There's no denying it - games can have incredibly explosive and spectacular set pieces that that have to be seen (and played) to be believed. I was playing God Of War 3 over the weekend and I couldn't help but think that it has the best action I've seen in any game. Just the opening fight with Poseidon is better than all the action scenes I've seen in movies combined. So I ask you, members of The Escapist, which games have you played that offered nothing but a pure adrenaline rush in terms of gameplay and action?

Absolutely none.
There have been parts that have come close to an adrenaline rush, but no game ever made has been like that all the way through or even with every play.

Really wish I could get an adrenaline rush whilst at home on my arse though, I love the feeling.

Games in which I am forced to hide knowing that if I am found, I will certainly be killed (like Thief) get my adrenaline going more than balls to the wall guns blazing games.

Doom.

No complex controls to think about, and massive levels so stuffed with enemies your finger never has to leave the fire button. If I hit the right mood I can go through entire levels in an unthinking reflex driven kill frenzy that no other game can match.

No game can sustain that forever, not even God of War. That said, I would drift towards single-player based FPS games for splashy action pieces.

One such mission that kept me on the edge for the duration was Perfect Dark's seventh mission. In summary, the alien Skedar get PISSED that their plan didn't work and blast their way into the hub area to kill you and all of the support staff. Some of them even can't be saved no matter how fast you are. There's Carrington Institute soldiers fighting with Skedar, explosions everywhere, and a time bomb to compound matters. Oh, and the only time you'd seen a live Skedar before then was the massive one who killed Trent Easton with one swipe- now you're up against multiples.

You remember. You know what you thought and felt, the first time seeing it and hearing it.

Unreal Tournament/Championship and arena FPS's. I was just on UT2004 earlier, and it's still as every bit awesome as the day I bought it. You have the freedom to move how you want, and it's really satisfying to be able to combine dodges with gunfire, especially when it takes skill and precision to get players that are as every bit as knowledgeable with the controls and movement as you are. The same goes for UC2, it was a skillfull game with really intense moments where you'd be dodging off walls, pulling out your sword and firing yourself across the screen. What I love most though is how often that kinda stuff happens on both games. It's frantic and one of few games where you have a bigger chance of surviving if you keep moving.

Also, GTA IV. The driving really gives you an adrenaline rush, especially when it's combined with being chased by police/people and you have to shoot them as well as predict the traffic and any corners.

Some multiplayer battles I've had on Brutal Legend have given me that... Especially sneaking a couple of squads of roadies past the other guy's army, then using them to trash his stage before he knows what's going on :)

Dystopia

It's a sourcemod game, and one map Silo on the first objective attacking as the punks always gets my heart pumping when I'm stealth decking it as I know at any moment someone could come in the door behind me and kill me. Fast capping more so as I start to panic when I get in the room.

God I wish hl2.exe would work again.

This only happens to me in competitive matches. Old CS Cal-M matches when you're the last one alive, Starcraft ladder matches, WoW pvp. Get that speeding pulse and chills.

This isn't so much the whole game, as the end of one, but I'm guessing it counts...

Halo: Combat Evolved. Final level. Playing co-op on Legendary with my brother. I'll be vague for the sake of spoilers, although you should know this already.

After getting through the drive, by bro and I charged towards the end of the level. I was about to be overwhelmed by Flood, and I had no shield left, so I charged ahead and kamikazed with a rocket launcher. Andy (who isn't that good at the game) was hanging back and trying to weaken the Flood, but when I died, he had no option but to charge. I might add that the timer had less than ten seconds left.

He was almost at the end, but he obviously wasn't going to make it, and his shields were at a minimum, and the timer was down to two seconds...

On the last second, I respawned on the trigger to end the level.

It sounds kinda lame in writing, but the adrenaline was amazing.

GoW3 ain't got shit on Bayonetta, which is non-stop infinite climax. Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit is almost always an adrenalin rush, it's my favorite arcade racer since Midnight Club 2, which is also non-stop adrenalin.

Vanquish is full of non-stop action.

Uncharted 2 is just great set-piece after great set-piece.

Mirror's Edge is pure platforming bliss.

I was playing Wipeout HD last night- anything like Zone or time trials at the fastest speed get very intense.

UT2004 Still holds my vote for best Deathmatch game. Secondary vote goes to The Specialists Halflife mod though.

These are the only games that have ever given me such an adrenaline rush. Also they are the only games that have ever scared me. Mad props to Frictional Games. They managed to do what FEAR and Dead Space didn't even get close to achieving and their staff is 5 people who works online. Frictional, I salute you.

Well lets just start from the old school stuff:
- Unreal Tournament (all except the last one, somehow they got the idea people hate fun)
- Painkiller (utterly mental)
- Serious Sam (a little less mental)
- Vanquish (gundams on crack)
