Yawn.

North Korea tests a weapon.

The world shakes its collective fingers at North Korea.

North Korea shrugs and waits until it wants more attention and does it again.

Repeat process until someone gets blown the fuck up.
Pretty much. The papers I was reading today were up in arms about the strength of the explosion, which was apparently 'as powerful as the one that leveled Hiroshima'. So the North Koreans are up to WW2 tech. Thats laughable!

Don't worry guys! The UN are sending more angry letters! And we all know how well those work.
Also at the above post: Yeah, laughable, entire cities levelled and hundreds of thousands dead. That sure is so obsolete it's useless...

if a country has them, all countries have the right to research and develop them.
And yeah that makes perfect sense, other countries have WMDs so let's let completely insane violent dictatorships have them as well! While we're at it why don't we hand a few over to Al Qaeda?

Nothing, they're too pathetically weak to do more than annoy us.
True, very true. They're nothing. But even if they have nukes, you can't just attack them. You don't want Hiroshima all over again.

What I didn't get though was that America went into Iraq for "supposed WMD's", meanwhile N.K was blatantly testing their Taepodong-1 intermediate range ballistic missles without a worry.

Easier said than done when they have a truly fanatical regime and million strong army.

Here's the thing.

The North Koreans have their interests at heart. The US has it's interest, as does everyone else. It's a whole big convoluted clusterfuck where everyone and everything is trying to do the best they can at intrigue. Manipulation, fear-mongering, propaganda and all other political techniques are pulled and wanked at times like these.

Leave it to the Chinese. Dirty commie vs dirty commie. No one from the uk or us dies, NK is no longer a problem and China have less power because they just fought a big expensve war and gives further proof that communism does not work. If NK has a one million man army, that means the chinese only outnumber htem 250-1. Good odds for anyone.

So you value Chinese lives less because of what country they happen to live in. What a great person you must be.[/sarcasm]
Second - they only outnumber them by about a million once you count reserves, and I have my doubts they'd mobalise their entire military to it in a hurry, wheras NK most definately would. Either way it's not as clear cut as your simple "OMG COMMIES" little mind seems to think.

Basically if it comes to armed conflict it will be very short. Waging a war is a very expensive pastime and I can't see N.K being able to sustain their armies in the field for long. As for a nuclear strike.. I don't see N.K being the first to fire for obvious reasons and neither will America or China, again, for obvious reasons. As it has been said before in this thread the North Koreans don't have the bollocks to do anything and they just want a bit of attention. Can ya blame 'em? Shit if I had nuclear weapons I'm sure I'd show someone.

Often realism > idealism. Countries like North Korea just simply can't be allowed to have nuclear weapons.

Well, take a look at a night time photo of the area:
(with an outlay of the country outlines)

South Korea - Bright lights and clear signs of strong economic development.

China - A few lights; some clear signs of development.

North Korea - Blackness. Few or no lights at all.

N. Korea is like Stalinist Russia, with the people completely cowed to follow the leadership.
On the other hand, North Koreans might just have enough common sense to turn their lights off when they go to sleep. Except Kim Jong-Il in his palace.

I reckon he might get America and China to invade at different fronts if they continue after that and create and new cold war.

Can't really have a "COLD" war if we send our troops in now can we

Very true. I liked it better when war was simple.

I'm sure you would rather send chinese guys rather than your own as would most people. And the commies are the ones with decades of human rights violations. It also makes more startegical sense for the chinese to do it, common border and everything. And it really woudn't take the chinese that long to mobalise an army capable of dealing with NK.
And no, its not that clear cut, there would be long term ramifications to consider such as creating a sustainable democracy and the reunification of north and south but sending in china is the most simple solution and the safest for the uk and usa

Send in China though and you will never get rid of them, just look at Tibet.

Well, yes - the cold war here would be between the US an its allies and China and its allies over a potential conflict over ownership of North Korea - the actual warring vs Korea would of course be hot. Things go the way they went last time, there would end up with a North, Middle and South Korea, which would just get ridiculous, lol.

Maybe, maybe - they don't need street lights given the lack of cars, I suppose, heh
