I had my only relationship via the internet which lasted just over a year and I got a trip over to America for 3 months out of it. I would do it again because through my experiences it seems only foreign girls or very 'un-Australian' girls are interested in me.
For the people who are talking about all the risks about dating online, there are things that any sensible person does because actually dating the person, what I would go by is at least a few months of talking and playing if it is on a game as friends. That includes chatting on FB, MSN or other IMs, get them to go on Webcam on multiple occasions, if they show any hesitation of doing this past the first time, there is something suss. Lots of different pictures, different times and events are good, and finally, talk to some of her long term friends or siblings. It may seem like a lot, but it really isn't and well, you guys know the internet. There was a study that proved online relationships last longer/are more successful then 'traditional' relationships because they are based on the attraction to ones personality rather then lust. It was something like 1 in 8 online relationships work and something like 1 in 30 'traditional' ones work. (Not sure on the exact figures, was a while ago when I saw this study)
As a quick side note, I used to play a neverwinter nights server where at least 3 or 4 couples had met either on that server or another game and were married with children.
