Obsolete Items

So I went shopping today and picked up a few bargains along the way. When I got back a strange thing occurred to me. The movies i'd bought were all HD DVD's, the game I picked up from a bargain bin was an old Dreamcast title and when I'd gotten back I used the last of my cash to buy some comics for the PSP comic reader. When I get down to it, almost everything I buy these days are for formats considered dead or otherwise obsolete.

I suppose it all makes economic sense, I can pick up HD's for peanuts when a Blu Ray of the same movie would put me back a fortune, same with Dreamcast classics. Even reading comics on the PSP is a cheap way of enjoying a lot of quirky titles without having to dig. But I think I mostly buy them just because I have a soft spot for them. Throw in the fact that I have a shelf full of UMD movies and Saturn games (yes i'm a bit of a hoarder) and I think I do genuinely love tech items that never quite made it.

Does anyone else have a serious fondness for this kind of stuff? And why?

I own possibly every Game Gear game that exists. I have an old Windows 2K setup that I use to play old games because I am a very nostalgic person and would rather play my games intended for 4:# on a 4:3 screen that takes up a good chunk of my office.

Agreed! You can't beat the sound of an original recording on vinyl. Me and the hubby must own 1000+ records.

Just bought a brand new album on my record player a week ago. I didn't understand what they meant by vinyl has a 'warmth' to it until I listened to an album I had listened to a million times on my ipod and you can totally tell the difference.

Eh, I still have my N64 and still play it. Oh, and classic DS instead of 3DS, but seriously, I haven't seen a single game exclusive to the 3DS that I want that I don't already own. Maybe, maybe I'll buy one if they're cheap enough whenever that new Paper Mario comes out, but even then.

Got an old VHS recorder.....somewhere. No actual tapes for it though.
Also got an old walkman in the cupboard too. No tapes for that either

The only things I still use that are old is the PS2, which I just picked up FFXII for, and my NES and Mega Drive which I dig out on occassion, but not that often.

I'm still buying psp and ps2 games when ever i have the chance. I also still burn dvd's to store my backup info because it cheaper than flashdrives and hard drives. Also i'm forever playing ps1 and gba games as well as nes games

Books. I have a whole bookshelf full of them, which could quite easily fit inside an SD card instead. It's massively impractical in terms of storage but I sort of feel that ebooks aren't quite there yet as a decent replacement. Running out of battery isn't a legitimate concern with a paperback.

I was like that too till I realized you can read in the dark though. It was like rediscovering reading again for me, my job has alot of down time in a dark area.

I definitely hadn't considered that advantage. I'm reluctantly moving over to ebooks anyway over a process of many years, but it's going to take a lot of time to sell all my physical copies. They're also a lot cheaper than physical copies I think?

I'm in the same boat. It's not so much the games for me, rather the cost in keeping up with the specs required - which as a PC gamer is rather problematic (I hasten to ad I'm not one of the PC "we are die ubermensch" Fanboys - I just grew up with the Amiga and PC gaming and thus keyboard and mouse is ingrained in my muscle memory in a manner that controllers aren't...but I digress).

I also use a mechanical typewriter (made in 1939) for some things; I have poor handwriting, and printers are evil at the best of time, and printing onto labels and envelopes especially is not worth the hassle ("STOP EATING IT! YOU ARE A PRINTER! YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO F**KING PRINT, NOT ABSORB EVERYTHING YOU COME INTO CONTACT WITH IN AN ATTEMPT TO GAIN ITS LIFE-FORCE!!! DON'T MAKE ME SACRIFICE A GOAT TO THE EGYPTIAN SUN GOD AGAIN, YOU KNOW HOW MUCH THAT ANNOYED THE RSPCA" is, I think, a typical conversation when labels are involved)

I also re-enact as a hobby...so, plenty of obsolete stuff used there, but I'm not sure that counts

See personally I wouldn't call vinyls obsolete because they still serve a purpose. They're more of a 'niche' product than anything IMO.

OT: I have a bunch of retro consoles including a Gamecube and a Saturn if that counts?

I love old stuff.

I've got a case full of records and I just finished chopping up my cupboard to fit the deck in there. My Mega Drive is still hooked up to my TV, as is my PS1 & 2, and I've got a windows XP machine that I use to play 64-bit incompatible games on.

As far as books & films/tv series goes I'm still on DVDs and paper. I can't justify paying what is often more than twice the price for Blu-ray discs.
