I've actually studied natural medicine and I have to to debunk this. First off, many of the prescription and otc medicines you get today are based off of homeopathic medicine. They have just found the particular alkaloid or chemical that affects the issue and either extract or synthesize it. Secondly; Many of the questions and ailments we have today were endured and "cured" well before we were even speculated about (that isn't to say you should go about drilling holes in your head or affixing leaches to your body any time soon), we have just narrowed the list of working cures down.

OT: The best way to cure a headache depends on the type of headache it is. The most common type of headache in the world today is caused by low blood sugar. If you get a headache try half a sandwich or a sugary drink (I tend to prefer juice, but soda works too. Just brush your teeth after). If that doesn't work and you don't have any medicine about you can try acupressure, though that is unlikely to work unless you hit the spot just right. If you have a stress headache or a tension headache a nice massage of your head and neck work wonders.

For those of you interested in the acupressure points for headaches;

Step one massage the head paying particular attention to the temples
Step two apply pressure to the fleshy portion between the thumb and index finger on your left hand, staying at least 2cm away from where the bones meet (careful with this if you are pregnant as it can cause uterine contractions)
Repeat until gone (though it won't work if it is a sugar headache)

I suffer from a chronic/transformed migraine (yay!), so I feel like Ive tried everything to treat it.

One odd thing I do to alleviate my headache is put a hair clip on my brow. It sounds really weird, but I get most my headaches behind my eye. Attaching a hair clip to my brow really helps! I leave it on for a few minutes, then take it off, and repeat. Not sure what the magic is behind doing that, but I love it.

Get some real weird looks at work though...

My neurologist has consistently offered botox as a treatment, which is another thing I find strange for treating headaches.
That was so interesting I was compelled to investigate further. The botox injections help relax the muscles in your head for migraines and tension headaches. I'm guessing the hair clip might be doing the same job, stretching out muscles that are tensing up. The botox also blocks some nerve receptors, and perhaps the hair clip does something similar, creating a different pain response in the skin.

Does the placement of the hair clip factor much in the reduction of pain?

Anyway, my usual headache cure is to turn of the lights and lie down for a few minutes with my eyes closed.

Homeopathy works :p

Seriously don't try homeopathy but cocaine, ice and vodka take an anvil/panadol and wait it out. Distract your mind and play a game.
Hey! Don't knock homeopathy! It's the best way to make use of the placebo effect! :D

In Ancient Rome, a common cure for headaches was to either snort or insert into the ear powdered dried cabbage.

Results may vary from those advertised.

Run cold water over your head for as long as you can stand it. Most headaches are caused by a dilation of the blood vessels in the head and the cold will cause them to contract.

I tend to suffer from migraines, I feel like I've tried everything!

What helps me most with a headache is playing either League of Legends, World of Warcraft or Solitaire. When I tell people that playing League of Legends helps with my headaches, they tend to call me crazy. They are most likely correct.

Another thing that helps is reading. It's always so soothing. Or just laying in darkness for a while, or napping, or sleeping. Hearing my boyfriends voice helps a lot too. Or a nice cold drink of juice!

Normal headaches? Exercise works best. Or if you want to be weird place the palm of your hand against your chin and firmly apply pressure to your lower jaw while at the same time try to move your jaw forward. Murders headaches that.

Along a similar line for earache peel a segment of a garlic clove and stick it in your ear. Unbelievably effective.

Or just take a placebo. Placebo effect is found to work even when the subject knows they are taking only a placebo. Although I think you still need someone else to give it to you for that to work.

Two days ago I had a headache but unfortunately I didn't have any pain killers. Then I remembered something my cousin did when I got a headache in his house. He took a cloth, soaked it in cold water and put it on my forehead, some short time later the pain was all gone and I could go back to play with him on his PS2. So that's what I did, and sure enough the headache once again stopped.

I'm probably going to use this method more now instead of taking pain killers since the cloth seems to work faster.

Depends on the type of headache. I get dehydrated super easily, and that causes some pretty bad headaches, they throb and feels like hammers hitting the inside of my skull. When those get really really bad I go and get drunk.
Normal ones I usually ignore, just try to keep busy. Or go to bed.

I used to think of stairs.
Yup. Those things you walked up.
Do NOT know why it worked, but it did. It was like magic.

Probably cured it as I was using a different part of the brain or something, but I like to think it was the stair fariy.

Friend of mine from Nigeria lights a match and presses it against his temples. Apparently it's a traditional remedy there that's supposed to burn out the headache or something. Don't know if it works, because I haven't had a headache myself since he showed it to me, but maybe it'll help you.

Masturbation or Sex. The actual act of Orgasm gets the blood flowing around and releases plenty of endorphins and what nots and tends to make your headaches go away after a few minutes. This isn't a "home remedy" either, it's been proven in quite a few sources.
Wait, really? My headaches always get way worse if I masturbate while I have one.

when I was a kid, my neighbour used to do this "ritual" when she would burn a few matches and extinguish them in a glass of water. they you're supposed to take like three sips of that water. I guess it's something about the trace amounts of carbon and sulfur that would do the trick but I'm not really sure. It was suposed to be some sort of magic or whatever.

the weird thing is, it actually worked most of the time.

This thread is relevant to my interests. I require this information, due to my 2-year long headache not being less painful with any normal techniques.
I think that's called a brain tumor.

OT: Just get some exercise. Long walk, bike ride, just don't be stationary.

In the medieval times, some doctors practiced drilling holes in their patient's foreheads to cure a headache. This was thought to let the demons out...

Or so I've heard.

It's known as Trepanning and was practised as early as Neolithic times.

Ahh, that would make sense! Getting botox injected into my head weirds me out, so I always say no. Currently, I just take some migraine meds (Relpax) and they usually always do the trick (unless its one of my major migraines).

Placement of the hair clip factors a TON in the reduction of pain. The sweet spot is right where my eyebrow begins. I make sure the clip fastens on the bottom? (lack of better terminology) of the brow bone there, so nearly ontop of my eyelid. Ive actually bruised myself before, because I will occasionally squeeze on the hair clip to make it tighter. It sounds insane I know, but once you release after squeezing, it feels amazing.

My headaches are usually clustered in one spot (behind my eye), so it feels like someone is driving a spike through my head. I think that fact makes the hair clip technique super easy for me to use. If I get a headache that is 'spread out,' obviously I can't use the method.

When I feel one coming on I do this odd thing... I picture the pain as a blob in my brain, an unwelcome mass, then I imagine myself walking through an Aperture Science Material Emancipation Grill. Works like a charm.

I always forgo the traditional methods, i.e medicine, quiet time etc, and instead I grab the nearest cat, by the tail naturally, and rubbing it vigorously upon my forehead.
And would you believe it, it works like a charm.
On the off-chance the headache persists, I go the homeopathic route, meaning I dip the cat in a bathtub of water ten to twenty times, then drink it all in one sitting.

From what I read on it, there will be a few minutes of "worse" pain (where it didn't get any better, but because your just had an orgasm, it feels worse do to relativity) but after that it goes away rather quickly. I don't really get any headaches when I can masturbate to test it out for myself, but the sources do seem pretty reliable.
