I believe I'd spoken about this very topic not too long ago. Well, just be wary when saying even remotely bad about anime, because trying to talk about it without being flamed is like attempting to navigate a minefield without a metal detector.

Well yea, i think you miss my sentiment in there.

What i mean is for the mainstream, even among gamers, its just assumed that all of us like geeky and nerdy things... comics, starwars/trek whatever you are, and boobs (and yes this is valid ladies because gamers are still largely assumed to be male even if it isnt true. thats just the way it is at this point.)... its just a generalization that may have no bearing on the gaming community at large.

Its just easier when you can profile people in such a way.
:/ Still not catching on... I understand what your saying, but I just don't see it as a connection, unless you're Japanese. I can count the number of people on my XBL friends list that like anime on 1 hand. And none of them are from Japan.

Neon Genesis is teh best evar! But really I find that this anime balances a great storyline and action. For those of you who haven't seen the action, go to youtube and type in end of evangelion then report back to me on your findings.
If you value your sanity, don't do this.

I am not an anime fan however since my brother loves anime I've seen some and I have to say even though most anime is just plain weird there are some that I really have enjoyed I like for example Fullmetal Alchemist and One Piece this 2 are the only ones that I actually follow but I actaully found some others like Azumanga Daioh and Lucky Star to be very funny but most anime just make me say WHAT THE FUCK WAS THAT!!!!!

I liked Neon Genesis Evangelion until they decided to take it down a philosophical, dark "bullshit" route (the first... Twelve or so episodes are really good). I liked Ghost in the Shell until I realised they had hoodies that had camoflage, and noone's ever managed to explain to me why the men got them, when the women needed to be naked.

Then my nan got me Urotsukidoji : Legend of the Overfiend for Christmas a few years back because she thought it'd be a decent "monster trashes city" movie. I still own it, but noone talks about the night we decided to watch it as a family...

My last chance I decided to give the medium was Naruto. Why... Are ninjas in bright orange and yelling a lot? People like this shit!?

Hell, I even gave Manga itself a try after that. About halfway through the first book of iDentity, I came to a page that had two of the main characters in swimwear and had the title "GRATUITOUS FAN SERVICE PAGE!". Fuck it, I tried, it's just fucking awful.

I agree with you... but its just a stigma from people who dont care to really dive into game culture but assume they know enough about it to make generaliztions about all of us...

I personally dont think games and anime are related... games are 100x better.

Edit: Spelling. cause my ass got schooled.

Now that makes sense. Responses don't have to be wordy. It's 430am here, I don't want to look at all those letters. lol.

Oh, just as a little correction I thought was funny, its STIGMA, not STIGMATA. Thats where crazy people think they're getting the same injuries jesus got when he allegedly got nailed to a pole.

Edit: Apparently Firefox wants me to capitalize "jesus" as it is red underlined.

I've never been able to get into anime. I tried, but everything I watched was pretty much the same and all 'not my thing'. I guess that's an open invitation for people to throw out names that'd make me change my mind, but... yeah, at the moment I don't really get it.

Its a gaming forum. Of course most people will like anime.
I realized this about 10 minutes ago. Thats why I made the tread.
I don't like it as a genre in itself but it would be unwise to ignore the best parts of it just because.

Watch Cowboy Bebop, Akira and Ghost in the Shell. For me those are the best of a bunch. Of course Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke too.

Eh, Sturgeon's law (90% of everything is crap) seems to be very true, even applying to anime and manga. And this is coming from someone who enjoys anime and manga a lot. I'll admit there's a lot of cliche or just plain up weird shit there, but then again, a lot of stuff has cliche and weird shit. I have found that, the animes/manga that are good, are really really good, and those that aren't as good...well...just don't watch 'em

I wouldn't say that I am an Anime fan, but there are Animes that I watch. I like to judge things on an individual basis and not assume something is shit just because it's slightly related to something else that I didn't like.

I never really understood why people watch one show, not like it, and then completely write off an entire genre because of one bad experience. It's an incredibly shallow and lame way to go about life and you will miss out on some great stuff just because you didn't have the balls to give it a shot.

I'm not just talking about Anime, but any form of media.

For example:

Evil Dead =/= Shaun of the Dead
Bones =/= Law and Order
Medal of Honor =/= Call of Duty
Halo =/= Gears of War
Die Hard =/= Any Steven Seagal movie.

One of the items may be something you really love, but you may absolutely hate it's counterpart. Anime is no different.

I am not saying that everyone should like Anime. You may watch every Anime and find out you absolutely hate every single one.

All I am saying is, I hate it when people go around saying every [insert genre/media here] is terrible, when they haven't experienced every one.

Main reasons

1. Filler. Even the most condensed storylines in anime consist of 90% crap. And even of that remaining 10%, the action scenes (which are the only redeeming quality) amount to very little of it.
2. Voice acting (applies to both japanese and english dubs) NOBODY. FUCKING. TALKS LIKE THAT.
3. Overused character archetypes and story cliches. I don't even watch much anime and whenever I do I almost always get the sense of "I've seen this shit before."
4. Anime humor is not fucking funny, and even though this is partially acknowledged by there being a retrospectively small amount of comedy anime, it seems to try to weasel its way into even the spr srs crap. Hey look he fell into that girls boobs and she hit him! Oh man, now someone said something stupid and another character responds by falling down! OH GEE WILLIKERS! Now the animation has gotten all weird and the characters are confessing their love for someone/thing. Ho man, what will they think of next. Plus there's usually that unfunny "joke character" in anime, and law ensures that it'll be in a serious situation at some point and fuck that up too.
5. When it all comes down to it, Japanese writing is MUCH different than western writing, and if you're like me and don't like that style it pretty much kills anime storylines completely.
