Yojimbo and Seven Samurai are great films if you don't mind subtitles. Actually that can be said for Most Akira Kurosawa movies. Also, I'm not 100% on the name of the movie but I think it was called Mirror Mask or something along those lines. VERY cool flick.

Red Cliff is a good movie series that I recommend. You can try Hard Boiled or the Joy Luck Club.

Also, you can try out Eden of the East, Grave of the Fireflies, or any Studio Ghibli movie if you want to give anime a check.

Definitely these as well as a collection of shorts called Memories.

Amelie, City of Lost Children, and Jean Cocteau's Beauty and the Beast (La Belle et La Bete) are three must see French films. A Little Romance is another- a sweet film about a French boy and an American girl who fall in love.

Life is Beautiful (La Vita e Bella) is a fantabulous Italian Roberto Benigni film. Another all time fave Italian film: Cinema Paradiso.

Someone already mentioned Pan's Labyrinth. Awesome movie. Another Spanish film is The Orphanage. Very scary.

English films? Wow, so many. I'll just go with my all star Team Python: Monty Python and the Holy Grail, The Life of Brian, Time Bandits, Brazil, and The Adventures of Baron Munchausen.

I've always wondered how people who were insufferably cheery would react to that movie. Head asplode, maybe?

Here's one I picked in High School

Knockin' on Heaven's Door [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Knockin'_on_Heaven's_Door_(film)/]

It basically plays out as a sort of 'bucket list' movie. Two terminally ill guys get drunk while in the terminal illness ward of a German hospital, decided 'fuck it' and go on a bit of a bender.

The comedy is pitch black but also sort of sweet. Eagle eyed viewers will also recognise Rutger Hauer and keep an eye for Til Schwigger (sp) who played Hugo Stiglitz in Inglorious Basterds.

Flame and Citron. It's about resistance fighters in Nazi-occupied Denmark, very suspenseful and it has some cool action as well as great acting. I highly recommend it.
I can vouch for that one.

Bonus fact: It is a true story about the two most famous members of the Danish resistance.

For a foreign but still English language film, watch The Ghost Writer, a slow, brooding, intelligent political drama that perfectly captures the coldness and harsh qualilties of the setting it depicts right down to the very last frame.

If foreign-language films are more your game, Waltz with Bashir is a great choice. The art style is original and intergral to the film, and some of the scenes will stay in your mind long after the movie is over.

And it's a true story? Coolio, I thought it was purely fictional.

I would go so far as to say that Flame and Citron is one of the best movies I've ever seen, not just a great foreign film.

It ends on a huge downer though, that's the only thing I can criticize it for. Not really a valid criticism though. :p

Goodbye Lenin was a movie that I always thought interesting.

Hibernatus or just about any movie with Louis de Funès. He's not well-known in the US, I think, but in Europe he's called a genius of comedy.

Amici Miei by Monicelli is another one and it's good. Don't watch the sequels.

Cube is an indie foreign film popular in nerd circles. It's a psychological/suspense horror, "Kafkaesque" gets thrown around a lot in describing it. Let the Right One In will also undoubtedly be mentioned as well.
Cube is a great one. After watching it I had a few dreams about it xD

Pandemic is probably the only good one I know of. If memory serves me correct, and my brain juices are flowing well, then it was remade into a movie called quarantine. Oh there is also another one I have heard of, but haven't dared watch. It is called martyrs, it is a French piece that I think is on the cusp between massive torture flick to one-way viewing mirror to the 9th level of hell. If you or anyone else do decide to check out martyrs then please email me about it, I want to know if my suspicions are true or if they are the just the incoherent mutterings of someone who has scared themselves senseless.

Sorry I can't be of more use. I guess you could go to your closest DvD rental (We just call it a Video shop) and check out the foreign section, that is of course, if you have one. Alas your search for a decent foreign movie will probably be fruitless, you will most likely end up with a Japanese samurai/ninja film that could be called art but is more accurately absurd, unless of course, you like that sort of movie, if so then your search will bear much fruit.

Well that's what happened ;P If they changed the ending it woulden't be accurate. They were betrayed by that double crossing b****, Citron held out against the Nazis until they got to him and The Flame took a cyanide pill in his parent's basement.

Come and See. The best movie ever created. It's a Russian film about the Byelorussian Partisans during WWII, it's haunting, disturbing, and amazingly beautiful. Also the German films Downfall and Stalingrad are excellent as well, but I tend to like WWII films that aren't about the Americans stomping on Nazi faces and being generally the end all badasses.

I suggest "Franklyn," a UK movie. 4 different storylines, one of them very out there. All in all a good watch. If Canadian works for you I suggest "Bon Cop Bad Cop." It's not "Canadian so it may as well be American," but uniquely Canadian. It's "Lethal Weapon" but instead of black cop and white partner it's anglophone cop and francophone partner.

Pans Labyrinth. It's beautiful, imaginative, and all in Spanish. Overall a great choice for a foreign film if you like dark fantasy.
Definitely check out Pan's Labyrinth.
Also, Let the Right One In. Showing us how to do a vampire movie the right way.
