Right hello. Yeah. I was in my English lesson today. It was pretty laid back and due to an earlier incident The topic of Racism and homophobia was brought up. The person sitting in front of me went? Homophobia? what's that. (it gets worse) I explained somewhat shocked he didn't know that. Then he preceded to insist it was "wrong" and should be a crime (homosexuality). Of course that bugged me (not gay) so I went to defend against this complete buffoon. My reward? The entire 30 person class of supposed intellectuals yelling me down because I support gay rights. I mean what? They were saying things like "Yeah well I don't want that up there" supposedly assuming every gay person is a rapist. And that it's a choice. A choice? I mean what?

So as for discussion. Can you share similar moments when you are over come by a wave of undefinable levels of stupidity by one of even a group of people?

I'm English and in a rather "normal" area

Oh my god... Your THAT stupid?

Should be:

Oh my god...you're THAT stupid?

Honestly if you didn't rant about how this was in an English lesson I'd have left it. =P

On topic tho, you really should have pointed out that Hitler had a similar view on Homosexuals. Usually shuts people up when they realise they're pushing Nazism.

Your post makes it seem like he thought homophobia was wrong. Weird wording.
As for meeting high levels of stupidity: I worked fast food for 6 years, retail for 4 years, and at Wal-Mart for about a year.
I know exactly what stupid is. I actually have a saying that my wife and I act out every time someone does something we don't understand. Some guy will rip across 3 lanes of traffic, cutting people off, and then slam on his brakes when nothing is in front of him, and my wife will ask 'What is that guy thinking?!' to which I ask: "Honey, what are people?" And she, resigned, says "Stupid." It explains most behavior, though we have that back-and-forth more often then I'd like.

"YOU'RE that stupid."

Your = possessive
You're = you are

And that does sound a little dramatic. But what can you do, some people are just idiots like that.

Where do you go to school?

Also, keep in mind that people aren't stupid for having opinions. People are stupid if they take a social stand and can't defend their position logically.

EDIT: I feel like I need to provide an example. A friend of mine is anti-gay marriage. His stance is the adoption issue that comes up and that a child should grow up with parents that provide both a male and female influence. I disagree with him, but I can see his logic. It's the people that basically argue "WHRRGARBL! NO GAYS IN MAH KUNNTREE!" or "LBRAGRRHW! U INNTOHLERUNT NATZEE!" that are stupid on this one.

I hadn't realized that anti-gay sentiment was actually that strong in England. I guess it's one of those misconceptions that I have as an American liberal, to imagine England and other western European countries to be far more progressive than my own. I mean, I live in Oklahoma, which is right in the bible belt, the focal point of conservativism here in America. Hell, we were the only state in which not even a single district went for Obama during the last election. But I rarely ever saw anti-gay sentiment expressed like that in school.

Anyways, as for undefinable stupiditiy. Well, when I was taking World History our teacher was going over Oligarchy (the form of government) with us, and this kid who sat a couple of chairs in front of me just suddenly bursts out "Oligarchy! Is that where they got Olive Garden from?!" I guess the similarity of the words "Oligarchy" and "Olive Garden" had been too overpowering for his mind. Then again, this was the same kid who once ate Miracle Grow to see if it'd make him grow any faster. Needless to say, he wasn't exactly the brightest light in the outhouse.

Yes, but do you really want to win on the strength of Godwin's Law? It's like winning a fight against a cripple by kicking him in the nuts.

That said, a lot of things have forced me to re-assess my opinion on the entry level of universities in my country. The fact that people cane go an entire lifetime thinking that Europe = part of the USA is just ASTOUNDING.

I was actually thinking the same thing.

On Topic: What's wrong with that? I mean, sure, some people are going to support Gay Rights like you do, and some people are going to be against homosexuals alltogether.

He means homosexuality, poor wording (Ironic considering he was talking about an English class)

That's the kind of thing I say, especially when discussing the news and so on.

Not really, your misconception is that based on this one persons' class, all of England is homophobic.

Generally speaking the UK is accepting of homosexuals, we have a fair few very famous celebrities and comedians who have no problem with being open about it (and so back-lash as far as I am aware of).

We went to visit the VoC Ships back when i was in school, i think 4 years ago and the teacher told this story about a man related to the story that took place in 1800 something like that.
One girl raised her hand and asked if that guy was still alive, The worst part is, Only me and the person next to me seemed to find this to be incredibly stupid. Way to go school

yeah, some lad once said he despised gays, only for us to find out he was gay himself.
That's not uncommon. People fear rejection because of their sexuality so they cover it up by acting homophobic so people don't suspect they may be gay/bi/whatever. Classic deflection.

i had to laugh once. In highschool i was branded a lesbian (long story cut short my words had been twisted during an argument with another girl, involved a medical problem that causes me to stare into space, which i had no control over but i was staring towards her and she thought it was because i was a lesbian). Any way, this other girl used it against me for 3 years. Only last week did i suddenly remember that one of her mates was openly Bisexual and frequently had girlfriends and boyfriends, yet it was me who got called a "dyke" and crap like that (oh, could someone please explain where that term came from in relation to lesbian...) It makes me laugh to think she picked on me but not her mate, then agian, the girl could probably beat her up coz she fairly strong.

Seriously though, how stupid or evil can you get, picking on someone (who wasn't even a lesbian) but one of your mates is messing with both sexes... I mean, WTF?

He was in a class full of people who didn't know what "Homophobia" meant. They're a bunch of idiots. =P

It's not just "Godwin's, STFU" either. A core part of Nazism was racial 'purity' and stuff, so hatred of homosexuals was a pretty major part of it.
