Okay so this was an absolutely hilarious "study". Don't really think anyone would take it seriously but funny nonetheless.

Lower birthrates is great, Japan already has too many people living there. Now if only the rest of the world could follow suit.

It's a common sign of a level 5 society. Finland is in the same situation. The country is so advance, and human development is so high, that birthrates decline, because people are more concentrated on their career, or the culture of 'hot dirty action' has all but dissipated.

I know Japan is famous in the west for their questionable hentai porn scenarios, but generally, if you mention sex to a Japanese person, they will recoil in embarrassment and try to avoid the subject, or just run away (Like, literally, they will.)

It's a very sad state of affairs, but every country must reach this stage eventually. I think a few European countries are getting to this stage at the moment. Estonia I THINK is next in line. After that Britain.

Yeah, I guess I was. This thread was one of several I have read over the years on this topic and all the commentary and so on adds up. And as par for the course with my 10 year love affair with life in Japan, I am pretty protective of it, especially that what Japan actually is and what the Western view of it is, are so different. And yes, this study originated in Japan, but the commentary which has wound me up over the years has not been.

And you make a good point to add to mine, and sadly neither are ever raised in any English article I have ever read on the subject. That's a problem, but maintaining the stereotypes of effeminate anime obsessed guys who are no match for Western manliness and girls who are just itching to get some. Sadly, from my experience, those girls would rather go shopping. *sigh*

Anyway, you point that men are feeling the other side of the women's rejection of traditional women's roles, is a good one. If I felt that my 'upping the ante' with a girl might constitute a possible future threat to her social and employment independence, I would take a step back. More has to be done, if not already, to examine this aspect of the equation, rather than viewing baby making as some kind of mechanical thing, and possibly that is because it is MEN who do these studies in the first place.

Also something which I didn't mention is that the West has fought a long and at least metaphorically bloody battle against sexual oppression and repression, for freedom of sexuality and sexual expression. Consider that in Victorian times, some piano owners were compelled to place a curtain to cover the legs of their pianos, because the curves were tantalizing to some who viewed them.

Thus, Western culture has become such that sexual expression, which ultimately is the act of sex, is highly emphasised. There is a lot of peer pressure as well as social pressure. Look at the title of this thread! As I said, in Japan, it seems that teens and 20 somethings would rather go shopping, singe karaoke, get drunk and then go home. Add to that that they most likely live in homes that aren't too private, either to the others living there or their neighbours. My first apartment was a room, and once my futon was out, you had enouh room to skirt beside into the 'kitchen' and then to the bathroom and exit, if needs be.

Needless to say, the sex never really happened in that place.

Actually, looking at the last few years of my life, I think I'm turning Japanese.

It's not that we're so terribly advanced and developed in the western world. It's not even that we are richer, it's only because we started to play nice.

Fundy and traditional religious cultures and sub-cultures(christian, muslim and others) will never reach that stage.
They'll keep multiplying, because they hold on to the old unfair rolemodel, which works so well. They may be unhappy, but that's never held any group back, more like the contrary.

Modern lovers have little reason nor pressure to stay together when the passion inevitably dies (science says the infatuation lasts 1 to 2 years). Both earn their own money and neither one does the household. They don't need eachother economically.

The old ways will take over again, unless society can find a way to promote having children outside of marriage, for the good of community.

Out of curiousity... isn't Japan already pretty crowded?

From an evolutionary standpoint, breeding less when you've run out of room and resources is not an illness, it's smart. Also, I MUCH prefer anime and disinterest as a birth control measure to the laws that have been put into place in China.

Similarly, finding a way to be happy when you don't have a girlfriend is not a serious illness... it's a survival strategy. Now, if your dream girl/guy/whatever throws themselves at you, and you're not asexual, and you still can't accept it... maybe there's a problem there. I hardly think that's common enough to be an epidemic, though.

So what this piece is saying is... every single man should book a flight to Japan to bag some fine young thing (considering none of the apparently have boy friends).
That's what I'm getting from this.

I'll get us some plane tickets, you bring the beer.

[sub][sub]Not really, I'm engaged, but I likes to make the funnies[/sub][/sub]
That last bit reminded me of this for some reason:

Also, I have a woman as well... >.>
Same here XD Love the first Turtles movie!

OT: Seems abit silly for a sociologist to come out and say this as proven fact and putting the blame on otaku's and nerds in general. There could be many reasons as to why people don't have partners, labelling it as "oh its cause you like anime and manga" smacks abit of short-sightedness in my opinion. Sure by this definition I'm sick and need attention but I already have a girlfriend, who was attracted to me by the very things this article says I'm sick for liking, namely anime and manga...

It's basic Human Geography. More Advanced society by a rule of thousands of outlying factors that the birthrate will decline. The population ages, and there is less fertile young adults to have children.

Niger for example is the polar opposite of Japan in this situation. It's birthrate is through the roof, but infant mortality quickly cancels it out. So in turn there are hardly any old people in Angola, but plenty of children. But only a few make it.

Japan has lots of old people and the number of old people will keep ballooning until there are just too many old people to handle, that's when a certain turmoil will happen in the country, bursting that balloon, and the process will start again. As I said, basic human geography.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_geography There is links to what I'm talking about somewhere on here I'm sure.

It's just an inevitable part of a country growing up.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Population_pyramid This will highlight the problem, as a population pyramid becomes a population mushroom. It also shows the countries that are experiencing this change.

And yet Russia plus the former soviet republics are showing the same sympton and outside the big cities those areas are neither rich nor advanced.
Seems more like a cultural thing to me. The soviets suppressed religion and were progressive when it came to gender equality.
I can't see people saying "hey people are dying all over the place, now I'm in the mood to make babies".

I had actually heard of this study before, but haven't been able to actually verify the actual findings themselves. I've only ever heard of the generalized conclusions and the spoken rhetoric. Which is part of why I'm not entirely comfortable with excepting his findings. If you can provide a link to the actual case study, I'd greatly appreciate it. Otherwise, frankly, I question the validity of it. Especially given it appears his findings were drawn from samples taken from first-world populations and assumptions were made for the rest.

If I was wrong, then I was wrong and I accept that. Either way, I prefer more clarity on the matter. If only to educate myself on the topic further.

Eh, as strange as this "2D fetish" thing is, I'm all for Japan's population rate dropping. The world's kinda suffering from an over-population crisis right now. Plus, with the decline in numbers, Japan will be forced to sink more money into robotics and computerization in order to ensure their factories are efficient (the alternative is that Japan would open itself up to immigration, which is laughably unlikely).

Yes, it is a little strange that so many have such difficulty talking to real people, but the positive silver lining is that with a decrease in population, there is a decrease in resource demand.
