The cake was a lie, because although it existed, it was never given to you by GladOs and was, in fact, almost substituted for a fiery death, which was what was intended by the phrase written on the walls by the past lab rats which stated that "the cake was a lie" suggesting not that GladOs was lying about the cake's existence but that GladOs was lying about her intentions. And if you beat the game, you would know that!
