There was one I remember, called WarZone 2012 or something like that. Old school and pretty awesome.

No idea, I only played C&C games and Total Annihilation (which by the way was AWESOME and needs a sequel now!). I'm sure someone on here will have your answer.
OMG! someone else who knows what total annihilation is!
And yes it does need a sequel, supreme commander didn't quite live up to it :/
Only the best RTS ever!!! Now I want to play it... I wonder if it'll work on 7...? Hmmmmm

Warzone 2100

Which has had it's source code released and numerous updates made to it since you will last have played it.

EDIT: Ninja'd, but I mentioned the fact that it's open source so woo
2100! Thats the one. Yeah I remember it was a 2000 year of some kind >.<

The game YOU are looking for, Clutch-Monkey, was called (quite simply) "Z". or "ZED" if pronounced verbally.

Red and blue robots with foul mouths.. you owned a base as did they and you "captured" other stray bases along the middle of the map. The more bases you owned the faster you produced robots.. you could upgrade your bases with turrets and get your robots to get in tanks or jeeps, etc. Also had a class system with heavy robots or lighter faster ones, etc.

There was a sequel to that game, too.. though I haven't ever played it.

I would guess Total Annihilation. Would have suggested Earth 2150 as a possible alternate but as I recall it had 3D and Zoom effects.

I think I know the game you're talking about. There were two. The first one had red dudes vs blue dudes, the second one added green dudes, who were either robots or aliens.

Be damned if I can remember the name though. And this is why I now hate you, because this is going to bug me forever. (Or at least until I go to bed).

Warzone 2100 was better though, get that from www.wz2100.net.

Z maybe? I don't really know many of the more obscure RTS, the only other one I can thing of was Mech platoon but I don't think that was for the PC.

Total Annihilation has a spiritual successor, Supreme Commander, but the first one and its expansion, not the second, and I doubt they'll ever actually make a new one. Though Total Annihilation had expansions available if you're committed to more of it.

As for an RTS that has customizable units, never heard of it, course the only RTS's I even knew of at that time were Age of Empires, Total Annihilation, and Command and Conquer, good luck with the search though.

Information to all the posters:
-the game is from '95-98
-futuristic (no Age of empires, Majesty etc.)
-It was serious, and not funny or quirky.
-An RTS game where you build units and the main units were mech-like "creatures" with changeable(customizable) arms, legs and maybe torso (Metal Fatigue).
-No 3d graphics. Graphics like StarCraft.
-No first person shooter/third person shooter. It's a RTS.
-It wasn't a very popular game. More of an underdog. At that time, I was very young and internet(?) hadn't really entered our household yet, so I didn't keep up to date with internet reviews or magazine reviews of games and such..

It is not Alpha Cnetaurii or any of the Command & Conquer-series.
The theme is Science fiction/space.

Thanks! Just keep posting I you will. I get alot of good tips and are getting closer to the game of my search! Thanks, everybody! I'm very sorry my information is so lacking.

The game I am looking for is an old RTS game. I've estimated that the game was released around 1995-1998. It's graphics are similiar to StarCraft and KKnD and such games of that era. No 3D, zooming or panning with the camera.
Ok, the game itself was nothing major; It featured two or three(?) races that you could choose from and they all had the same structure system as StarCraft/Red Alert; buy this factory, build this unit and so on. But, the thing that I really liked with this game, was that you could customize your units. You could customize your units from arms till feet. I don't remember if the torso or the head was changeable. The process was very like the process in the game "Metal Fatigue": you put parts on a "body" and then you accept it into the world. Pretty cool! The game was based in space on the races homeplanets I believe.
I'm thinking Earth 2140 http://uk.gamespot.com/pc/strategy/earth2140/index.html
Looks very Red Alert, but if it's anything like 2150 and 2160, it should have bucket-loads of customisation :)

1997 puts it perfectly in your time period too. Check it out - I think it could be the one ;)

Can't be. While it had nice unit customization, it's gameplay was more like Civilization than Warcraft or KKnD. There were also more than two or three races, though in Alpha Centauri they were called factions (as only the expansion introduced playable factions that weren't human)

Customizable units, eh? Might be War, Inc., although it's not that futuristic and certainly not taking place on other planets.

Hmm. I do seem to remember an RTS closely matching your description, but I've forgotten its name. Looking for it now.
