Remember when Glados says "Congratulations, you euthanised your companion cube faster than any other test subject on record."? Yeah, I thought that was because I *had* euthanised it so fast. That box was in the incinerator quick as can be. Stupid box.

Heh, my second playthrough, I had found a way to keep the box the rest of the game, no cheats needed. I loved that little guy...Or girl. Whatever it was...

The end of FFX, because of what happened to Auron and realizing that you just broke Yuna's heart.

Oh, and when Sniper Wolf shot Naomi. I didn't want to go back for the sniper rifle because I didn't want to leave her.

SPOILER
MGS4 Naomi's death. Saddest moment I've ever seen in a game (and yet sadder than anything I've seen on TV or in films)

You know, I couldn't help but feel like she was being a ***** to Otacon. "Are you crying for me?" I was a little sad at first, but it just dragged on and on. It was ridiculous to me.

Lost Odyssey was amazing, purely because it is the only game to bore me senseless after just five minutes. I don't particularly like JRPGs anyway, but *damn*, that was some kind of record.

Someone mentioned KH1, but the ending of the sequel really got me. I mean, after two (three including the GBA one) whole games of searching, he FINALLY finds his friends, FINALLY everything comes together and they're back home. The final movie was a real release of emotion, and it all came out. Fortunately I was alone and nobody had to know, but now I've told the entire forum so hooray for that.
I cannot play Knights of the Old Republic on the dark side. My favourite character (Carth, naturally) keeps having a go at me for it, and every time I do something bad and he gets mad at me my immediate reaction is "oh gosh I'm so sorry I didn't mean it please have a teddy bear and a medkit I'm so sorry I'll never do it again ever!"
The whole companion cube thing went by me without incident. I was having too much fun, you know, PLAYING THE GAME :)P) to worry about a cube with a heart on it. I didn't even know I was meant to be sad until weeks afterwards.

Games bring out emotions, especially the, "wha - did they just do that? Oh my gosh, that's so - damn!" kind. Like the famous twist in KotOR, or the end of Half-Life 2: Episode 2 (which, incidentally, didn't make me sad, it made me want to beat the bastards to death with a crowbar).

I was sad about Master Chiefs isolation at the end on Halo 3. Nice reference about how great men are often forgten by history though. Sure, his name is on a plaque, but his deeds arn't... They are remembered by old men in museums who reflect upon models in glass display cases.

Lost Odyssey was somewhat sad if you read the stories. That is about it though for video games causing tears.

You know, the more I think about this article you posted the more I believe the writer is an idiot. To not do his research and make a quote like that... He probably believes Mass Effect is a XXX alien-porn game too.

EDIT: I checked the web site again. I had posted a comment there - apparently they took down the comments section for this article.

Alot of people think that games are as deep as a puddle of spilled pepsi, but there are a few gems out there that really let you connect with the characters you're playing as.

I just finished Time Hollow yesterday, and i remember in one section becoming enraged at the evil-doings thrown at me,
in fifth day when
jack
is killing off all your friends and every time you try to fix it he does it again
I was actually enraged, i couldn't understand his motivation, it seemed like he was evil for the sake of being evil. (the ending clears up the plot)

I've never felt enraged at a character in a movie, not once have i stood up and yelled at a character in a movie "Stop being such a C**T!!!"

so don't tell me that games are less emotional than other medium.

sorry for the slight off topic, but why does the only emotion that matters have to be one that makes you sad?

Lost Odyssey is about the most emotional game I've ever played...

The games main storyline was absolutely filled with emotion especially the end of disc 1, but the "dreams" that you could find were, to be honest, truly magnificent and a few almost made me cry. I really did feel so very sad for all what Kaim had been through in his life seeing people he knows die, fighting in endless amounts of wars, witnessing genocides... Really well written stuff.

The end of Okami, twice actually. Once for when Issun left Amaterasu and another when Issun got everyone to pull a "clap your hands for Tinkerbell" moment to revive Ammy's powers. I had to pause the game in the middle of the final boss battle and cry for a few minutes before I could finish. I hear a lot of gamers didn't like Issun, but I had a lot of begrudged affection for him, so the last two hours killed me in the best way. :)
Thats the nearest I've come to tearing up over a videogame... Go Issun!

I guess I ain't the only one who likes issun(annoying as he is) especially at the end(I'm actually getting teary thinking about it..)

MGS3, the final boss(tears and sympathies) and sorrow(fear and sympathies), those guys were awesome especially their backstories

Megaman X5(say what you will, I still like the game),zero. I'll leave it at that for those who haven't played

Oh, and the cheshire cat in american mcgee's alice(and a mention to the poor dorm mouse and march hare who want their teamate back)

I find that I do get less emotional over the deaths of characters in games. Maybe that's because it happens so frequently in so many games, at least for me, since I'm not the best gamer in the entire world like some guys who beat games in a matter of days are. When games, or even movies for that matter, have lots and lots of deaths in them, the impact of each one is greatly diminished. It's when there is only a few deaths in a film that each one hits harder. I'm sure there are a few games like that too. I'm thinking mainly about the death of the character you are playing in games. The only emotion I usually feel when my character dies is frustration. I get that "dang it! I screwed up again" feeling. Sometimes, the deaths seem cheap, almost like getting a bad call in a football game or something. Then I feel like "that shouldn't have happened! That guy shouldn't be able to kill my guy".

Ummm, I am probably going to burn for this, but what game are you taling about? "Hides behind rock"
*Nukes rock*
Call of Duty 4.
FOR SHAME.
You guys know that in the very end mission-mile high club- at the start when they are cutting their way into the plane you can clearly hear both gaz and the scottish guy from the flashback? The scottish guy (the one that taught price in one shot one kill and all ghillied up) says: "shuurley("surely" with a scotch accent) you can't be serious" and gaz replies "Oh I'm serious...and dont call me shirley" at least thats who it sounds like talking to me-the scottish voice might even be soap himself speaking for the first time? his surname was mactavish. Haven't looked into this though so feel free to shoot my theory down in flames :)

The end of MGS3. I cried with snake.
And samurai warriors 2 but that may have been because the nagamasa/oichi story really did end that way.

But I'd have killed Gaz myself if I could

I've never cried at a character's death, but I rarely do anyways. I will admit to having the same level of emotional reaction to certain events in games that I had for characters in books and movies, if not more so, because these are characters that, if the game is good at immersing the player, you have been controlling as an extension of your self for the better part of several hours. There's a small feeling that someone you actually knew has just died. Books and movies just cannot achieve that same level of immersion, if you ask me.
