Have some of you forgotten that N. Korea has tested nuclear missiles that fell in the sea of japan or fell to launch. Plus America no longer needs to drop nuclear bombs any more since the U.S. Military came up with the M.O.A.B.. M.O.A.B. short for mother of all bombs has the destructive power of an Atom bomb without none of that cool radiation. Kim Jong-il is insane he truly believes himself to be a god. When he stopped smoking everyone in N. Korea stop smoking. He has convince his people if they go to the red cross they will be cannibalized.
I just want to throw out something here that's a rather common explanation (in military intelligence circles) of the pursuit of and research into nuclear arms. Most small nations which do not possess a sizeable enough military or enough powerful allies pursue nuclear arms when the area which they are in sits near a potential threat that could overpower them with conventional arms. Typically, this threat is a deeply hated one, usually for religious or historical reasons. Thus, the militant but small country pursues nuclear arms for defensive purposes.
Take a minute to ponder what that means.
Yes, the bomb is intended to be detonated on the soil of the nation developing it. It acts as an invasion deterrent. This is widely believed to be a possible reason for Iran pursuing nuclear arms by many military analysts and political theorists, especially since their pursuit of nuclear launching technology is considerably minor by comparison. Or, you could really believe they simply want nuclear power plants, which isn't totally beyond belief.
So, North Korea could be developing nuclear weapon technology to defend themselves from perceived threats. Kim Jong-Il is a paranoid son of a *****, it wouldn't surprise me that he thinks invasion of North Korea is high on his enemies to-do list (enemies being: the entire world). Of course, Jong-Il has them pursuing missile technology (rather poorly) because (as someone already mentioned) he does enjoy being in the spotlight. He likes to look like a threat, hence the constant poking of the proverbial bears.
That isn't to say he is not a threat. Military threat assessment for nuclear armed nations assumes that rational thinkers will always realize that nuclear war is lose-lose. If there is one man out there who is irrational and might have a weapon capable nuke it is Jong-Il, so that is the strongest argument for being afraid. Still, he has to have operable delivery systems in place to be able to act offensively, and he really has to go bat-shit crazy to think it is a good idea to go out with a bang.
However, radical Islamic terrorist organizations (who yes, are a minority of the Islamic faith) are a much bigger threat given their devotion to their cause and their level of organization. I would guess that North Korea will either renege on their declaration of intent or will be summarily cowed for going against the wishes of her more powerful neighbors. Either way, you should be concerned, but not betting on nuclear winter.

I think I know why Japan doesn't appriciate Korea launching a 'satalite'.
Its quite obvious to me.
1) Japan has a shit ton of satalites up there already.
2) Korea has... none?
3) Space around earth, with the satalites the way they are, are quite simply, a 'clusterfuck'. Theres a reason space shuttles have 'launch windows', its not like we have to wait for the 'ozone' hole to align, its so they don't smack into satalites! Korea? They are just going to launch one into that clusterfuck... Yea, I can see exactly why Japan is saying they would shoot there 'rocket/satalite' down.

I seem to remember a number of years ago they did a missile test flight that flight that went over South Korea and everyone said "Oh no the world is over". Then Bush said "If you do that again there will be serious consequences". Then NK, being so terrified of Bush (who by then was known for starting wars) fired another test missile over the same flight pattern. Nothing happened. The world didn't end. Everyone lives happily ever after.
NK will launch the satellite, cause they don't care what anyone says. If it gets shot down the worst that will happen is a minor skirmish. Nobody will use nuclear weapons because they are scared at them (except NK). A skirmish happens and countries around the world will be begging for peace before the first shots are fired.

Who cares about Nuclear weapons anyways? Dresden showed us that a ton of bombs can be just as, if not more devistating!

If there is going to be a third World War the most likely cause would be the efforts of an aggressive and overpopulated nation to assimilate (see: conquer) surrounding nations in the attempt to acquire more living space. In World War II the Nazi's referred to this as Lebensraum, which literally means "living space" or "habitat." This was the excuse for annexing the Sudetenland and invading Poland. Sure, there are a lot of Islamic fundamentalists, but there are a lot of normal, down to earth Islamic people as well. A lot more. Go out to a diverse, multi-cultural city sometime and you'll see that not every single Arabic looking person is out to cleanse the world of infidels.
