Hypothesis: forty to fifty percent of Americans, no matter what party affiliation, lack a little something called logic.
That's exactly what a lot of conservatives want people to believe.

See, if they can convince people that everyone lacks logic to an equal extent, they can say whatever kinda crazy shit they want and get away with it. As long as people aren't busy actually judging what's going on, and think 'all politicians are corrupt' or 'Democrats and Republicans are basically the same--they're just incompetent in different ways' or some other kind of stance that doesn't allow one party to suffer a judgment any more harsh than than the other--even when the facts support that judgment--they can get away with all kinds of shenanigans and never get called on it.

basically, Conservatives and Republicans want Political Affirmative Action: they want people to ignore merit in making their voting decisions
So what you're saying is...well to be frank I got nothing out of that. So they want people to believe that other people don't have logic...so they can say things that logical people would realize is bogus...I don't know where you're coming from, or how that even relates to conservatives/republicans.

If a brief study of Zen has taught me anything, it's that self-deception is extremely easy and that most people are firmly deceived.

so the republicans aren't as stupid as you think. If Obama is really a true citizen, why can't he show his birth certificate and avoid the whole thing?

*joins ... in facedesking.*
I think their argument is that the black line covering the certificate number counts as an alteration, therefore invalidating Barack Obama's citizenship.

Yes, I just pulled that out of my ass.

Ann Coulter called the "Birthers" crazy. ANN FREAKING COULTER!!!

If she's calling you crazy, then either you're doing something good for civil rights; or you're completely, irrevocably, batshit lock-me-up-forever out of your fucking mind!
Ann Coulter said that? Well in that case I don't believe he born here either. He's a Martian.

You misunderstood my meaning of "5-star" program then. I myself have never watched Bill Maher and was working off of the assumption that he was in the vein of the Daily Show and The Colbert Report considering that he has been named in this thread as a comedian in a positive manner. Therefore, my "5-star" comment was under the assumption that it was A) a satirical piece or B) a show that poked fun at news without telling the whole truth.

So if it isn't either of those, then ignore that comment. My point still stands though; Sources. Need 'em.

Can't post in this topic, government watches my pc.

:(

Anyway, it doesn't matter what they feel or believe, because he's president anyway, and it is by far too late to do anything if they were going to attempt to make it illegal or something.

Firstly, Bill Maher is awesome. Secondly, republicans seem to have a tendency to not question anything their party says. They have a good deal of batshit talk show hosts who will make up things on the fly in order to convince people of their opinions. And the sheeplike masses listen to them. I'm glad to be a Democrat. We're suspicious enough of our own party. There's no danger of us being that ignorant and misled.

Basically, this is how I picture it.

Birther: "Yeah, he was born in umm... Kenya, didn't he say that?"
Liberal: "No, his father was Kenyan, he was born in Hawaii, we have his birth certificate to prove it."
Birther: "It's a fake!"
Liberal: "No, we confirmed it, besides, you have no proof that it is fake."
Birhter: "Well, uhh... Hawaii isn't a state!"
Liberal: "..."
Birhter: "McCain should be president!"
Liberal: "... something smells like Irony..."

McCain, by the way, was born in Panama, he is still a naturalized American citizen, due to the fact that he was the son of a naval officer that was sent to Panama. I don't know, I just find it ironic that the birthers (the people claiming Obama was born in Kenya) are claiming that Obama shouldn't be president, as it would, arguably, make more sense to say McCain wasn't born in the US, and doesn't qualify (I think the whole thing is just completely silly, and stupid.)

And, 42%, really? I don't know, that statistic just seems, inaccurate. Though, then again, many people are leaving the republican party, leaving only the hardcore, overzealous right.
You do know that 75.88799% of statistics are made up on the spot, right?

Wow, when Republicans have opinions, why is it ok to bash us?
Because this particular opinion is bat shit insane.

That 42% are why every one in the rest of the world thinks we are all idiots.

Obama had to get clearance from the FBI, NSA and CIA before they tell him anything (before World War 2, military intelligence took FDR off the list of people with top secret clearance temporarily because he threw away a document deemed classified in a waste bin) so they would have said something by now.
Actually its 58%. The 42% is how many republicans believe he was born in America.

Real Time with Bill Maher isn't exactly like the Daily Show or Colbert Report. He does start every show off with a bit of stand up, but the majority of his show consists of interviews with legitimate political figures. One interview one on one, sometimes with a high profile figure. The second half of his show is composed of a panel debate, again featuring legitimate political figures. He generally tries to have both liberals and conservatives, political authors, news figures (from Televised and Written news sources), governors, sometimes he'll have a more politically minded actor or musician on the panel too. There are lots of funny moments, but there is a lot of serious debate that goes on too.

Maybe, but, in that case the post I was responding to was incoherent, unless you're saying that even if he HAD a source the fact that he was "in the vein of the Daily Show and The Colbert Report" would somehow negate the effect of that source.

Which...is out of the frying pan, into the fire, isn't it?
Okay. If you're just going to keep ignoring my main point, I'm going to put it to you bluntly.

If they don't have sources, I don't believe it until I verify it through other sources or through my own work.

If you're going to continue to mince words, then please. Be polite enough to not reply.

Okay. If you're just going to keep ignoring my main point,
I never meant to address your main point. I only ever meant to correct you about Bill Maher.

Be polite enough to not reply.
Maybe you should have been polite enough to say "oh--did not know that about Bill Maher and that show" instead of asking: "Aren't you the one who is always wailing on about sourcing posts?"

Don't blame me for going into this kind of depth when you're the one who asked the question that kicked it all off.
Once again, you took my meaning wrong. And if you had just jumped to the point instead of mincing words, flat-out said what you were talking about (Like someone so kindly did above), I would have thanked you. As I did above. That comment on you was to point out that you are the one who wants people to source their work, and as far as I could realize, you were endorsing a man who A) Was not a legitimate source himself and B) had not sourced his work.

Do my words make more sense now? I'm not blaming you for misunderstanding me. Don't blame me for misunderstanding you.

"Honestly, _Real Time with Bill Maher_ is some of the best political programming you'll find on TV right now."

Could be taken any number of ways. The Colbert Report is, in its own way, political programming. And that's what I assumed Bill Maher was. Now then. I'm done here, as you are most likely going to mince my words and make me sound like some sort of idiotic, incoherent twat because I misunderstood you.

Excuse my humanity, sirs.
