This article will answer your question better than all those smart-ass 'play Morrowind instead' answers.

I especially recommend doing Nocturnal's quest as soon as you hit level 10, as it rewards you with arguably the most useful item in the game.

The Dark Brotherhood quests are some of the best in the game, although as a 100% Stealth Geek I'm obviously biased. Still, I really did enjoy them--fairly subtle, some halfway-decent voice acting and dialogue based around them (for bloody once in that otherwise putridly abysmal voice-acting disaster), and some pretty nifty rewards obtained by fulfilling certain criteria, most of which boiled down to "ignore every RPG trope you've been taught and DON'T kill these random enemies for their pocket change. Y'know, be all sneaky and assassin-y and such instead."

Also, wanna know how you can really get the most out of Oblivion? Go get yourself some mods. With a handful of environment, immersion, and especially stealth-rebalancing mods, I easily pulled another 60 hours out of what began life as a 40-ish hour playthrough. Just wandering around through the suddenly much more diverse Cyrodiil, enjoying the glow of the sunrise on the mountain snow, getting lost in the dense fog south of Leyawiin, then retiring to my cottage outside of Bravil and watching the stars out of my (transparent!) window...

Dammit. *Fires up the game*

Best quest to focus on is going to the store and buying Morrowind Collector's Edition. It's pretty self-explanatory from there.
Listen to this guy. (Don't get it on Steam - the Steam version is messed up - but there are obviously loads of other placed to get it from.)

I picked it up on a whim off the cheap rack at EB for ten bucks, 'cause I wanted something to play over the weekend. Instead, it changed my freakin' life.
You can't buy Morrowind from a physical shop in Australia anymore, it's long out of print. Jesus guys, if he wants to play Oblivion just let him do it.
thanks.

i have morrowind from steam. i figured i would play oblivion since i have played it before. ill play morrowind later since i havent touched it. finish what i have started and all that.
You're missing out until then, though. Oblivion's going to feel really dull after a while and transferring to Morrowind is going to be strange. Just don't complain that your character can't hit a four-inch Kwama Forager after sprinting across half the island.
That's strictly opinion. If he wants to play Oblivion, stop hassling him.

OT: Dark Brotherhood and Thieves' Guild questlines are the best, and you could also challenge the arena.

so what am i doing wrong? and if you say anything about morrowind i will be annoyed.

Every single little enemy is like a boss fight. i doing the allies for bruma quest atm, inside a oblivion gate, being owned by those dinosaur looking things. just one of them. im like i think level 13 is and wearing the best armour i have found which is the blades armour.

But it seems after every little fight i nearly die or do die and have to heal my self for 30 secs.

Any tip or idea on what i could do different. it seems like my magic sucks. like im using that flare spell from the start. any ideas where to get a more powerful spell. but also my sword swings seem to do like so little damage.

or is this what oblivion is like. not that many enemies to kill but they are all tough?

And this guy. Literally the only bonus Oblivion has on Morrowind is it's melee combat system is better and, if I recall correctly, if you own both games you can even drop morrowind's assets into Oblivion's engine.

But don't quote me on that.

edit

However, to be a little more on topic, the previously mentioned Thieves guild and Dark Brotherhood quest lines are pretty great. I'd go so far as to say that the Dark Brotherhood line is easily the best thing in the game and could nearly stand on it's own as it's own game were it longer.

Haha, absolutely love how the first 3 posts are about Morrowind.

Just run through Oblivions Dark Brotherhood and Thieves guild missions. They're the most fun and inventive IMO.

Also, do give Morrowind more than 5 damn minutes, you won't regret it.
Pretty much what I was going to say. Oblivion is fun, certainly but in a lot of aspects it doesn't really live up to Morrowind. I'd probably either get Morrowind: GotY Edition or go for the Dark Brotherhood part in Oblivion, or both.

Don't be discouraged by Morrowind being less player-friendly, one of Oblivion's greatest failings was that it was TOO easy IMO.

Personally I found the Thieves Guild to be the best storyline, Dark Brotherhood would be second. Don't play the main quest though, you will lose brain cells.

If you have Shivering Isles feel free to play it's main quest though.

I loved both Morrowind and Oblivion even though i started playing them pretty late. I bought each after like 2 years after release when they had all expansions/patched up and all. In the end loved them both. I'm saying this because I'm old enough to have played both Arena and Daggerfall and as much as people praise them in perspective they we're the buggiest thnigs ever. Pretty much unplayable most of the times.

Anyway I really don't see why people bash at the amount of bugs Oblivion has and forget what a buggied hell hole Morrowind was. There's a reason why both have the most downloaded mod called Unofficial patch. Sure Oblivion got more simplified and more friendly but I never liked the creatures in Morrowind they seemed random generated spore creatures. And no Oblivion didn't took so called modern creatures and put them in.I remember getting swarmed in Arena and dagerfall by goblins and minotaurs that I was sick of them. So if it's one thing it's Morrowind the game that tried something different.

As for Oblivion I really liked it and sinked more hours that I would admit but thing is something happened like 2 years ago when this game called Mount and Blade came out. I was playing it and it was freaking crazy at how much fun i was having and all I wished was the next TESV would get that epicness of the fights I was having in Mount and blade and stitch his story above. Now I realize they aren't doing that and the best they came with is to implement what modders did for Oblivion. I'm sure it's not gonna be a bad game at all but seeing that making something that feels so big is possible leaves me with a sour taste. Just like Fable and Witcher.Fable with all his money always promised this and that and never delivered and then something like Witcher comes out and does everything Fable promised and more.

heh, I just knew someone would because I said that.

Anyway, I remember seeing a news post on here some time ago about a mod for the game that dropped morrowind into Oblivion's engine. Since I've played both and I'm not really the type to replay games I didn't bother to look into it that much.

lemme see...

Yea, here ya go.

It might just be the graphics that got overhauled I couldn't say. I still maintain morrowind is better in every regard but the melee combat in Oblivion though.

It's snarky, but I agree with this guy. If you're interested more in the quests and the story, Morrowind is a much better TES game (Oblivion is better for other things).

I never had the chance to play through it, but I've heard Shivering Isles is far and away the best part of Oblivion.

might have to look into that mod when/if i get around to morrowind. from the little i had played it felt like it was shades of brown on blurry textures

I prefer to specialize a character and only do quest lines that make sense for the build.
I started a new game this week and put MOST of my stats into Speed, Agility, and Personality, and picked Marksman, Athletics, Light Armor, Sneak, Mercantile, Alchemy, and Armorer. I'm only planning on doing the Dark Brotherhood and Thieves Guild quest lines (which happen to be the second best and absolute best quest lines, respectively), some Daedric quests (Nocturnal is a definite), and then the main quest.

I do this because I prefer variability across different playthroughs. I don't like it when my character is a jack-of-all-trades (which is what inevitably happens when you try do do everything the game has to offer in one go).

That said, I think the best two quests are "The Ultimate Heist" and "Whodunnit?".

If you do have the Shivering Isles expansion, then definitely go there. I prefer The Shivering Isles to the main game, actually.
