RTS? Can't beat the Total War games. Throw that shit on expert-fuck-your-face mode and spend the next six months of your life fighting for an area of 100 square miles. If you don't want to lose your hair from the stress of ulcer inducing RTS glory, I don't recommend it.

If you're looking for a good, old RTS, Total Annihilation is it. They don't get much older or better than that.

A friend recently got me into Sins of a solar empire. I thinks its great but being a star wars fan I had to install the seven deadly sins mod. Its probably one of the first space RTS games that I liked so I highly recommend it.

Any RTS with Blizzard's name on it is a go (Warcraft series and Starcraft).

I was never a big fan of the "Age of" series. They just feel too generic for my taste. The aforementioned Galactic Battlegrounds is basically a glorified mod of Age of Kings, but it's pretty neat if you like Star Wars. As a Star Wars nerd myself, I used to play it a lot just for the SW vibe (good ol' Zone! RIP).

And I know you said RTSs, but I don't see Baldur's Gate in your list. Not playing Baldur's Gate 1 and 2 is a sin.

I love Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind. Definitely one of the best old PC games I've played. The expansion was also awesome. They totally fucked up with oblivion in comparison. Morrowind boasted everything. It was a completely original different world. No creature was the same, no plant, landscape, disease, weapon, all completely original. Shame Bethesda went down the drain. Mind you I loathed Fallout 3 as well. Completely SHITE!!! Hopefully a great RPG like Morrowind may make an appearance again with all the benefits of todays tech.

Supreme Commander has by far the best interface any RTS I've ever played has. Though I haven't played SoaSE.

And I go from Dune 2 to AoE 1-3, Every Blizz RTS, Every C&C except RA2 and 3, DoW 1-2, Stronghold 1-'sader-2, Warlords Battlecry 1-3, to Mythical Warriors, to...

Etc.

My point is it's very, very, good.

is there still a big following for team fortress 1?
I believe there still is large enough one for Team Fortress Classic. I dunno about TF1.

This site [http://www.mwmythicmods.com/] will get you started. Morrowind is indeed an amazing game, but be ready for a shock if you're coming from TES4. Morrowind is more RPG than action, whereas Oblivion was the other way around.

Populous is a must to check out. I've yet to see an RTS that so naturally matches map-morphing with city-building and a pretty extensive list of diverse units. Those day-long multiplayer games were brutal though.

Morrowind is also a brilliant game. I remember leaving Seyda Neen for the first time and seeing that poor wood elf crash into the road in front of me. And I walked all the way to Balmora before realizing there was a run button.

Damn I miss those days.

I dont think anyone has said this yet but the entire "Thief" series was an sweet game, if i could play it again, i would, i miss the way you are able to actually use shadows and your shoes to hide yourself and the entire game you were sneaking, killing, stealing, and trying to survive. there is one vivid place i remember, falling down a hole of some sort and having to fight off a GIANT spider... that was one of the best parts, also just in general. water arrows all the way.

So glad someone mentioned this. Thief 2 really balanced feeling like a stealthy, fragile character while rewarding you for taking risks. Man, forgot how much I missed climbing around the cityscapes in that game.

My friend if you are an RPG fan, these are your gems.

1) Baldur's Gate series.
2) Knights of the Old Republic series.
3) Deus Ex

I also recommend the Thief series highly.
