I was rewatching last Friday's episode of Real Time with Bill Maher, and I must say, that statistic really stood out to me. I will admit, I have long been convinced that the Republican party had gone off the deep end, but even I was absolutely blindsided by this statistic. The fact that the birther movement could have such a sizable following is staggering, and really speaks to the type of intellectual crises that America faces.

Wait wait wait.

You're saying that stupid people believe stupid things?

Well ain't that a fancy little tidbit of info you've got there.

*facedesk* I am now ashamed to be American.
Why? Does their nationality have some direct correlation to you that would make you ashamed? America has a population of over 307 million. You're going to be ashamed 'to be an American' if even one of those people does something stupid?

Heh, of course they do. If you ask me, it's the whole black thing that inspires it. Did you know John MaCain was born in Panama?

It's a last ditch effort to override his presidency. Personally I don't care if Obama was born on mars, I just don't like the guy.

They're Republicans, what did you expect.
Well fuck, should I automatically believe that all Democrats are paragons of intellect?

I'm w/ this guy. I just don't like him, and I don't think things are much now than they would've have been if McCain was elected.

dont be so quick to judge the republicans.

You know, I thought the whole "Obama can't be president because he wasn't actually born in Hawaii" thing was a bunch of crap... and then I read the case of Major Cook.

Cook, a reservist, received orders sending him to Afghanistan in early July. He, with the help of an attorney that has been working this angle for awile, filed in court for an injunction to stay the deployment orders, citing Maj. Cook's objection to following what he believes to be an illegal order to combat, as he does not believe that Obama is qualified per the terms of the Constitution - - that he was not "natural born" in the United States.

Okay, up til there, this could just be political wrangling from a legal angle, coupled with a person undesirous to go to Afghanistan (though 'major' is a rank high eonugh that it takes some doing to get there; not likely to be tossed aside for small reasons).

Here's where it got interesting:

After the Major and his lawyer filed for the injunction and asked the court to demand the "long form original" of Obama's birth certificate (the one bearing the doctor's signature, place and time of birth, etc - - not the 'short form' cert produced earlier)... the Army recinded the Major's orders, without explanation.

Why? They wont bother presenting a stupid document that will completely destroy cooks case?

that is of course, if they actually have one...

so the republicans aren't as stupid as you think. If Obama is really a true citizen, why can't he show his birth certificate and avoid the whole thing?

i still think obama is a citizen, since i would think they would have dug deeper during his campaign. But that case raises some questions.

I'm not in the least bit surprised, though I wasn't expecting this much bile to rise in my throat as a result.

I think it's an attempt to avert shame by association. Might be pointless, but lord knows quite a few of us have been apologizing to the rest of the world for the past six or so years about some of the things our last president did.

Bill is hardly an unbiased news source.

That being said, everyone knows he was born on Krypton.

This pretty much sums up my opinion on the matter. Whether or not he was born in another country means little to me. What he does with his power is what I watch, and quite frankly, I don't like him either.

Honestly, I noticed the same thing. I believe the company that keeps those sorts of documents in digital form is one of the companies that funded Obama's campaign (and they're based in Chicago as well). It's a curious relationship.

the "Certificate of Live Birth" can be obtained without presenting an actual "long form Birth Certificate" signed by a physician and attesting actual place and time of birth, and it takes no conspiracy at all to do so - - just a couple of people willing to lie to a county clerk, one US citizen parent, and the ability to present a living baby.

plus, did you read the cook case? why couldn't they just show the document and be done with it?

I think their argument is that the black line covering the certificate number counts as an alteration, therefore invalidating Barack Obama's citizenship.

Yes, I just pulled that out of my ass.

Ann Coulter called the "Birthers" crazy. ANN FREAKING COULTER!!!

If she's calling you crazy, then either you're doing something good for civil rights; or you're completely, irrevocably, batshit lock-me-up-forever out of your fucking mind!

No no, there's a company that supplied the "official digital copy," but the company was one of the major contributors to Obama's campaign.

And, as we all know, anything digital can be shooped.

[edit] Just to be clear, I don't really give a shit. I don't really care for him either way, and I'm not going to make a fuss about something that's already happened that I gave even less of a shit about the first go around.
