Or I could just go about my day normally and not be all "I'M GOING TO PLAY VIDEO-GAMES AND STAY INSIDE TO PISS IN THE FACE OF CORPORATE FASCISTS CORPORATISING EMOTION" just because I don't have a boyfriend. Is the day over-blown with enough greeting cards and other cheesy paraphernalia to sink a ship? Of course it is, but be honest, when was the last time you ever saw someone you know personally buy into all that and make a huge thing of it?

Come to think of it I do sort of use the day, is it really so bad that I try and remind family and friends that I value them dearly?

I won't be doing anything special even though I'm not single. Just a regular day for me. :p

Ok Valentine?s Day (shortened to VD).

VD is an odd day, it is so commercialized it feels fake, yet it is a day to remind you about relationships. For a long time I had VD all to myself. Now that I have someone to share VD with she says she doesn't want to do anything for it. It doesn't help I have to go to the doctors on VD or is that about VD?

So I agree OP that VD should be kept in the home and not shared with the world. So I shall enjoy my VD at home doing whatever I want to do? Use your VD to get cheap candy after all they always stock too much.

Enjoy your VD everyone!

I don't really get involved with my parents, as they are totally oblivious to the world I live in. My brothers are spending time with their wife/gf, and I'm going to be homealone all day. The one girl I was thinking about asking out just starting dating this other dude for the 3rd time. So I'm basically destined to be all alone on V-day.

The solution is EASY: take a page out of my adopted country of Japan:

Introduce three types of chocolate giving -

'duty; honour; courtesy; gratitude; obligation' chocolates
'Friendship' chocolates
'True feeling; love' chocolates

There. Everybody gets something, but I'm pretty sure the 'I-me-my' people will object to the idea of giving something for supposedly 'nothing', ie the first two types.

I'm pretty sure this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Victory_in_Europe_Day came first.

The VDay you mentioned, I've never even heard of before now.

I never understand the people who play the 'too commercialised/fake/popular' cards. Pretty much EVERY event or day which defines our culture is commercialised in some way. That's the nature of Capitalism; it's the nature of having a society with a culture. Birthdays are commercialised. Weddings are commercialised. Such events are integral rites in our society. Such events make money. Everybody has a birthday. A great number of people still get married, some several times. Would you ever adopt another person's imposed meaning for something personal to you; ie, would you define your love for somebody by how another person does? Would you define your feelings for you something by how another person does? I'm sure you wouldn't. You shouldn't.

Valentine's Day (TM)(R)(C) is commercialised as a BRAND, and if that's the definition of the day you wish to use, then so be it. However, Valentine's day really means whatever you wish it to mean. The reason I don't, nay, CAN'T, understand the argument outlines in the first paragraph, is because I've strived for so long to SELF-define the world and my actions in it. I don't care what other music people listen to, or what they think of mine. I don't care what clothes they wear, or brands they buy. I certainly don't care that millions of people are going out to dinner with a special person on Feb. 14th. All I care about is what I BELIEVE the day to mean, and that's why on Feb. 14th, when I have somebody, I have a fantastic time. And when I don't have somebody, I have at least a great time. I don't care what companies or people say about the day. The only meaning and value it has, is what I give it; the same goes for all meaning in the world.

Well then all the power to you, having a girlfriend shouldn't matter moreso on Valentine's day (like Stasisesque I can't really say V-day without feeling like I owe liberties to the Churchill family) than any other day just because the day's named after a Christian martyr...but I hardly see how the day should be warranting as much angst as what the escapist seems to have turned this thread into, it's like listening to a bunch of sad old men becoming sadder and older than usual and talking about lost youth whenever the latest titties-and-alcohol-centric rap video comes on.

Upon observation I suppose Valentines Day isn't as much of a big deal (or even the same sort of holiday) in Australia than it is in The United States (mostly) so take that and my comment as you will.

I think Valentines day should be something much more private between the couples.

Whos with me?
Thank you.
Yes. I finally have myself a decent woman. I don't want to parade her around, I should take her somewhere quiet, out for dinner, home. That's it.
As for your girl issue, just get one of your friends to assault a girl, "beat him up," problem solved. Even if you don't get the assaulted girl, in College, word spreads fast.

It's coming already? Well whatever, seeing as that it's my day off I planned on drinking and playing video games anyways, so this doesn't change anything.

Only the fact that I'm constantly reminded that I'm single and I have to hear about what my friends are going to do with their boy/girlfriends the whole damn day.

Never liked Valentines day. It's impossible to get a table at a restaurant and there's always the issue of people wanting to go out and rent a double bike. "No, I don't want to ride the swan peddle-boat either."

I gladly tell all of my partners from day one: Valentines Day = No.

Thankfully, all of them thus far have accepted it as such.

I'll forget it, like I do every year, and just do what I normally do. Lately that's been lazing around.

Seriously, I can never remember what day Valentine's day is on. Every year I forget.

I'd probably remember it if I was with someone. Maybe not. My memory likes to forget things I want to remember, and remember things I want to forget.

Stupid memory.

What you are talking about did come first, but it's called VE day, not V-day.

Hell, V-Day will probably pass without me even noticing. Never been a big fan of the holiday and the fact that I have no "significant other" makes it all the more pointless for me. So yeah, video games and porn internet for me.
