So I was wondering, am I the only person concerned with what is going on in North Korea right now? [http://www.cnn.com/SPECIALS/2008/news/north.korea/]

We have North Korea wanting to launch a rocket with "satellites". Then we have Japan who has told Korea that if they launch the rocket they will shoot it down. Japan has set up their Missile Defense System in anticipation of the rockets launch. North Korea then told Japan that it will attack Japanese military, "major targets," if it shoots down rocket. And just now America has said not to launch the rocket or there will be consequences.

sighs

Well this will be interesting. The rocket is set to launch between April 4 and April 8.
Just was wondering what your opinion is.

We're fucked. But then again, I thought we were fucked when Russia invaded Georgia a while ago.

I regret reading this. I have enough problems with the 2012 doom theory.

Oh well. As long as the US has missile defense systems, enough nukes to ram up Korea's ass if they try anything funny, and most of the world on their side and ready to rape North Korea if they set off the big one.

If it's actually just a satellite, then the Koreans are justified to respond, I do believe.
If not... what's one missile gonna do?

North Korea is asking for it. Seriously we should all the sane countries around the world together and bomb the fuck out of north North Korea.

Of course in Australia we're safe from everything, WE ARE INVINCIBLE. Yeh we'll just watch the fireworks. Can't touch this *exposes rear*.

As far as I know Noth Korea's military consists of two-dozen rice farmers with 60-year-old rifles, pointy sticks, and an old Soviet tank with no reverse gear.

I'm not exactly bricking myself.

Well if a bomb does get fired it will hit Japan. So no worries from me.

I really don't think North Korea will do anything. They're just bluffing.

Can't we out-nuke everyone? I mean, I'm not saying it's the best option, but America is a superpower for a reason. Or, just blow up the Korean satellite. I honestly don't know if that's even possible, but we just sit and take their threats. I just think Korea is dumb if they think they can do anything while they're outnumbered and... err... out-nuked (?)

Theres about 20 million people in the greater Los Angeles area, 100 million in Japan, 3 million in the area of Vancouver, 50 million in South Korea, and then of course there's China, but I'm not sure of their relations with North Korea.

One nuke in the right spot and a LOT of people die.

Man we had this discussion when the news was first announced, so I'll summarize my position that I had on that thread:

North Korea isn't going to do anything stupid like start WWIII. With China as their neighbor, China actually likes things staying tense but peaceful. Their trade and dominance of world markets depends on it. Doing something to start a war would disrupt trade and possibly give other nations a reason to invade Korea - gaining a land base there. So China will sit there, waiting, and if something seems off, they will probably shoot down the missile themselves.

China is no longer the ally of North Korea that it used to be. If North Korea keeps being a dangerous pain, and keeps trying to start shit, most likely China will invade North Korea and put an end to their stupidity. Way before nuclear war starts. Before markets and stability in the region are seriously threatened.

Also, to waylay the paranoid conspiracy theory that popped up in the other thread -

No, the US is not controlling North Korea as a shadow puppet government. The US has little or no stake in North Korea's future, except for it to stop being such a pain in the ass.

So, don't worry about it. North Korea has launched hundreds of rockets in the past, and we're still here. US will send some destroyers out to watch, the British will keep an eye via satellite, China will mobilize (and they have mobilized) to the NDK border, Japan will scramble some fighters, India will sit and sweat, and the rest of the world will just watch all those people contain the situation.

Xactly.

Don't forget the radiation cloud. If a nuke was launched on a windy day, that radiation cloud will spread.

Say a nuke is dropped in LA. The wind is blowing to the East. That cloud spreads across U.S. and kills ALOT more people.

Hehe. This is all so much fun. It's just a repeat of the cold war. Superstition and paranoia. I'm pretty damn sure they're just firing up some satellite, probably for TV or phones. Japan and America have gone crazy declairing that this is some nuclear test of long range misslies and are going to shoot it down. NK has just scratched its head over heir stupidity.

Unless I've missed something, this is what it sounds to me in easy-to-read baby talk.

You know what Korea could do? (If they were smart). Disamble the missile and if they find a satelilite in there, we can just all laugh at our stupidity. Though, if everybody else was smart, they would send the satellite to some country whose stupid enough to examine it so see its not a warhead in disguise.

Honestly? I'm more worried about... you know... radical Islam? You know, that religion that keeps publicly stating about how it wants to destroy every single other religion out there? Including those who don't follow religion? North Korea is a really small threat. They launch a single missile and we can just carpet bomb them to hell and back. Radical Islam? Well... tell me exactly how you plan on taking care of roughly a hundred million people in all portions of the globe.

That's basically it, except for NK saying they will invade and destroy Japan. I realize, most likely, nothing will happen, but it is still something to be somewhat worried about.
