Meh, as long as they don't "take him to the Swingin' Sixties!!!!!!!!!!!" I'll be okay with it (they can't exactly REPEAT le Bouf and Aliens, can they?)

Why is anyone surprised by this? It was painfully obvious at the end of the last one that they were contemplating another sequel. Also, aliens and Area 51 fit perfectly into Indiana Jones mythology, they're just different from the supernatural/spiritual aspects of the first three films.

They are just different from the rest of the series.... yeah that sums it up.
We LIKED the rest of the series. For alien rigmarol we'd put the telly on X-Files or Star Trek.

Salvation was an improvement on Rise of the Machines, at least.
Plus, it had Moon Bloodgood in it. *sizzle*

It fits the model that George Lucas was going for. The first three take place in the 30s and are based on pulp adventure stories about ghosts and supernatural stuff. The fourth movie is in the 50s, when the Red Scare was going on in the States and sci-fi really started to become a popular subject in pulp comics and stories. So yes, the fourth one being different does sum it all up. Just do a little research/reading on Lucas' process and explanation. You may not like the change, but it makes sense considering his approach.

Yep. I lose credibility. Read up, read the responses to this, and then you will see just how much credibility I have lost. I get that you aren't fond of me Cleverlymadeup, but wandering around from thread to thread like this with snippy little comments isn't the best way of dealing with that.

The old movies are something different. They were fun for reasons which are lost on you. They never had aliens, they didn't have Indy married and fighting arthritis, they didn't have "Mutt" irritating the hell out of everyone.

You just don't get the point. It isn't that things were "better", it is that you don't take an old idea and fuck with it just for the sake of being different.

What movie is from your generation? Dark Knight? Right, lets say that in twenty years time, someone remakes the Dark Knight but instead of Batman being a dark and tortured soul trying desperately to stop a sociopathic psychopath, it turns out that the reason the Joker is the way he is is that he got abducted by aliens who inserted a chip in his head. Batman decided to become Batman because he was a world sporting champion who decided to use his athletic ability for good. And, rather than Batman trying to fight the Joker and his henchmen, he has to find a cunning way to stop the alien weaponry from working and interfere with the alien mind chip.

Wouldn't that make you go "URGH! FUCK!"?
actually the very first movie i saw in theaters, on it's original run, was Star Wars. yes i'm in a generation before you. so there goes your theory right about me having no clue. i was still young when i saw Raiders of the Lost Ark, on it's original theatrical run as well and the same goes for all the Star Wars and Indiana Jones movies.

in fact i'm probly the only person in this thread who can actually claim something like that. actually i'm probly one of the few Escapists who can actually make that claim.

so once again you have NO clue what you are talking about with these movies, the Indiana Jones movies are based on the old pulp novels and the pulp heroes of the 30s-50s. if you bothered to listen to ANYTHING Lucas has ever said about Indy or Star Wars, which is apparent most people have not, then you'd understand and know that aliens fit right into the scheme of things.

as for aliens no fitting in? sorry to say but they make the best fit for Indy based on the time frame of the movie. during the 30s and 40s of the original 3, there was the war with the Nazis and the Nazis liked the occult stuff. the 50s were all about the Russians and .... drum roll please ...... ALIENS.

you still look at the original ones as a child and put it on a pedestal. maybe you should actually watch the movies as an adult and see it thru the eyes of an adult. you wanted the new Indy movie and probly Star Wars, to bring back your childhood, which it can't and will never do. so grow the hell up and don't look at it like a child, look at it like an adult.
I agree, but Indy 4 was still a big pile of steamy something or other...

They just need to let it die.

Why is it that when someone still likes something from their childhood, the item in question is seen as 'childish' and therefore can not be good since a person is now an 'adult'?
You can still enjoy an old movie, looking at it with the eyes of an adult, and not be blinded by nostalgia. In fact, the whole 'nostalgia' trip is a weak reason to dislike something or label something as bad or childish.
Instead of looking at it like an adult, why don't you look at it as a source of fun.

That's... That's just plain wrong. I've been an Indy fan since before I can remember and the fourth movie was a giant pile of ass. I think they just need to let the franchise die and let Mr. Ford alone.

I will lose all faith in Harrison Ford if he agrees to do this. And if they choose to use someone else other than Ford it won't do anything in the theaters (money wise). Ford makes the series.

Ok, first we find out that there's gonna be a Spiderman reboot, secondly earlier today I found out there will be a remake of Ferris Bueler's Day Off...not joking, and now a possible 5th Indiana Jones movie?!?!

I don't wanna call it so early in the year but if I actually hear about a Back to the Future sequel or a reboot/remake/unnecessary sequel of any other classic film that I haven't heard about yet then 2010 will be remembered as the year of movie reduxs.

So by this logic, Indy V will be about Vietnam and Hippies?

It could be worse than we thought...

I was okay with the 'ahem' inter-dimensional beings... Indy was never really about the context anyway. The problem with Indy IV was that it failed to take itself seriously enough. It's like Indy knew he was in an adventure film. Which is a real shame because this is even the case despite Harrison's best efforts.
For me, Indy films were about the banter between characters not so much the situations they were in. The Star Wars prequels suffer the same problem. Scenes like Han and Leia on the falcon ("My hands are dirty too"), just weren't there in the prequels. It's those kind of moments that can really make a film believeable. Indy IV fared better for the addition of Ray Winstone's character but failed to capitalise on this by failing to flesh out his character at all...

If they cut out the fridge, the marital argument, the monkey's and Mutt Williams and you are left with a good film, but not a great one. One can only hope the three of them (Lucas, Spielburg and Ford), will realise the character has ran it's course along a conventional timeline. I'm suddenly reminded of the scene in Pirates of the Carribean where Beckett states that the world is changing and getting smaller and that Sparrow must find his 'place' in the world or perish...

Amen and hallelujah! Someone else understand what Indy is all about!
A hark back to the 1940s comic book, over the top, campy, all American bad ass action hero!

I highly enjoyed Indy 4 (Not the best in the series, but a great fit), and can't wait for a 5th one!
Also: Harrison Ford rocks my socks.
