Depends, friendly competitive gaming is fun... but playing with jerks isn't (well, not even coop is fun with them).

I mostly play single-player games now. The only multiplayer I play is CSS with an online community and weekly SFIV with some local guys.
edit: but I was really good at Quake 3 for a while

It can be stressful if you are the last player left alive in a game mode in which you don't respawn.

Playing with jerks is fortunately a lot less prominent in MW2, the lack of a party system seems to have encouraged people to communicate and use team tactics, which makes the game twice as much fun.

You don't feel as bad about losing when everyone says 'good game' at the end, including the losers.

Nothing beats sneaking up behind yhour best buddy and knifing him in the back though (and it's fun to do it in games too)

*Scrapped the whole thing because i replied so fast that i didn't write it the way i wanted*

The thing is,i don't mind at all being competitive or others who do so.I actually like it,it's what makes it fun after all.
About the KD ratio,it's something that just shows you how good you are,it's up to you to take it too seriously or not. Most of the times i don't.If you will take it seriously enough then yes,it'll be tiring and will turn the game into anything but fun.

Now,about the jerks online.It happens,it's simple as that.There are in online gaming,in forums,in blogs,in real life etc.With other words,everywhere. xD You can't avoid that.
However-when i was playing COD4 (PC) i can't say that there were lots of times that i met jerks in-game.Now that i play a free FPS though, you can't imagine...

So,to wrap this up.When it's about the jerks, online or not,you can't avoid them.About being competitive though,i like it,it's fun. It's just how seriously someone takes it,for instance: If you'll play a basketball game in your neighborhood and in the end your team will lose, will you be bummed about it?Will you get angry? If yes, then you're taking it too seriously.

Anyway, this is all about POV.I preffer playing online because it's competitive and because i get to play against different people with different styles. It keeps me interested.

Yes. This is why I hate hardcore gamers. They forgot what video games are for.

I totally see where you're coming from.

I know it's a problem of mine and not really anything to do with the game but I find myself not playing online quite a lot of the time because I don't enjoy it unless I win. So I do go to SP games and I like the fact there's no-one trying to beat me (except AI of course, but that's easily handled)

Definitely especially when your having shit rounds on the bounce and your k/d is going down...and people who camp on one side of the map, just to continuously pick you off.

I usually play single player games cause I find them to be more fun. I will play the occasional multiplayer shooter though and I just try to have fun with it, I am fairly good at shooters though so I do get pissed if I'm getting slaughtered by the other team but overall I just try to stay relaxed and do my best to have fun. Unless I'm playing Battlefield, I don't fuck around playing Battlefield!

I got really good at COD4 after playing for ages. I'd always be in the top 3 of the scoreboard after a match. Then I stopped tsking it so seriously and just played casually seeing as I was at the top of the level ladder. Taking MW2 less seriously, I want to enjoy it without the pressure of having to get to lvl 70 or whatever the top is.

I never bother with the competitive side of things, and I believe that a positive KD spread means you're not playing recklessly enough. Thus, I can play CoD: WaW and other primarily competitive titles without actually worrying about competing. I can't outplay them, so I'll bury them in my corpses.

Single-player campaigns, on the other hand, get frustrating if you get stuck in one place, because I want to keep going with the narrative and the game is telling me I have to overcome this annoying obstacle to progress. In the old days, games had cheat codes to deal with these situations, but I'm seeing fewer and fewer of those in the new titles.

I used to take World at War pretty seriously since my K/D ratio was pretty good and I was usually the one who placed in first and wanted to keep it that way. Now I play a bit more relaxed in MW 2, not really caring what place I am in. Still get a little pissed when I don't place first or second, but as long as my kills are higher by one then my deaths, all good.

I always liked playing Resistance 2 Co-Op bettter than Competitive. Everyone just spammed miniguns anyway. Same thing for Halo and Borderlands. Coop is a lot more appealing to me.

Yes. I gave Xbox Live a go when I first got my xbox. Not very fun even though I won the few rounds I played so now I only do system link with friends.

I only ever played one game competitively, but it managed to remain VERY fun vs an equal opponent...

Im starting to get the feeling that nobody really wants to fight anymore just sit in a corner for the whole game and shoot whoever comes in

anybody else see this or is it only me?

IMO online shooters are not fun for me. Its more irritating if you think about it. Every irritating cliche known by man exists in online shooters. I mostly hate the campers, humpers, screamers, and the illogical booters.

I like both single-player games and online shooters. If I want to relax I play single-player, and if I want adrenalin rushes I play online. I enjoy both. But it probably helps that I'm generally quite good, and when I'm not doing well I take it easy and try to improve, or I find out what the others are doing wrong and blame them. It makes me feel good (even when I'm really all to blame myself.)
