I never understand the people who play the 'too commercialised/fake/popular' cards. Pretty much EVERY event or day which defines our culture is commercialised in some way. That's the nature of Capitalism; it's the nature of having a society with a culture. Birthdays are commercialised. Weddings are commercialised. Such events are integral rites in our society. Such events make money. Everybody has a birthday. A great number of people still get married, some several times. Would you ever adopt another person's imposed meaning for something personal to you; ie, would you define your love for somebody by how another person does? Would you define your feelings for you something by how another person does? I'm sure you wouldn't. You shouldn't.
Valentine's Day (TM)(R)(C) is commercialised as a BRAND, and if that's the definition of the day you wish to use, then so be it. However, Valentine's day really means whatever you wish it to mean. The reason I don't, nay, CAN'T, understand the argument outlines in the first paragraph, is because I've strived for so long to SELF-define the world and my actions in it. I don't care what other music people listen to, or what they think of mine. I don't care what clothes they wear, or brands they buy. I certainly don't care that millions of people are going out to dinner with a special person on Feb. 14th. All I care about is what I BELIEVE the day to mean, and that's why on Feb. 14th, when I have somebody, I have a fantastic time. And when I don't have somebody, I have at least a great time. I don't care what companies or people say about the day. The only meaning and value it has, is what I give it; the same goes for all meaning in the world.
