Okay, here is a place to rip, rage, and praise all your favorite Real Times Stratagies.

THIS ENTIRELY EXCLUDES STARCRAFT. I'm sick of every fanboy whining about how starcraft is the most amazing RTS in the world.

>.>

Mine is a bridge between Outpost 2, and Outpost 1, outpost 1 because it takes colony management to an ENTIRELY new level, and Outpost 2 because I actually made a few missions for it once the OP2 community got a hold of it and got it mostly cracked. Yay freeware!

pretty much Age of Empires. The series had it's humble beginnings during the early 2000's and late 90's, and were one of the first games I've ever played. That, and the developer (formerly known as Ensemble) was the only developer who managed to make a good RTS on a console.

Total Annihilation: Kingdoms was certainly one of my first I remember enjoying.
Not a clue if it's any good as I was about 10, but I've only heard good things about Total Annihilation.

Moved onto CnC Red Alert 2 after that though and played the shit out of it, still play that on occasion.

StarCraft can suck it. Now,Supreme Commander 1...THAT is a good RTS game. Nukes are actually nukes, and the warefare scales up to the point where you have flying death machines the size of a mountain shitting out nuke bombers!

I'm not sure how 'old' we're talking, but I'll always have a soft spot for Command and Conquer. Not so much the 'normal' line with GDI and Nod, but more Generals, which in spite of fan-hate strikes me as a parody par excellence lampooning the geocentric approach most people have to international politics, and Red Alert, which has a grip on reality that is presently so tenuous it may as well be greased with lard.

If we want older -and- obscure, I did get an unusual amount of enjoyment out of Psygnosis' Metal Fatigue, which, while blatantly unfair in regards to how the AI interpreted who would win in what should be a straight up fight so long as you weren't watching, was both highly customizable and extremely entertaining since you could collect together a bunch of giant clanking mechs and wail on each other...and steal their parts after they blow up. Salvage makes me happy.

I really got into RTS's when I started playing an emulated version of Warcraft: Orcs and Humans. I know you said no Starcraft, but you must admit that far less people ever talk about this forgotten relic!

Have always and will always love Red Alert 2 (Yuri expansion included), my mates and I used to have awesome LAN battles with it.
In fact it got to the stage where we would rent a club room or similar to be able to have 2 or 3 day unstoppable fun.

Have never really got into any since with the same level of enthusiasm and always seem to go back.

There's an old DOS game called "Medwar" (or Medieval War). Basically a predecessor to Sid Meyer's Civilization. It's one of few games from that era I can still boot up and stand to play for awhile.

Warcraft 3 helped inspire an entire new genre of games (DotA-clones), a genre which is likely going to be exceedingly popular as an e-sport with the release of DotA 2.

How many other RTS games can make that same claim?

Dawww... Poor Ol' Age of Mythology..
There's no denying that that's the best RTS ever made. :3
I wish I could play it, but I'm a bit of a graphics whore. :c
Nothing cooler than upgrading your hopolites to the max, and seeing them annihilate some Cyclops. ^_^

Starcraft is the best RTS of all times, but haters gonna hate no matter what.

Other than Starcraft, i really liked Age of Mythology (not a big fan of age of empires though)

Huge Total Annihilation fanboy here. Only now that Supreme Commander is out am I able to enjoy something other than TA. It killed all interest in Starcraft for me. Yup, I've never played Starcraft. Not even once.

He said old... and there's been no love for Dune 2? Come on... that game was awesome in its day!

[sub]but yeah, I'm a Supreme Commander fan too... [sub]I'm also a fan of the Supcom->TA conversion mod, however incomplete it is at the moment.[/sub][/sub]

Oh the times that were had in Age of Empires 2, I remember I always used cheat codes, because who needs challenge when you can wreck everything with machine gun firing cars!

Edit: A 1000th post about sports cars shooting machine guns at medieval soldiers and buildings... didn't see that coming

Edit2: You don't like starcraft, therefore we can't say it is our favorite? What?
