I try to save whenever I can but if there are no auto-saves to remind me, I forget. I don't particularly trust auto-save for some reason, and if I die and haven't saved in the last 10 minutes, I will literally stop playing the game. That's why I can never complete Elder Scrolls or Fallout.

NEVER!!!!!!! Well maybe...
Trust me, its immensely satisfying to pwn some random arbitrary monster that keeps killing you, and what better way to do it than when u are impervious to damage, have infinite mana, and the capability to cast a spell that does 500 damage within 100 feet of whatever u are trying to kill?
I'll end up doing it eventually, but I think I'll trying beating it first.

I save my games like I was getting paid to do it. I keep multiple saves for every game that allows it and I rotate them in turn on the chance that I might need to go back a ways because of mistakes or bad judgement (Harromount or Bhelin? I can't decide... Better save!).

Too many times I've lost gamesaves from corrupted files or crashed systems. So it's just a standard part of the way I play now. Save early, Save Often, Save like your virtual life depended on it! (You should see how many Fallout 3 saves are on my 360's HDD)

OK, just avoid the dark brotherhood missions at first, u need a high sneak skill for a few of them.

To be honest, the games aren't that difficult if you're willing to put in a little extra effort towards making money at the start. Hoard everything you find, and sell it all for the most you can get. Make multiple trips if needed. Also considering fiddling with the difficulty slider. You can game the system if you lower the difficulty to weaken an enemy, then max it out right before killing the enemy for easy increased XP.

On topic, I remembered another game I have bad saving habits for - Civilization III. The game is so addicting for me that hours will go by without my realizing it, and I have often had a glitch or crash or "accidental" missile launch occur, only after which realize the last save was 3 hours before.

My rule of thumb is that I save:

1.Before every difficult encounter
2.After every difficult encounter.
3.After I buy something from the shop.
4.If I feel like I've spent too much time without something bad happening.

Also I had this happen to me once.

Saving...don't turn off the po-*BLACKOUT!*
I seem to do the same thing - in Pokemon, it's always before a gym leader (or [insert evil organization] fight), after said fight in case I get ganked on the way to the Pokecenter, and whenever it seems like I've progressed far enough into a route or mountain without something truly bad happening.

And blackouts are evil - playing Ratchet & Clank: Up Your Arsenal and going through the Quarktastic Battle arena fight... 100 rounds. Fairly difficult the first time through, but mostly very time consuming. On round 99, my father turned on a fan that always gives the house a momentary power stutter but was apparently just long enough (less than a second) to turn off my PS2.

Obscenities were yelled. xD

I save a lot, but most prominently on games that crash a lot or have you die continually. Saving happens often in those situations. Like, a lot.

Save all the damn time. Once or twice (games like Max Payne) I've quicksaved about four times in the middle of one gunfight.

I'm pretty obsessive about it.

i remember in fallout 3 at the height of my saving OCD (and FO3 was my biggest saving OCD) i'd save around 2-3 times a minute. on differnet slots. at the end of all my characters i had like 1000 saves, but then i erased them all and did it again so around 2000 saves over about 5 characters. crazy times.

also, i think there's a mod for oblivion that automaticly saves every few minutes, and also whenever you exit combat mode (when the combat music shuts up), i don't use it but i've been meaning to find it and install it.

It really depends on the game... But usually after something hard...
In RPGs though, lately I have been saving as much as possible... because I feel that when I make a decision in one of those games I have to stick to it for better or worse... like in real life... It makes things more fun than deciding "Nah, I didn't want that to happen, I'll just reload and do things differently"

My cousin had a funny habid of saving multiple files of the exact same progress... well at least I thought it was weird, but it seems like a good few people do it...

In games where sleeping is used to save progress(GTA etc.) I tend to save at night time... I dunno weird habit but I feel it helps with immersion.

With RPG's, i've always saved a lot, almost every time i come across a save point.
Other games, depends, mostly when i've completed a level, a chapter, or haven't saved in a while.

oh geeze, The Total war series is pretty bad in this regard for me. That, and Oblivion.

SO... many saves... so much saving... So very much saving...

I save at every save point i come across and that includes auto-saves. I use as many slots as i can because my 360 has become a zombie. I need to make sure it doesn't eat the brains of my game saves.

THAT would be a Godsend on the PC! Even with a quicksave option, I'm so no to PC gaming that I forget to save all the time... I was looking around the landscape for a while and got killed by... something... and suddenly found myself with two hours I'd never have again >.<

Whenever I remember. It depends on the game too. I save massive amounts in Elder scrolls for some reason.

If a game lets me save whenever, I generally save often (I've saved over a thousand times in Fallout 3). Usually after changing around my character equipment, buying stuff, clearing a room, or whenever the hell I feel like it.

If the game has a quicksave button, I save pretty much every 10 seconds :p Just as long as the quicksaves are quick and take like a split second to do. Not those games that take like 5 mins to quicksave.
