I liked the art style and I love that they are divulging more on the ratman.

I'm interested in this character reveal thing. I hope it's NOT Ratman, because if it is, there goes all the mystery and suspense about who the character is. Sadly, that's the only person I can think of who it would be.

I'm glad Chell won't be the "main character". I read the title and my first thought was, "Oh no, they're going to kill Chell by making her talk." Think about it. How come in the game she never says a word, yet in the comic she's talking? It would break the character.

I'd prefer to just use my imagination to fill in the blanks, but I guess for those who like this sort of thing this is...a good idea?

This looks really cool. I like the use of different art styles in the story.

But just remember, the weighted companion cube can not talk. If it does, please disregard anything it says to you.

My biggest fear about Portal 2 is that the goddamn stupid obnoxious cake jokes will start up again and we will all have to endure another two years of every idiot in the game industry saying "Omg teh cake is teh LIEZ LOLFLCOPTRR."
Please never mention the cake again.

The writer of Portal agrees with you. He was sick of cake jokes within a few weeks. He has said there will be zero reference to that dead horse in Portal 2.

Be interesting to see the game from a more grounded perspective. Because in-game we see it from the perspective of an insane computer. Now a slightly unhinged man.

Very glad to hear it.

Hmmm...as far as portal 2 goes, I would love to play it. I dont think it's worth the sixty dollar price tag, tho. GRgh, I may just watch a playthrough on youtube and save some money.
$60?
WOW you yanks are unlucky, £32 here in the UK :p

And those pictures, however good they are are going to give me nighmarers for months.
Is it cheaper if you pre-order it?

Eh, please Valve, cancel this while you still can, you've already ruined TF2 and L4D with comics. Don't ruin Portal too.

TF2s comics were funny when they were silly little one shots, but once they provided backstory to a game that doesn't need any, and even managed to contradict what little lore the damn game has (like the Demo's backstory), it all started getting tiresome. And then they just kick us in the shins by reducing Saxton Hale from a memetic badass to an amoral schemer.

The L4D comics were even worse as they managed to make all four survivors behave out of character, and once again contradicting a character's established backstory. And somehow the most pragmatic member of the team has become a self-sacrificial emotional sap. Way to honour Bill guys, way to go. And to really kill it off they give the other three survivors the most undignified send-off imaginable, just letting them sail off to a bloody tropical isle with no real closure.

And now they bring this same talentless writer on board for a Portal comic? Do they hate their fans or their own creations or something?

They make great in-game stories, but the comics are terrible.

That's why you preorder it on Steam for $45.
Or ya know, just buy the orange box, 5 games for the price of one and they're all awesome.

Retailers in Australia have it for $110 AUS on consoles and $80 AUS on PC. Which is why I went 'screw you' and pre purchased for $45 on Steam. Fortuneately Valve don't pull the bullshit that games are priced differently based on region.
Please tell me that AUS $ are worth less than US $?
Indeed no! Australia dollars are worth fractionally MORE than US dollars (about 1.04 USD currently). It's just that australian retails are GIGANTIC DOUCHEBAGS who think australian consumers are too fucking stupid to realise that a price which was reasonable when 1AUD=.8USD is not reasonable now.

Oh, and they like to whine like little bitches about how unfair it is that online stores are forcing them out of business and that they cannot compete.

And so, most sane people - especially when buying a game from valve - buy it via steam, or off amazon UK or US or similar. The later two especially when buying a game from the douchenozzles who try to sell games on steam at massively inflated prices, now that steam doesn't let you just claim to be in a different country.
sometimes I hate my country....

we pay a lot more for EVERYTHING else as well.

I hate it when comics adopt that "Hey let's be artsy by drawing everywhere and make it look like the artists had seizures while doing their work" thing.
I agree, that short of thing drives me crazy when I'm trying to read something. Glad to know I'm not the only who feels this way about it. :D

From Portal I was expecting a lot more cute and clean artwork...

But looks like the artist had other plans.

I say the artwork sucks. IMHO, cuz it's art.

The binary from Chell's file, seen here [http://comics.ign.com/dor/objects/105745/portal-2-lab-rat/images/exlusive-read-portal-2-part-1-20110408101015617.html?page=mediaFull]. Translated, it reads... "The cake is a lie." Check here [http://www.roubaixinteractive.com/PlayGround/Binary_Conversion/Binary_To_Text.asp] if you don't buy it.

I believe this is going to be the final word on the matter. You were never going to get it, and in Portal 2, it's likely long gone. The cake is dead.

Whoo, anyway, I love the comic so far. Doug is very interesting, I like both art styles, and I can't wait to see how it continues :D

Then I'm afraid you entirely missed the point of Portal.

If you look deeper into the Portal world, you'll find that the clean and cutesy is a cover up for the twisted darkness that it's really set in. It's creepy, psycological and dark, and the comic did an excellent job at portraying the insanity, greatly assisted by the wild artwork.

Damn. It's "tomorrow". Valve doing its valve thing.
Ah well-

They may be bad at release dates,
but they do damn fine stuff.

Depends on the console. It's $5 (USD) less for preordering no matter which version, but the computer version is only $50 USD, as opposed to the $60 for the consoles. Preordering that brings it down to $45, and there is a 2-pack which brings the price to $80 for two copies (So down to $40).
Don't know how that translates, but it's how they do it here.
