Get the GOTY Deluxe edition for $6.24. It includes all the DLC and is the only way to get it. This was also on sale a few weeks ago, I bought it even though I own it on 360, PS3 and on PC DVD. The Steam version just allows me to play without putting the DVD in.
GOTY is only $5, Deluxe is $6.24. The only extra content I recognize is the horse armor, haven't heard anything about the rest.
Buy The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion® Game of the Year Edition Deluxe
The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Game of the Year Edition Deluxe includes Knights of the Nine and the Shivering Isles expansions plus Fighter's Stronghold Expansion, Spell Tome Treasures, Vile Lair, Mehrune's Razor and much more. This edition is playable only in English language.

An extra $1.25 for the DLC that isn't included in the GOTY version. You can't buy that DLC separately anymore.
But is that stuff worth getting? (Yes, I'm that stingy.)
I think so, Battlehorn Castle (Fighters Stronghold) and Wizards Tower alone are worth $1.25.
Took your advice and went with the Deluxe edition :)

Get both, seriously. Oblivion is only 5 dollars, hell, get the expansions too. At least Shivering Isles.
I did, it's either GOTY or Deluxe, so I just paid an extra dollar for the latter.

I've bought it and I've had no interest in Oblivion before, but £5 is hardly a major price issue, just means 2 less drinks at the pub one evening!!

Currently downloading a load of mods for the game.

That article seems helpful, I'm going to try some graphics mods, the Francesco mod (cos I'm new to TES games) and the bug fixer one obviously. Maybe a nude mod haha.
Appreciate the link, have a feeling I'm going to spend a lot of time modding it. It's going to be an interesting experience, considering the only other game I've modded extensively is Minecraft (speaking of which, haven't played that in quite a while...).

Have fun with it. Battlehorn Castle is a nice "house" with plenty of storage and room to upgrade, check out the basement too. Wizards Tower is the place to go if you want to build up your alchemy skill. Alchemy can be a huge money maker.

Oh yeah, Battlehorn Castle gives you a follower to help you fight if you want. If he dies, he respawns at the castle I think.

I haven't really modded extensively so I'm looking forward to this experience - the most I've modded before is a couple for Baldur's Gate and The Witcher 2, so this will be a new experience.

Well personally, I'd say no, but that's just because I have severe issues with the ownership policies on Steam (you're buying a license to a game instead of the game itself)
Isn't that what you do with every game? You don't actually own the source code and everything, just a license to use it?

Oblivion has a mod for basically everything, I hated the shit out of it, everything. Skyrims better but lacks a fantasy look too it. OPINION, OPINION!

Not really. If I buy a game in the store and possess the physical disc, that game is mine to do with whatever I please, and nobody can take it from me. I can play it, trade it in, or even use the disc as a coaster if I want to. If I piss off the company that made it in any way, they're SOL outside of online multiplayer.

On the other hand, if I buy a game on Steam, then do something to piss off Valve and get my account terminated, that game, that I paid for, is gone and I can never use it again. That is NOT okay with me. In fact, if I ever buy a game that turns out to use Steam as DRM, I strip the game of that trait.
... You mean Origin, right? Steam is definetly one of the best people to go to, your so very un-likely to have your account terminated, for anything, really. I think the only thing that you can get your account terminated for is a very, VERY many warnings.

I have been a dick on steam forever now and my account is still around. You can only get it terminated if you ask them to do it, or your found out as a hacker who stole someones account. Its getting to the point to where discs are basically obsolete, for the same reason you said so, the fact that I use my old games as pretty coasters says something about that.

Using the DRM thing doesn't work well anymore, if you want to play something like Skyrim and don't have a powerful enough machine, what do you need? A console, that is DRM there, you need to own something previously to access what you bought. Steam's DRM isn't so bad when you can't buy a game used and get all the content. Through services like Steam the dev gets all your money to fund next projects.

Consoles are the oldest DRM there is, so don't try to pin DRM onto one thing when its on everything.

Gah, I'm jealous. Considering how I'm not much of a wRPG person, I regret not waiting until a deal like this. I paid $20 for Oblivion and I would have rather paid five.

I don't have much of an answer other than $5 isn't much money. And from the sound of it, Skyrim isn't much of an improvement over Oblivion.
Not to turn it into one of those debates, but I find that argument (when I see it) to be shallow and unfounded. I think they changed the game engine as much as they could without actually altering their genre (and then people would be bitching about that, just like with Halo: Wars...)

I pay so little for games on Steam that I don't feel the need to be able to resell them.

Absolutely get Oblivion if you don't have it and are looking forwards to Skyrim. Yes, the interface is kinda crap, but there are some mods to fix that. Just gonna throw out a few mods that are absolutely worth getting here.

Unoficial Oblivion Patch--fixes more minor glitches and issues than probably all the official patches combined.

DarNified UI--requires Oblivion Mod Manager, but that's a program you should get used to if you download this. This fixes a lot of complaints about interface and HUD and whatnot and just makes things overall better looking and more streamlined, I say.

There are some mods that I think go under the name "natural landscapes" or "natural X" or something that are worth downloading by and large if the visuals in the game are giving you grief.

There are a few other things for new hair models/skin textures/etc but I don't know the names offhand. The UOP and DarNified are must-haves, though. On top of these I'd recommend the quest mods Malevolent and Lost Spires, which are both loads of fun.

Oh and I've seen a few people mentioning Nehrim. GET NEHRIM. FUCKING GET NEHRIM. It's free, it's an entire new game built on the Oblivion engine (with a few modifications, most notably to the leveling system). It has a few issues with stability for some people, but it won't be an issue if you have no mods for Oblivion (i.e. an empty "Data" folder). You could very easily play Nehrim and completely forget Oblivion exists and be more than happy with it. Nehrim is, also, totally free. So that's the best part. The only requirement is "have Oblivion". So absolutely get Nehrim. BUT if you start having stability/crashing issues (like the first time I played it, it basically crashed every five or ten minutes on me), play it a bit more and if the issues don't go away, just start loading up on mods for Oblivion and have crazy fun there. But if you can play it, be awesome and play the fuck out of it. IN case you can't tell, I really like Nehrim (once I got it to run smoothly).

I personally couldn't fuckigng stand Oblivion, and I don't think it's worth $5.
Plus it will look absolutely fuck ugly in comparison to Skyrim.

I wouldn't get it. But, this is me, the majority feel differently and you might to.

It depends on your reasoning for getting it. Are you getting it because you want to experience the games in order, storywise? Or do you just want to play an elder scrolls game to get pumped up for skyrim?

The stories are hundreds of years apart, so there's almost no continuity, aside from a few passing comments from npc's and books you can find.

Don't buy Oblivion for story progression. That would be my advice.

The only reason anyone should buy and play oblivion at this point is so that when they play skyrim they get to feel how much better it is.

If you really want/need assistance, the CM Companion Mod is great, and the companions can be set as Essential, which means they can be knocked out, but never killed. I bought Oblivion during the deal it had when Skyrim came out, and that's a mod I absolutely recommend. Even if you don't particularly need the help, the companions have UNLIMITED storage capacity, so you can literally pick up everything you find without restraint. Makes earning money a cinch for early levels.

You could also TGM when you get encumbered.
