Whee! Opinions are fun, folks!

I will agree with you that Mass Effect 1 had a better primary storyline and some better RPG elements, but I disagree with you on everything else. The characters, combat, visuals and replayability were remarkably better in Mass Effect 2, at least in my experience.
There were too many of them to get a proper handle on the characterisation/development, and the only good characters were the ones from the first game. Do you really think Miranda, Jacob, Jack, Mordin, etc. were better than Kaidan, Ashley (even if she was a racist *****), Liara and Wrex?
Mordin, Thane, Samara and maybe even Miranda were certainly equal to if not better than the characters from Mass Effect 1 (excluding Garrus, Tali and Wrex).
Mordin alone is easily the best developed and well-written character in the series so far.

Liara in ME1 suffered from being a little too much of a walking codex entry, and her romance subplot was awkwardly paced. Ashley and Kaiden were both perfectly solid characters (Ashley more so), but neither one really stood out to me. Wrex, Tali and Garrus were my favorites in ME1.

I lost my first Baldur's Gate 2 save. I had a level 20 fighter! LEVEL 20! I just could not go back to the game after that.

You're out of luck. Mass Effect 2 shines particularly well at being a pipe run, so you might as well watch the water flow instead of playing those 40 hours again lol. Mass Effect 1 had its moments in this respect, but not that you had nothing to do for at least 3 more playthroughs (going to other places with Mako and some exploration in general), but ME2 is barely worth 1.

Something very similar happened to me on Oblivion, I just restarted it and knowing what happens kind of takes the fun out of it.

I have more or less given up on my PS3 after it having more system problems then my Xbox and it not being able to run some of the best PS2 games ever (GoW 1/2 and Battlefront 1/2).

Besides that, I hate it when that sort of thing happens. Hours in and just I as I think "I should hardsave" it crashes. Grrrr...

Meh.

I constantly deleted Oblivion characters who have over 75 hours of playtime. I only keep 1 save file, plus the auto-save...Seeing more than 2 save files on my load screen annoys me for some reason.

Try loosing 257 hours of your like to a Fallout 3 save that decides to get buggy. And the only soltution I got from Bethesda? Load an earlier save. IT WAS THE ONLY ONE I HAD *cries*
This is why I have 75 saves at any one time for every 15min on Fallout 3.

OT: That sucks, but like I said I never have less then 10 saves that are more then an hour apart.

Well, this just happened to me yesterday in Mount and Blade: Warband. 42 hours in and shit hits the fan.

What you could do is actually hard save every now and then. In that case if this ever happens to you again, you don't have to completely restart.

40 hours?! I beat Mass Effect 2 in less than 15! (I skipped everything because I thought that game was awful)

I think some of the characters in ME2 are well-written - well, most of them are, because Bioware are good at stuff like that - but I just didn't think they got enough compared to the squad in ME1. There were too many to have a clear favourite and some of their sidequests were lazily done and didn't give them the characterisation it should've. Add in the DLC and support characters and it just turns into an overload of underdeveloped characters.

I actually never used Mordin after he became a squad member so I might have to replay it sometime and check out what he's like...

Well I've got a Dead Rising 2 game where I've leveled up to 50, I've rescued almost EVERY single survivor, I've killed as many Psychopath's as I could find, I've got the Best ending going, I've spent about 30 hours and multiple playthroughs to get to this perfect ending, I'm on the second to last mission.......and my attack button won't work. So I can't do any damage to opponents basically screwing the entire game for me. So I feel your pain dude

This is why I save neurotically, all of the damn time, no matter what the game is or how far I've gotten; I swear I spend 65% of my Quake IV sessions staring at "now saving". The worst that happened to me was that I was halfway through the Elite Four in Pokémon Blue and the batteries in my GameBoy Color conked out. I rebooted...and found that I had last saved before Cinnabar Gym. FAIL. I feel your pain ;~;

That is your PS3 punishing you for playing it on a PS3. Mass Effect 1 wasn't even released for PS3! Playing MS2 without a MS1 save is like playing a game that has had half of the content cut at the last minute.

I lost 100 hours on Final Fantasy XII and 45 hours on Enchanted Arms. I'm sure you'll manage.

holy funking shizz i just was playing mass effect 2 in the overlord mission. up until that point i had done literally everything possible in terms of side quests, dialogue actions, weapon upgrades etc and was almost done the story. then bam game freezes on a loading screen and i reset the system. next thing i know new game is the only option available. maybe i should turn off autosaving or something to prevent this from happening further?? DAMMIT! has this happened to anyone else?
Start over?
Your 40 hours are gone no matter what you do.
