popularity plays a part in the elections?! thank you captain obvious. how do you think US grant got elected? how do you think george washington was picked to lead? mccain was popular too. he was a maverick.
Or more to the point, how does democracy work? ha ha, if the majority didn't like you you wouldn't be there at all.
exactly!
besides, mccains running mate had zero experience and obamas running mate had a lot and that should even out in logic with the opening post to this thread. the only thing that should matter is his judgement. he already closed guatano bay. i wonder how many people there are innocent and didnt receive fair trials
Or how many extremists he will let go. heck, they just caught one that was a prisoner there. He went right back to blowing shit up after he was released.

He has already done more than Bush ever did. Already closed your torture chamber, already made important calls to important people, and already set up a plan for your old president's idiotic war.

Yeah, Obama is a celebrity, but at least America voted for someone who won't run them into the ground.
He may be a celebrity, but he's a celebrity with a degree in constitutional law.[sup]*[/sup] I think the US could do with more celebrity contitutional law graduates.

[sup]*[/sup]Yeah, the US Constitution. Remember that? I mean, before Cheney shredded it to line his nest?

I wanna start off by saying that in this previous election I wasn't stoked on either candidate
But Obama was elected as a celebrity not a president...
People were excited for a African American president who looked good and was a great public speaker and that's why (I believe) most people voted for him
I don't think most people realize how very little experience he has
I don't pretend to know everything about politics but I do know that he is becoming a celebrity
He has his own action figure and I believe his daughters are going to appear on Hannah Montana
It seems like he's two steps away from getting a reality show in the white house
I just think that we need a president in the white house not a celebrity
Am I the only one who feels like this?
You realize that this is a problem with society and not the president right? If he get's his own reality show, might that be a good thing? Allowing us to see what his daily dealings are like.
He became a celebrity, he wasn't one before. And some of the best presidents had a similar status.

I'm going to pretend that you were joking about a reality show in our white house
because you couldn't possibly think that reducing the job of Obama leading our country to lets say Paris Hilton in Simple life

That isn't quite what I had in mind... Let's just forget about it.

I think you mean buffoon.
Thats the word I was looking for.

Obama's celebrity status does give him a bit of credibility. The turn outs he has had in Europe and coverage outside of the US means that people are willing to listen to the US again. Which is something this country desperately needs. Hopefully his administration can use the celebrity status to do some good and mend the wounds abroad caused by G W.

My government class talked about this today and this is what we came up with.

Elected in good faith, and high expectations.

So okay judging what some of you have written
Where is the change he promised? I want the change to happen right now.

Remember that a president cannot just wave a magic wand and make all the problems go away.
I'm not sure what point you were trying to make.

His blackness and so-called celebrity status meant nothing to me. I voted for him because he is very intelligent, charismatic, very articulate, a creative thinker, an over achiever, and a decent human being. Those are the qualities I want in a President. I want a person who is better than most of us in almost every way. That is why he got my vote and I know I am not the only one who thinks this way.
Good on ya.

We can talk all we want about people liking Obama's platform. What this really means is people liked the oversimplification of Obama's platform.

"Not Bush!"
"More abortion!"
"Less taxes!"
"No more recession!"
"Icky wars go bye-bye!"
"Free doctors and hospitals!"
"Plus he's black and you're a little bit racist if you don't like him!"

It's a cold, sad fact that many many people don't pay attention to actual policy ideas and go with the happy-clappy version of things. Sure he might have said he'll bring all of them, but he conveniently leaves out HOW. (I know he has said how on his website, but people don't look at those "wordy" parts of the site, and some of them have been criticized as being bad for the country and not able to work.)

I also know every campaign is like this, but Obama's has been worse, in that it really attracts the people who don't bother to research even a little.
