I haven't cried but it was very sad in Silent Hill: Homecoming
when Josh dies
or in Silent Hill 3
when Harry dies.
But the closest I've come was in Silent Hill 2, the whole plot line is sad, saddest game I've ever played.

I've never cried, but there are a few moments that really affected me, particularly in Half-Life and Mass Effect.

Eli's death and Alyx's reaction, this was the closest I've ever gotten to crying over a video game. The next one would be on Virmire (I think) where you have to choose which of your human teammates lives and which one dies.
That point in Mass Effect DEFINATELY. Nothing stressed me out more than
trying to talk wrex down, and then being forced to make a REALLY hard decision about which character lives. I sat there twitching between choices for about 10 minutes before I finally made up my mind and saved Ashley.

edit added spoiler tags. sorry bout that.

I think games don't really cause tears because they defy death itself. I think after seeing our protagonist die about 50 times and pressing quickload we simply stop caring about death in the game. Prince of persia for example, so many times characters die but since you just press rewind time and go back, death becomes a one button obstacle.

FFX was the one I can remember most, such an amazing game, ended up playing the game for like 200 hours before I decided to fight the final boss which conveniently made me more attached to the characters.

The only other one I can think of was Lost Odyssey. Thinking about it, I think it's all down to Nobuo Uematsu! Such an amazing composer and has something to fit every mood.

For the main character yes. I think the point is to get you attachted to your companions, other characters besides the protagonist. Generally though, your comrades get killed, they ain't coming back. so there can be a real emotional moment their.

With Tidus disappearing. Fuck you FFX-2 'Good' ending bringing Tidus back. Pissing all over my feelings from the end of FFX. NO. He should stay dead.
Lost Oddysey is just generally depressing. I didn't play it for that long admittedly but some of the dream thingies are really sad ;(
Sniper Wolf's death made me tear up.

Probably more, but I can't recall right now.

I felt really bad when I sent Ashley to her death in Mass Effect, but nothing really made me cry.

What WOULD make me cry is if Dog from Half-life died.

It wasn't so much crying, but i ran proudly into battle yelling "For Agro!!" after that daft horse fell off to his "death".

me and my friend actually felt as if a dear friend had died.

no emotion in games, PAH!
admittedly some games miss the mark completely, but a well-written, well-executed character can actullay make you appreciate them in-game.

Like The Horse from SotC.

Side note: after i ran proudly into battle i realised the last boss can shoot lasers from his hands, with horrific amounts of knock-back and plummeted half way down the same tower...

it was a long climb back to the top...

Mass Effect Virmire mission, and in the end of Half-Life 2: Episode 2. The Half-Life 2 one nearly brought me to tears...

Shadow of the Colossus: Agro's fall. I was actually stunned that it happened.

FFX: The ending. Definitely strikes a real chord whether you like the characters or not. "Those who are dear to us who have been lost...never forget them." (I'm paraphrasing obviously). It's so damn sad.

Lost Odyssey: Any of the recalled dreams. Actually the first time a game got a few tears out of me.

MGS3: The ending. Finding out all the details about The Boss, and the one part where you actually have to hit the button to pull the trigger. I haven't beaten 4 yet but I'd have to say that this was the best ending in the series so far.

Klonoa (PS1): The ending. MAN it's a downer.

It got a little dusty in here when
Aeris died in FF7, because I played that game before the Internet was around to ruin things for me

Zidane reunited with Garnet at the end of FF9 (not a death, although it sure looked like one, but it was such an unbridled moment of joy)

Nei died in Phantasy Star 2, if only because of the utter hopelessness of existence her life and death represented

I know grown men who admitted to openly crying at Aeris' death scene during FF7. And these guys are like...thirty-five.

Come on, hit her with a Phoenix Down, she'll get better!

In the 20+ years I've played, I've never ever played a game that has made me cry.

But then again, no movie has either. Or a book.

Made me laugh? Yes. Disgusted and squicked? To a point. But sad? No. Cry? Doubly no.

As for someone mentioning the choice in Mass Effect...
All I did was some stat measuring and based who I'm going to save on that.
