Random question time...

Anyone know what ice-XI, ice-XV, ice-VIII and ice-XII look like at all?

No? Well, if any physicists should come by, I'd like to know if any phase of ice (except ice-I and ice-XI) is stable at atmospheric pressure or capable of being stable at atmospheric pressure (namely, at sub-60K temperatures)...

Anyway, to add discussion value... what's awesome, in your opinion, about various existences of the chemical H[sub]2[/sub]O?

You can get low density amorphous ice if you rapidly cool water to low temperatures, below about 130K, and it is stable at atmospheric pressure. Other than that and the two you mentioned, I know of no other form of ice that is stable at atmospheric pressure.

Noooo! What about skiing!? Winter is my favorite season due to that sport. I don't care if the hills are icy, my snowblades do just fine!

From what I gleaned from wikipedia my legitimate trustworthy ice-physics source, Ice-I is standard ice, but the structure of Ice-XI seems to be identical to that of Ice-I.

EDIT: My reading comprehension skills continue to amaze me. Follow-up question: What does Ice-XI look like, exactly? Is there any difference from Ice-I?

But no, real ice-IX has a morph point of about 3000 atmospheres at 170K, whereupon it turns into ice-II... I think...

Rough guess here, its 20 years since I last did this kind of thing, but to the naked eye I don't think it would look any different. Ice X1 is slightly denser and has a marginally different refractive index but no fundamental changes from normal ice
