So is this one:
http://imgs.xkcd.com/comics/how_it_works.png

Xbox live is becoming more equal, but as i play less and less nowadays i cant make a point with much evidence. Back in the ghost recon 1 days i played against girls and apart from the camping ones it was just like playing against anyone else.

Thebobmaster - I'm curious why you find my reply hilarious due to my avatar. Are you assuming I look down on women or am some sex-obsessed pervert because I have an avatar of Quagmire. Or is it simply I love Family Guy, and the only avatar I could find was one of Quagmire?

What a great article! It just goes to show you that over the years these topics are still the same. So sad...but I'm not surprised.

One explanation maybe...

I am single and looking, and i guess many guys playing do.
Quite a lot of guys who are single and looking are as faar i can tell pretty much acceptable beside one flaw.

They play games.

That offcourse is a big flaw, because it means that a lot of time is spend on it, you do not get to any decent level anywhere without investing a lot of hours, two hours each weekend wont do.

Relationships often result in the choice "Girlfriend or games?"

If you are casual about games no brainer, if it is your mainhobby it means sacrificing something big.

So what does any middle income, avergae decent guy single and looking for does look for?

A girl who likes to play games!

Do girls in RL run around with a "gamer" tattoed to there foreheads?

Nope.

So where do you meet this extremly precious and someway rare species who fullfills already the one big default every "gaming guy" looks for?

Online games!

I do not speak about "sex", I speak about living with someone and all that stuff.

So yes, girls in games will be as long an issue as long there are few girls playing games, or at least as long it is hard to find girls who are looking and do play games (and you can identify outside online games as such)

(And i consider the 14 year olds on hormones crapping all over the screen with "dirty language" annoying too)

It is a simple fact of life that people look for similar people to hook up with in something like permanent, and that one of the main issues is that booth should share the main interest so it is for booth sides fun to spend time together, and not one of booth yawning most the time.

So if i meet a girl inside a game i will offcourse be "interested" as much as i would be meeting a girl RL i know does game (As soon i get the feeling that i could imagine doing the "growing old together" thing with her)

I do not think that is weird or something like that, it is simply the way that I would like to have booth, a "permanent GF/SO" and play games, and on top of that do it with her together because i would consider that a lot of fun, more fun than getting my eardrums blastet visiting loud dance places, or leave a fortune going shopping, or crawl up mountains or do a lot of perfectly ok and not weird things i simply consider not fun (and no i am neither overweight or skinny)
I consider simply most things "normal" people do no fun, but do not think a girl should sit beside me and get bored out of her mind because i like gaming, or I have to do the same with what interests her, so that is what my rambling is about.

I try to find out in some covert way if "she" is looking too, and if yes if i am "acceptable", if not she is a fellow gamer, period.

The sad truth is i know a lot of gaming girls, all happily married though, dammit!

Just read this today, and yeah, much of it is true from my experience. Being an avid gamer and also an active player of WoW, I have met many [guys] who hold this same attitude of "Oh ur a girl? ROFLPIX?".

Having played WoW for quite a while [read : 3 years] I have been thoroughly cured of any noobishness[everyone is a noob when they start out] and i find that i have become shy(hmm thats not really the word but closest i can think of right now)of telling others of my sex. I now prefer to let them ASSUME that I am male as well, to avoid the "how r u babe?" "been naughty hun?" "can i hav ur msn sexy?" "can i see ur pic plz" "wanta b my GF im 14" etc that I went through in my early noobier 1st server days.

That is the reason why, like the girl you described in your post (@OP) I REFUSE to open my mouth on vent. Even though I am not the only girl in my guild, I AM the only one who is...uh...of a younger age group? Yeah. Teen girl playing WoW on her own? First thing people read into that would be : 1. Fat, Ugly 2. Desperate 3.Internet Whore
All of which is not true(I'm not saying there aren't girls like that, I'm just not one of them). Having a passion for gaming does not make you any of these, I would proudly say, for I myself would be living proof. As a result, on my new server(since 07), only my Guild Master and 4 others [one of which was like CYBORZLOL] knows about my gender. And only my GM and 2 others know my age [again the one who was CYBORZLOL >_>]

I really hope that this sexist way of thought will dissolve in time, or at least the guys will let girls play in peace without thinking derogatory thoughts either cause we are gaming or we apparently 'suk' but I guess it will take a while. A long, long while. (Hope I'm not dead by then)..............

There is so much truth to this story, and it is so, so sad. When I revealed that I was a girl by speaking on vent, I was suddenly treated a whole lot better by the guild. Within the next week, I was getting requests for pictures a few times a day, and when I eventually did post a picture in my guild's picture thread on our forums, it all just got worst. People literally paid me to be their "e-girlfriend," someone linked my picture on the official WoW forums and I got nonstop tells about how I must be an e-whore for linking a picture. Yeah, except it was never intended to be seen by the entire server community, it was just for the guild who I had spent months with and grown to really like. No one took me seriously anymore, they just saw me as someone who used her looks/being a girl to get ahead. It was a terrible mistake on my part to think that I was on an equal level with the guys and that me linking my picture was no worse than them linking theirs. I've come to the conclusion that it is better to just keep quiet.

"I am a girl, but girls do not exist on the internet." Whitney 'Teleios' Butts relates her multiplayer gaming experiences, as a girl on the internet.

I'm sensing a T*TS or GTFO in the making.

PP: WoW geeks are the geeks of all geeks as far as geeks go. they're also the largest population of 12-15 kiddies gathered around a single place on teh netz. So no wonderz it are teh pwnage over there - I've tried gowing to a WoW realm IRC channel - the topic to the channel was set at "Have fun and ignore the retards.".

PPP: Girls are still a rarity on the nets - it's somewhat linked to the fact that a girl naturally has a higher chance of developing a life and thus evading any activity related to not leaving home unless you need to shop for food and being a virgin.

Well I personally know one very cool girl who plays Horde on WoW (Illidan) and tends to be reaaly awesome about stuff but she's also a fellow Anon so I guess that explains things.

God I miss my IRC channel...

Wow, i just read your article, and just wow. I never knew people online could be so ignorant, stupid, immature, *rambles off on a tangent spewing words with increased ferocity*.
When i was reading it i was just in awe that real people could actually be so stupid, it beggars belief truly. I think my faith in humanity just decreased further, that's assuming i had an faith in it to begin with.
Girls, to me, are people like just like the rest of us(that's because they are lol)and as such should be treated with the exact same respect you would give your male peers. You wouldn't ask a male friend who you've never met before for their picture would you? So why think that that behaviour is acceptable with women? It's fucking disrespectful and degrading. I actually feel ashamed of guys when they do stupid shit like this, just solidifying the stereotype that we all don't believe there are girls on the internet.

I just can't understand the reasoning behind it all, out of the 6 million odd people on the world, how could they think that only guys frequent the internet.
I'm sorry i'm going to finish this post before i end up punching a wall lol.
If i ever decide to play WoW(i've never played it before)then i'll be sure to ask if you could show me the ropes.

Great article btw, made my day, it gave me a good laugh along with making me angry at the stupidity of some people(guys). Hope you've been treated better since you wrote it.

Humm...past few guilds I've been in in WoW have been headed by women, current one too. They were good guilds too, though I don't think it was due to our Guildmaster's gender. That said, alot of that stuff mentioned in the article takes place, however, we have quite a few female members, and anything like that is all done in joking manner, nothing serious, though we've had members leave because they took it too seriously. This goes for our realm too, which, maybe the fact that it's an RP/PvP realm has got something to do with it. It's a little weird, as we're all very mature when it comes to RP, but in the guild chat and 'RP' channel, it's all ASCII penises amongst serious RP discussion.

As for the rest, well, that kind of crap is off putting in most circumstances. I guess, though it's oft said, ignoring it is all you can really do. Nice article though, some of it was quite funny hehe.

Indeed, girls are not a rarity. In fact I think they make the best gamers - ability to multitask comes into its own playing games

Yeah, I'm not really sure the idea that women are better at multi-tasking then men is true.

Wouldn't it depend on what things you were juggling? For instance, if you put a baby in my girlfriends hands, I'm sure she could deal with that, while cooking up some mean pasta, and talking on the phone. Put a baby in my hands and that's all I'd be able to think about. I'd be unable to do much else. But, I'm not really great with other peoples children (and I don't have any of my own, yet.)

But, put a keyboard and mouse in front of my girlfriend and there's just no way she could type, talk, and play a video game at the same time. But I could do all that with my left hand alone!

I realize that's purely anecdotal, but my point is, I believe it completely depends on what tasks you're doing, and how comfortable you are with those said tasks.

Girls make fine gamers. Perfectly fine. But to say they're "better" just makes you sound like you're trying to get laid, or something. No offense.

None taken runtheplacered.

I understand your ideas although I was getting at the fact that in my experience women are more organised, thats why, as mentioned in previous posts a lot of (good) clans are headed by women

Amusing article,

I've always found the phrase GIRLZ DON'T EXIST ON THE INTARWEBZ to be falacious, since I know more girls who spend excessive time on the intrawebs than guys. Though I don't know as many female gamers, the ones who do game play a lot of WoW however.

what are you talking about, there are no girls on the internet. Even the girls on the porn sites are fake...*cough* not...not that I have ever been to one *looks around, closes curtain*.

that last sentence or two is obviously fake becuse I don't own a curtain. There are lots of girls on the internet, and some gamergirls but whenever there is a girl playing on live every guy instantly turns into the crocodile hunter (you know, minus the sintgray barb in his heart....what, too soon? [har-har that's a joke don't take that seriously])

"crikey! the rare GRLZ in xbox live! U never see these buggers around. They're incdredibly easy to beat (becuase they're naturaly born n00bs), and if they kick your ass they MUST be cheating...I;m going to try a cheezy pick up line and hit on this stranger that I've never met to see if she will show me her b00bs and we have hot sex0rz!!!!!1"

that's normaly how it goes. there's always that one or two guys.

Comments are TLDR.

Basically there's a number of factors to it, the first amoung them being the uncommon presence of estrogen. The internet is still predominately male with few girls and even fewer who speak out or make themselves known as girls and even fewer beyond those who are just some dude's girlfriend. When you account for the number of dudes pretending to be chicks whether it be to mess with people or to exploit them you introduce doubt in the integrity of all females. While it may seem like that should be a simple thing guys have been doing it to each other forever. All that said a double take or even a triple take is not something unreasonable and is to be expected.

Another of the factos is the number of teenagers on the internet, who natually have little or no experience with women as well as being hormonally unstable. I don't feel that this needs much explaining, these are your typical kids who freeze up talking to girls IRL and the same happens on the net. The key difference of course is that they can throw insults and denial around freely with no repercussions to escape from the 'crisis'.

"Pics or GTFO" This is an internet joke with a power level OVER 9000! It doesn't apply only to females and can be used in many situations, like a thread about Yagami Light plushies, and is of course meant as a joke by most people who use it. The only problems come in with the teenagers I mentioned above.

As brimstone mentioned just informing people that you're a girl is like a cry for attention whether you intend it that way or not. Most of the guys hit the brakes to watch whatever it is you do and naturally everything will crash if someone doesn't look where they're going. Girls and Guys are different and somewhere it's coded into genetics and society that these differences between guys and girl are to be excentuated infinitely. Things like brimstones story start rushing to the front of the male mind and it ruins the fun, thus the only thing left to do is make it so that the girl is one of the guys. Sometimes this happens in a good way and everyone gets along however usually it's easier to not take the risk and deny that the 'dude' is missing a few parts.

So what does all this boil down to? Homogeneity. The internet is made up of guys just hanging out with other guys having fun and the existence of chicks could ruin that balance. Everything is fine if the females are willing to just be one of the guys, there will be a ripple at first of course, however should they try to be a 'female of the internet' the homogeneity is broken and the fun ends. That is not to say however that the internet can only consist of females or only consist of males. In a way the guys of the internet do not have to possess testicles, as a female can easily just be one of the guys. Thus we reach my ultitmate point gender on the internet is meaningless, I can change my icon to that pink thing and have an avatar of george foreman... it simply doesn't matter. As silly as it may sound we are anonymous. We are formless. We are forever.

A nicely written article there. I choose my articles quite carefully as I hate the thought of wasting my time reading something quite dull but not actually realising it until my time has already been wasted, if you're with me? This particular article was a bit of a gamble though, the title suggested some rather dull reading (from my point of view), but I was pleasantly corrected. A good read, ta muchly.

The internet is such a big place, I hardly ever get bothered for being a girl. At EB Games though, I was once asked "where my man is" by the clerks.
z0mg Larenxis is a gurl?!?!?!1 Just kidding but seriously I didn't know that, just assumed... well, you know how it is. Damn stereotypes...
Yeah I often find myself being ashamed of others being immature about women being gamers as well. Happened quite recently on Halo 3 matchmaking, some tard thought it might be funny to give one of our teammates 2 options: "If you're a girl show your tits, if you're a boy stop talking you little *****." He got a sticky to the face from me after that one. Yeah sure he was my teammate but I can't stand that shit, and hate it even more if these people go unpunished.
Maybe it's not in my rights to play judge jury and executioner and the girl in question should've done something but in honor of the way my mom raised me I'll be as much as a gentleman towards girls as I can. So yes, I too am guilty of chivalrous behavior towards girls online without any other reason than them being a girl. Dunno, just seems right.

And yeah, judging by the amount of girls who posted here on teh infamus intarwebz, I'd say the myth of women not existing online has been busted.
