant and with the hallucinations and your brain getting muddled someone will probably assume you're a crazy person. Also, with a possibility of permanent damage of course.

I always say "sleep is for the weak," but that's for one all-nighter. The longest I've gone without sleep is about 37 hours. Then I started blacking out while I was walking!

One of my friends told me about how he was up for four days straight. He walked into his bedroom door because he thought it was open.

3 Words: Sleep. Deprivation.
Uhm......

OT: It's pretty dangerous, but without help you wouldn't make it anyway. The brain would just shut itself down and force you to sleep.

Ah, sleep deprivation. The legal (and free!) drug.

Give it a shot, like alcohol and that herbaceous plant they don't like you talking about, gotta try it once.

as far as i know, longest anyones survived without sleep is 10 days, but most people would be dead before then... depends on how you're doing it... if you're self-medicating with caffeine then your heart will give out as you slowly increase the amounts to stay awake...

if you're not using caffeine, you'll just fall asleep anyway... "i'm just going to put my head down for 10 seconds" and you wake up 14 hours later with a beaten up neck... not fun
