Not RTS, but no foray into PC gaming would be complete without installing Baldur's Gate and BG2. Seriously, these are the games that launched BioWare into the forefront of the RPG genre. The story is amazing, the characters memorable, and there's a reason the game's modding community is active today, over 10 years after the initial release of the games.

Age of Empires II, with the Conquerors expansion.

if you're short on cash, then ground control is freeware. It's also awesome.

If you're willing to try it, the original Homeworld is a 3D RTS Space Opera. One of my all-time favorites. Some people have issues with the 3D aspect or it, but if my father can master the controls, you can too. The old Mechwarrior (Mecha war games) games... Freespace 1+2 (Space flight sim). Oh, and a hidden gem, Tachyon: The Fringe is a Space flight sim staring none other than Bruce Campbell. There are SO many games to point you towards... Everything listed by the others before me too... The Thief games, which are stealthy type games.

That's only partially true. Sometimes you're right, though I have a Vista computer and it runs all three Homeworld games. I did have some trouble with HW2, though I told Vista to run as administer, and no issues except a not so often crash.

I also played a bit if Mech Warrior and Tribes. Also had a couple of CS LAN games, years before Source came out.

Did you know tribes was a spin off of a sries that played nothing like it? It was called Earthseige, and it was a mech (called Hercs) piloting game, like mech warriors. It was a very good and lesser known series, that allowed you to modify your Herc with all sorts of different weapon (my favorite being the upgraded lighting thrower) to fight off the self aware robot menace bent on humanity's destruction (I know it's generic, but your CO has some funny lines). What was unique about it though was that failing a mission didn't mean game over. The war would continue with the robots winning that battle, making other missions harder. Of course too many failed missions failed equal a lost war which will game over you though. I highly recommend it as long as you don't mind the poor graphics and like mech warrior.
