You didn't realise a game called The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion wasn't the first in it's series?

And try both. They're quite different from each other; always been an Oblivion man myself. Morrowind is huge though - I mean ridiculously so.

Just my personal opinion. I loved Fallout 3 and am loving New Vegas so far. I did not like Oblivion. It was boring. You level up by actions. Meaning you could jump and jump and jump until you level up. Not a terrible idea but it was abuseable for sure. I also found the combat to be rather terrible, as a melee class. It also had very little/slow progression.

Obviously a lot of people love that game and all, which is great... for them. But it's NOT like Fallout 3 or NV. Other than being an open world and voice acted RPG.

Morrowind is like Oblivion but every couple of minutes you have to enter a load screen that feels like a decompression chamber, every once in a while the game kicks you in the nuts and tells you you simply aren't good enough to defeat the level 3 bandits... what? you just started playing?... what kind of pussy are you!?! (Game freezes, redo last hour of gameplay)... 10 weeks worth of playing later you are rediculously overpowered and the game becomes boring. That was my experience of the game, but oddly enough the game makes you hate it so much you want to prove the game wrong and show it you are somebody!

Oblivion by comparison is kind of boring and lacks that kind of mind altering hate Morrowing gave you.

Morrowind is much more of an RPG than Oblivion or the new Fallout titles. I won't necessarily recommend it, because modern games tend to hold the player's hand way too much, and you might be in for quite a shock with Morrowind. Don't get me wrong, it's on my best games ever list, but the combat is NOT action oriented, but determined by chance. Mana (or Magicka) doesn't regenerate by itself, and there is no compass that points you in the direction of your next objective. Still, the setting is amazing, wonderfully immersive, and the story is pretty good, too. Choices matter, but they are subtle, there is a ton of freedom, and quite a bit to discover. Of course there is a down point: fucking cliffracers.
tl;dr: get it, but don't ***** when you find it a bit difficult.
Oblivion is quite a bit like fallout, action-y, fast, lots of comfort options, etc. Still, it looks quite nice (npcs and the laughable number of voice actors aside), and it feels like a "real" fantasy world. It's a fun game, with lots of exploration, so by all means get it.

Oblivion is a good game that you will likely enjoy as a Fallout fan. Its accessible, simple enough and fun.
Morrowind is a very different animal. Its incredibly difficult to get into and the combat isn't as immediately satisfying as Oblivion's. However, in the long run it is far deeper and incredibly immersive. In my own experience, I played it until one of the early quests when I finally gave up since things were getting too annoying. Coming back to it 6 months later, I played it a little more, then some more, until I'd become absolutely lost in it. I played it mostly about 3-4 years ago, and it still remains the single most immersive game I've ever played, far beyond great games from Baldur's Gate in '98 up to Mass Effect 2 a few months ago. Oblivion was good, but Morrowind had that special quality that's impossible to define, not least because not every player experiences it. I kind of remember certain things in Oblivion, but I can recall so many places in Morrowind, I can remember the winding streets, the best travelling routes, the most interesting weapons, and a story that completely captivated me and made me consciously build on it in my mind and make it my own.
I'd recommend playing Morrowind first and seeing how you go. If you're not going with it, so be it, try Oblivion and I'm sure you'll like it, but whatever you do, don't simply reject Morrowind out of hand. Give it time, then go back to it, always give it a chance, because if you are one of the people who get into it you won't regret it even for a second.

Ive played through fallout and loved it, playing new vegas (or trying to until it crashes again), enjoying it but all the while im always hearing "Its oblivion with guns! Its oblivion with guns! Blaahhh!". My response of course was "well, didnt you like oblivion? thats good, then!" And continuing on my radioactive way....
Careful there.

My Good friend got both games, Hated Oblivion and loved Fallout. I was the opposite. They are similar, but not the same.

Whatever, just wash your hands.
I liked morrowind better but by todays standards its ugly as hell so oblivion is probably a better choice since the forests are just so pretty to ride tho

Oblivion is honestly the best game I've played in a very long time... get the GOTY edition and be prepared to have a fucking awesome time.

There's so much shit and the environment is so damn cool.

Ugh, don't bother. Oblivion, in my opinion, was boring as hell. I could not get into it. Bethesda did a much better job with Fallout 3 and New Vegas. Oblivion is too big and too slow and expects you to read too many text walls.

Personally, I think Oblivion kicks ass. But I never played Morrowind, so maybe that's why. Also, it's actually called The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. And Oblivion came out several years after Morrowind, so they're hardly "twin brothers".

First, I'd recommend Morrowind. Sure the gameplay isn't as interesting as Fallout 3 or Oblivion (it's a bit close to Fallout 1 and 2 actually), but the atmosphere and the plot is so much deeper and complex. Also Morrowind came out in 2002, so bear that in mind if you do play it.

If you absolutely fall in love with Morrowind to the point that you can forgive it's flaws, I also recommend playing Daggerfall. It's a bit harder to enter on (the game's almost older than I am), but the story is amazing. Plus it's free. Don't bother with Arena.

So which is it people? You failed to tell me theres two twin brothers named Oblivion and Morrowind! So which one is the good one? Should i play Oblivion or Morrowind, keeping in mind that I like fallout and a good game? And whats the difference?
Play Daggerfall. (DUN dun DUUUUUUN!)

Morrowind has a finicky combat system, but Oblivion has a simpler (more boring) magic system and smaller world.

I'll be another to stand up for Oblivion.

Morrowind is touted as "having a better story" or "being really immersive", and perhaps it was, the year it was released. However, time hasn't been kind to poor old Morrowind, and if we take Yahtzee's definition of "immersive" - letting you forget that it's a game with gameplay and designers and bugs - then Oblivion, sans all the myriad bugs and just plain problems stemming from its overcomplexity that plagued Morrowind, is by far the more immersive.

There's also the fact that I have yet to meet someone who played Oblivion first who liked Morrowind better - or even someone who played Morrowind for the first time after 2006 who liked Morrowind better than Oblivion, whenever they got around to playing it. Many diehards will have you believe that playing Oblivion "spoils" the experience of Morrowind, but I've come to the conclusion that it's simply one of the most dramatic examples of nostalgia goggles. Oblivion is just the better game.

Whichever edition of Oblivion you do get, by the way, GOTY or otherwise, be sure to install the "Unofficial Oblivion Patch" - it fixes a lot of really minor things that Bethesda didn't have time for but also weren't a big deal - and BTmod, which cleans up the interface and menus to be a lot more convenient.

There are thousands upon thousands of mods for you to choose from once you've experienced the game a little bit, but these two will vastly improve your experience from the get-go.

I can't tell you much about Morrowind other than it's going to look pretty dated now. Oblivion is very nice to look at. I still play somtimes just to wander around the forests and the mountains. That being said, right out of the box, Fallout 3 is a better game. It wasn't until I'd changed a lot of things about Oblivion with the mods that I really liked it. My first mod was one to fix the god awful system where monsters level with you. I've kept going from there and I currently run about 325 mods. Wacky I know, but there are people out there with more. But my number is advanced modding, if someone tried it I'd suggest starting out with a few basics, the "Unique landscapes" mods for instance. If you're playing on an Xbox, well, best of luck to you.

And, if the ridiculous map size appeals to you, remember that the Daggerfall map holds the world record for largest map size at two Great Britains.

Yes, you read that right.

I got a good laugh there. You seriously didn't at least google to see what Oblivion and Morrowind were? Sequels do exist, my friend.

personally i cant play morrowind because of the retarded journal system and graphics and slightly annoying combat but it is otherwise an amazing game.

Still nice to see you care? (Your punishment for this pointless post is getting this quoted notice in your inbox. muhahahahaha)

OT: I'd say go with Oblivion. Morrowind is a bit harder to get into, and I thought Oblivion was just the better made game.

The biggest difference between the two, for me atleast, was the combat and leveling. Morrowind had bad combat and all monsters/NPCs had pre-determined stats. If you wanted to kill a bunch of vampires or such you had to go level. I did not like this. Oblivion on the other-hand had pretty decent combat and the monsters/NPCs leveled with you. I honestly liked this MUCH better than Morrowind. In Morrowind you could/had to just grind to get better, and I HATE grinding. In Oblivion, it's not a matter of what level you are, but how you leveled and what skills you used. It was very possible to level the wrong way and make the game almost impossible for yourself late game, which is something I kinda like.

Oh, and to the people who complain about Oblivion by saying how "easy it is to break" and that you can just keep increasing your skills without ever actually leveling, and who say this is a point against the game - congrats, you just "broke" a single-player only RPG and undoubtedly wasted many hours of your free time to make the game less fun. Aren't you a winner.
