My guess is that players would once again have to travel to the sky dimension through portals, as with the Nether, but I have a much better idea for getting back down. Water slides. That is all.
Couldn't help but think of this after that idea.

So this is different than that one floating island I found that I failed to get a screenshot of, right? Though to be fair, this was only about 8 cubes off the ground, but it was cool because there was nothing "holding it up". Anyone else experience this phenomenon naturally? As in, not by carving away at the base of a mountain or something.

Once again the community already beat notch to it, this has been done before.
It's almost like 2,251,281 people can cover more ground than one guy.

Notch is so shameless in his taking ideas from mods.
Its his bloody game...
You don't even need to say that. The original comment was inherently flawed.

If he didn't "take ideas" there would literally be nothing left to do. It's similar to movies that "Steal ideas". We are what? 10 thousand years deep into written human history? It's probably been done.

- - -

The Aether people will just slightly modify their mod to run off the official code and end up with a smaller mod download and less things to work around. Frankly it'll probably be all wins for them.
It also helps that, y'know, people have been clamouring for floating islands, carving out floating islands, building by hand more goddamn floating islands,... It's not like he got the idea specifically from the Kodaichi people.

Or the Kodaichi people asked him to see their work.

'Sides, if Notch builds it directly into the game rather than as a mod, it'll likely be less glitchy and mesh better with the game itself.

The odd ropes of lava and water look a little strange, but otherwise, I like it. It'd be really fun making a huge skyborn castle complex, bridging together islands and stuff.

See my second point. They'd just accuse him of ripping the mod off. Then they'd go on to say that he didn't do enough, and affirm that he's abandoned Minecraft.
They wouldn't say he didn't do enough if, as I mentioned in my alteration to your second point, his version is better than the mod. Sure, they'd still point out he got his idea from the mod, but there wouldn't be the same degree of outcry as when he's using an idea from a mod and making his own version of it that looks worse, as appears to be the case here.

I think notch has been playing terraria
You think he's been playing a game that includes 3 to 6 flying treasure islands over a landmass that's 80% grounded and underground because he's trying to make an all-floating landmass zone?

That seems like a pretty big leap to make. And a silly one. Newsflash: Terraria is not the first game to implement floating islands with treasure chests on them.

I mean, hell, you might as well look at this article and say, "I think Notch has been playing Mario 64." It's equally reasonable as a comparison for "games that have arbitrary floating islands."

I'm not normally one to go about defending Minecraft as a pinnacle of innovation (it isn't), but good lord, you guys are really stretching here.

Yeah I root for them both. Notch is wonderful at what he does and these modders have done a fantastic job. I just thought it was obnoxious the whole "HE'S A THIEF" thing.

The aether is the inverse of the nether.

He had already done one it was inevitable he'd have done the other.

I'm just waiting for someone to say "He added Potassium into the game?! OBVIOUSLY STEALING IDEAS!"

Eh, I would prefer that they work on more objects and mobs for the regular world than starting a brand new dimension. Nether worked nicely but this just seems the same as dry land only in the sky.

the way it is now, id rather just stay in my underground city Menzoberrazan. were the humans (me) stay in the city carved into the ceiling, and the creepers haunt the lands below.

but if there was some new epic thing in it, like planes. Id play in the clouds for the rest of my days.

At least you'll know when to stop digging right away...but really, if people want floating land masses they make their own. I did at least...

Right him taking the ideas of modders modding HIS game and putting it into a free update is sooooo shameless.

It would be nice if he credits them but I don't think he really needs to.

Looks like someone's taken a look at Terraria's floating islands, and thought "I like the look of those..."

To be fair, Terraria ripped off Minecraft. Consider them even.
Whoa, at least watch the trailer, Terraria is it's own game.

Infact the only elements similar are digging and building, and I think there's a game called "Real Life" that invented them.

Terraria is better, IMHO. Minecraft doesn't have:

Magic
Bosses
2D sprites
Goblins
Hookshot
Health that can be increased by finding crystal hearts underground
NPCs
Vines that can obstruct light in caves
Underground jungle biome
Proper dungeons
Corrupted parts of the world

I'm not going to go on because I'm taking up too much space here. Just research the damn game next time.
I got all excited when I read your post about all the stuff it has. Then I searched it on youtube and saw that it was 2d. And you think that's better?
To each their own I suppose....

I like the idea, and this definitely supports the idea of not building straight down. People seem to already forget that is one of the commandments of Minecraft.
Who wants to bet the portal to the skyworld is made out of diamond blocks? Hmm, 9 diamonds to a block at 10 blocks...that's only 90 diamonds you'd have to collect. Time to diggy a hole!

Those look pretty awful.

I mean, great idea, but if the end result makes the map look like you laid down roughly 7 million blocks of TNT, then it might not be a very well received update.

Of course, he could just make the seed's make floating islands in-game again, instead of making them an entirely different dimension.
Notch himself said it doesn't look good. Consider this a rough draft. This may not be released until closer to the release date with a lot of new stuff added.

Well, I hope it will be as good as this mod [http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/194948-coming-soon-the-aether-collab-king-kodaichi-shockah/] is shaping up to be.
Ah, I was ninja'd.

Yeah, I have a feeling that mod is the reason he's announced it. I'm actually a bit surprised he doesn't mention it. There's no way he doesn't know about it...
Unless he is too busy with debugging the game and adding new features, as well as having a personal married life now to take time to see what mods are coming out.

It seems that Notch literally cannot win here.

Makes the mod official?
OH WOW JUST USING MODS NOW NOTCH? YOU LAZY BASTARD!

Doesn't use the mod, and instead makes his own version?
WHY ARE YOU NOT USING THE MOD THE MOD IS BETTER STOP RIPPING OFF THEIR IDEAS NOTCH!

Decides to just not incorporate sky worlds?
WHY ARE YOU NOT PUTTING THESE IN NOTCH WHY ARE YOU SUCH A LAZY GIT THESE WOULD BE GREAT!

The man could walk across water, and people would complain about how he's taking money away from ferrymen.
Just a quick note for all the minecraft newbies, the floating islands were in minecraft before it switched to infinite maps, he's just adding them back in. If anything, the modders were recreating an old feature that he is now adding back in.
