LAN, no question. I'm not sure why anyone would prefer online to be honest, my brain can't work it out.
LAN parties are great, they really make for some epic moments, hearing your opponent scream from the other room, after you sneak up behind them for the third time in a row. Successfully stealing the flag while the rest of your team distract the enemy. Good times.

I loved LANs in highschool, but most LAN centers have died out over the years because your average person has a computer that can play games on minimum settings. LANs at people's houses is decent but is a pain to organize, get everyone to lug their rigs, and then the general heat makes it easier to just hang out and do other things. Note: When I think of LANs I think PC not something like 360, which I guess would be easier and more fun assuming a person had a big enough screen that multiple players can easily tell what is going on without squinting.
I like online better.. but thats cause I can play in my boxers and not have to shower.. LOL!
But seriously, I do like online better, because you don't have to be in a mood to have people around in order to play. (Plus when you are swearing your head off at the TK dumbass, you can just turn off your mic rather then actually let him know you hate him.. LOL!)

No, but seriously: Lan kicks online's ass. It's so much more fun talking and interacting with your friends, that's what gaming is all about, or atleast was....

LANs, naturally. It's always fun shouting "stop killing me or I'll come there and kill you for real". That doesn't really translate into online play.
LAN. There's food and you can win loyalties from others by saying "Hey, do you want a soda?"
people get on your side when you give them a 7-up.
anyway, i like lans better cuz it's more people, and it makes me feel like an actual person instead of playing against a bunch of people who don't have to type LOL every 4 seconds...they can actually LOL...
and you can call them out on it if they type lol and don't lol....

I miss the good ol days of LAN parties. How great was 4 people playing goldeneye or perfect dark in the sam room. It made for fun outside of just the game, having that interaction that videogames were made for. More and more games are taking the splitscreen out of games, and for the life of me I don;t know why.
