Random question time...

Anyone know what ice-XI, ice-XV, ice-VIII and ice-XII look like at all?

No? Well, if any physicists should come by, I'd like to know if any phase of ice (except ice-I and ice-XI) is stable at atmospheric pressure or capable of being stable at atmospheric pressure (namely, at sub-60K temperatures)...

Thank you kindly... >_>

Anyway, to add discussion value... what's awesome, in your opinion, about various existences of the chemical H[sub]2[/sub]O?

You can get low density amorphous ice if you rapidly cool water to low temperatures, below about 130K, and it is stable at atmospheric pressure. Other than that and the two you mentioned, I know of no other form of ice that is stable at atmospheric pressure.

I've no idea what the this is about, but I'm highly intrigued due to it's lack of stability...

...?

Okay Sckizo, you lost me. =P

However, for your discussion question... I hate ice due to the danger it poses on the roads during winter so give me water or steam please. A pleasant temperature for steam (think sauna) has to be my favorite form of H[sub]2[/sub]O.

the only thing I know about ice is that Ice-IX supposedly had a melting point at 91 degrees... though if I recall correctly it's a fictional concept.

There's more ice than just "ice"? o_O
This is weird :/
You should just stick to discussing football, there I can understand you :p

As for favorite "type" of water?
I think just as water, then you can drink it, use it for cooking etc etc.

I have no idea what those Roman Numerals refer to, but for discussion purposes, water is awesome because of its triple point, where it exists in all 3 phases at once.

Noooo! What about skiing!? Winter is my favorite season due to that sport. I don't care if the hills are icy, my snowblades do just fine!

OT: Sorry, can't really answer you there. From the title, I thought this was about booze on the rocks...

Is there a difference between Ice-I and Ice-XI?

From what I gleaned from wikipedia my legitimate trustworthy ice-physics source, Ice-I is standard ice, but the structure of Ice-XI seems to be identical to that of Ice-I.

EDIT: My reading comprehension skills continue to amaze me. Follow-up question: What does Ice-XI look like, exactly? Is there any difference from Ice-I?

I seem to do that a lot... but not just with you, of course... my mind is a weird place... you wanna talk troisieme-rang instead?! *cheesy grin*

Cat's Cradle... never read it, but Ice-nine was an intriguing idea...

But no, real ice-IX has a morph point of about 3000 atmospheres at 170K, whereupon it turns into ice-II... I think...

Fuckin' sequels.

Franchise milking, if I do say so myself.
More like midquels, really...

The real sequel is when ice is subjected to pressures high enough to turn it into a fuckin' metal! (not a joke)

Ice-XI is the proton ordered form of Ice-I... *shrug* You want a lecture in crystallography much? Not that I can give one, mind you! ¬_¬

Follow-up question: What does Ice-XI look like, exactly?
S'what I'm trying to figure out... -_-

Erm... nope, but thanks for directing me towards it...

Yah... I know what the crystal structure is and all... but I was thinking more after the actual physical appearance of it. *shrug*

Rough guess here, its 20 years since I last did this kind of thing, but to the naked eye I don't think it would look any different. Ice X1 is slightly denser and has a marginally different refractive index but no fundamental changes from normal ice
