To be honest I could ask the same question about the Half Life series
I second this motion.

OT: Dude, we are all entitled to our own opinions. Deal with it.

For some time now, pretty much since Mass Effect 2 released, fans haven't been able to shut up about how amazing the Mass Effect series is. This has always confused me, as having played the lengthy demos for both Mass Effect 2 and 3, I have to say that fair graphics, standard gameplay, okayish acting, and Jordan Shephard's glassy eyed mannequin head didn't even come close to impressing me. But I just rolled my eyes and got on with it.
However, in a very recent post on this very forum, a user claimed that Half Life 3 would probably not be worth the wait due to the Mass Effect series having very likely eclipsed Valve's flagship series in the meantime.

Mass Effect. Better. Than Half Life.
That was the final straw.

So I ask you all... What the fuck is the big deal?
You know, for a long time now, I've heard people constantly telling me that the Half Life series is pretty much the best thing ever. And having played Half Life 2 and the episodes, I think they're alright. Not as good as people say, but whatever. Then I heard someone say that Half Life 2 is better then Bioshock.

Half Life. Beter. Then Bioshock.

So I said "I disagree with you sir. Apparently we have differing standards when it comes to videogame quality, because it's totally fucking subjective. And that's fine. Good day!"

Because I'm a normal goddamn human being and I don't act like my opinions are fucking scripture.

And suddenly opinions! Opinions everywhere!

I could ask you the same damn question about Half-Life. In no way are the Half-Life games bad, I enjoyed them, but they are, in my opinion, incredibly overrated.

In your OP you say you've only played the demo for Mass Effect 2 and Mass Effect 3, well, you really should not be making a thread judging a game you have never properly played. You chose not to buy the game after playing the demo, that's fine, you're allowed to do that. But, playing the demos only gives you a basic grip on the gameplay. You know nothing about the characters, the story, the universe or anything that makes the series great.

I recommend you play the first game at least, before judging it. You can pick it up fairly cheap these days.

What's so great about mass effect? Well, it's a rarity in the gaming market in that it has good gameplay and a great story. Usually one of those factors is lacking. It's also an RPG, so you get to control how the game plays out which is somewhat unique among shooters.

The Mass Effect series as whole is better than the Half-Life series. Better story, game play, graphics, VO, environment ect.

But of course this all comes down to, wait for it, opinions! They're a new thing I hear.

Bioshock Infinite...what was so great about that? Bland & unlikable characters, clunky and repetitive combat, uninspired setting and plot, atrocious pacing, generic enemy types with clearly next to no imagination lavished on them.... I could go on.

I just can't figure why people liked that game so much.
I know right? Liking games before they're even out. Tsk.
Yeh, I mean in a few years time someone is going to come along and make a post about how they just don't see the appeal of said game. But why wait until then? Let's cut out all those pesky intervening years of justly praising a worthy game and cut straight to the "sheer bafflement as to why people like this fun, exciting game" stage shall we?

Indeed! Why wait! If people are going to complain about a game without even playing it, why bother waiting until it's out? If you have as much information about a game before it's release as you will have after, there's no point in not getting an early start!

I have to agree with the OP, even while being a huge sci fi fan the Mass Effect series has never seemed interesting to me. I played the ME3 demo to try and see if I was missing out on something good but I didn't really enjoy it.

Garrus. Mordin. Liara. Tali. Harbinger. Wrex vs Wreav story arc and the genofage. More Mordin. The Geth & AI story > Terminator & Skynet. The Illusive man. All the art that has come out of the franchise. For example:

And that's just touching the stuff that is out there. All of this has been created by people who have been inspired by this game series.

Maybe it doesn't appeal or inspires you. Maybe you think shooter mechanics are more important than story presentation and character depth. Maybe you should just stick to shooters with silent protagonists. What do you think?

As a lover of Sci-fi i'ld say that the greatest strength of Mass Effect is its setting, take the setting out and slap in a standard fantasy world and the series wouldn't look that special compared to other WRPGs.

Is Mass Effect good? ...yeah, but a tad overated imo

Mass Effect has a great story... and YES it has faults... but what makes it kinda cool also is how certain decisions you make carry through 3 games. Do you save Wrex in the first game? If you do you get to see him in ME2 and ME3 if you don't then you get his half brother or something like that. And its not just the big things like that there are a bunch of small things that just crop up depending on your decisions.

Granted trying to carry this many decisions across 3 games has caused for some interesting problems in ME3... lol... the whole catalyst problem mainly.

You don't play ME for the combat system or the graphics... you play it for the characters.

Also femshep > male shep when it comes to voice acting... not even a competition.

Play the first one.

EDIT: Actually it probably won't work now, but the first one is the best. When it first came out it had a great, unique atmosphere, which was lost in the sequels.

mediocre second act.
Personally I never saw it as that way. Alot of people go on saying "Oh the second one was awful!" when I find it was the best of out all three.

Still, its just opinions.
I agree. Though ME2 does little to add to the trilogy's overall arc, I felt that that was actually a good thing: it gives you a nice little in-between adventure that isn't overshadowed by the reapers. At least, not too much.

Half-life sucks.

Mass Effect is better because I can sit down and have a decent conversation with Garrus.
^this totally this it's the character interaction that makes Mass Effect so enjoyable.

Not that I don't think the OP isn't taking things a bit far, but I find many of the responses in this thread hilarious.

These people will point out that clearly the OP is just judging people on opinion, and that that is not a good thing to do.

Then, these same bloody people will then tell the OP that Half-Life does suck and that Mass Effect is better. And, they say it in a very matter-of-fact, this is quantifiable truth" kind of way. They then proceed to judge the OP on his opinion.

Oh hypocrisy. The current Escapist forums wouldn't be the same without you. (which begs the question "Why the fuck haven't we done away with it?!")

Sorry, but I prefer talking with real people for my conversations. Besides, a conversation isn't a series predetermined dialog clusters that I "choose" between by picking a premade response.

Just sayin'.

How is that an argument at all? I hate half-life, no argument at all. The only thing I really like about it is it's mod support. You CANNOT change the fact that I hate the rest of it. There is not belittling me about that opinion either. Yes I love Halo, that doesn't change anything, it doesn't devalue my opinion nor does it mean yours is better. If you don't like Halo, fine. DEAL WITH IT.

This is the first franchise I really got to sit down and learn about a character and say the closest to how I feel about something through Shepard. Thats reason enough to count as a conversation. Its not perfect but I can hardly think of any game (NOT MADE BY BIOWARE) that allows me to do that. Bethesda has it in Skyrim: Dawnguard and thats all I know of.

It easy to see that you cannot deal with the fact that I was wow'd the first time I could actually do that. Before hand I hardly paid attention to stuff like that, then 2007 rolled around and I tried Mass Effect 1 and had a blast.
