Most of the gamers I know are generally guys - I live in a very small country although I've heard of girl gamers being better in some ways e.g paying more attention to detail as compared to guys e.g more aggressive(?)

I want to know what you guys think. Doesn't have to be any specific genre but maybe better to first mention the genre.

I heard somewhere that women have marginally slower reaction times but higher accuracy. But this experiment was not in games, but with a lightgun shooting at a target. Holding a controller is different from holding a gun and looking at a screen so it may make no difference.

Truth is ANYONE can kick your ass in a game. Young, old, male, female. If they have dedicated themselves to it. It just may be people remember getting their ass kicked by a girl more often.

More important factors:
-good sleep
-good nutrition
-physically active
-dedication

Now if females for whatever reason do these more than males, then they might have and edge. I know when I eat bad and sleep little I can just FEEL myself slipping, I do dumb mistakes and am like "Why did I do that? How did I forget that? Where did that rocket come from?".

The worst thing I do is I see something I shouldn't shoot, decide "hmm, better not shoot that" and still like a fraction of a second later I've shot it and I'm like "WHYYYY BRAIN! Aiming cortex, I asked for speed but you betrayed logic orders! RUARGHHH!".

Women might be physically fitter for social pressures, and might sleep better because... I dunno.

Sleep is the major one though.

Also putting more hours into any one game you will be way better. Women more committed to one game?

In my experience, girl gamers are the most ridiculously skilled players you will ever find in any FPS game. They will kill you, then kill you, then kill you again, and then kill you a fourth time but only after having waited until you were certain that you were about to claim the upper hand.
I theorize that this was my experience because the scarcity of girl gamers means that only the really, really skilled ones end up sticking around in the standard FPS atmosphere.

<Obligatory warning, that saying people must be different because of their gender, is stupid - here>

I notice a pattern of girls sticking to RPGs.
A few girls I know say they find fast paced games too frantic, but the ones who don't usually kick my ass at any competitive game.

This thread has potential to perpetuate some stereotypes. The girls I know who would describe themselves as gamers are equally skilful and aggressive as their male counterparts; whether the latter quality is considered "masculine" is for society to decide.

Although I do always choose a female character in L4D because I find I'm more likely to be healed by my hairy team-mates.

Even if you want to compare them directly, I don't think I've heard of girl gamers playing competitively. They seem to play more co-op games than the standard multiplayer gametypes.

And honestly, I don't notice any difference between them and their male co-op companions.

PS. There's gonna be a lot of flaming in this topic. I hope your body is ready.

Korean female Starcraft champion.

and there are plenty of female competative gamers, they are just put in their own "special league".

and that is the thing, for some idiotic reason, the world of gaming have decided that there has to be a "normal" league and a "womens" league, even though as mentioned above there has been no evidence that there is any grounds for making any difference between men and women in gaming.
and then as with any sport, the female version gets much much less attention, and the attention these tournaments do get is kind of "they will spank you and kick your ass, and since they are women, that is hot"...

if you ask me, they should shut down the female leagues completely and have these women compete in the normal tournaments instead.

then perhaps the excuses about "people only went easy on you because you are a girl" when one wins over a guy can disappear...

OT: in my experience there is no difference, the one who plays the most will preform the best at any game, the only difference is that there will be a higher chance of you meeting a skilled male gamer rather than a skilled female gamer, but that is not so much biology as much as a male dominated community, but that is changing pretty fast

I call bullshit with physically active, at my local internet cafe the best Gamer is an incredibly over-weight guy who sleeps all day when he's NOT at the ecafe.

Face it, when you waste your life playing video games, you're going to be marginally better than one who balances it out. Case CLOSED

Well guys have a pronounced competitive nature, so we tend to care more about the mechanics, will this shinny new sword have a +5 to strength to make me a godlike ************?

And girls tend to have a pronounced aesthetic appreciation and social nature, will this shinny new sword match my outfit and how will others react?

Ofcourse the roles are never set in stone we just have a subconscious tendency to those, just like boys tend to like girls and girls tend to like boys.

they split starcraft based on gender?...thats bullshit

(and there goes my dreams of being starcraft pro..moving to korea and become a SUPERSTAR...no Ive never played starcraft but one step the a time ok?)

I was about to say unlike physical sports theres not much difference...sure mabye there is some difference in the brain

but still in the end..if your dedicated enough then it shouldnt affect your skill level, becuase some girls think like guys and vice versa (really somtimes I think I think like a guy)

as for me Id say my skill level is rather low...as much as I love games

Ahh ha, but apply scientific method: how much better could be be if he keeps up the sleep and game dedication yet also got exercise and was in good shape. I know, only so many hours in the day... but it's possible.

I see your internet cafe and raise you the last tournament I heard of, the champion was a veteran from Iraq who remained in top shape, he won by a wide and consistent margin but he said he applied principals of training: dedication, practice, physically fit and good sleep before an "operation".

The thing is an hour a day can put you in good condition combined with a good diet, that can't be at too much of a cost in gaming-time. PS: I'm a fatty, but I'd rather not be. I'm just lazy

One of those hairy team-mates might be me >.< Stereotype working for the benefit of receiver than? Just a suggestion.

OT: Some of my friends say that girls do better cause they pay more attention to details e.g game mechanics, but one of my gaming girl friends is very much happy off sniping. She doesn't pay attention to details.

To back you up here; a more physicaly fit person will require less sleep and will have a more effective sleep thus actualy gaining time in the day due to less sleep. This makes up for lost time due to exercise.

Being Male or Female, to me, doesn't make you worse/better at a game,or any other crap.

I play CoD with about 9 Males friends, I'm way ahead of them when it comes to performance and K/D etc. but it's not because I'm Female; I just so happen to be better at it than them, just like they'd be better at FIFA or GT5

Girls get amusingly butthurt when they take themselves seriously. Played against the Frag Dolls on Halo 3, beat them, and the rage was hilarious. Trash talk went from "Oh, please take it easy on me, I'm a girl" to all the dick insults you can think of. At least guys are predictable in this regard.

Other than that, I dunno. I wouldn't say there is any kind of quantifiable difference between genders when it comes to gaming, other than the obvious "guys tend to play more games than girls". When I compare the people I know, guy gamers tend to be better in a multiplayer situation (which, honestly, is the only real way to compare directly), but that is more than likely a result of playing more often/taking it more seriously.

Though, I will say girls tend to spend a long time in customization if its availble. I've seen female friends spend HOURS in the character creators on games like Oblivion and Mass Effect, to no real dicernable end other than dicking around. Most guys I know tend to either use a default or create somone who looks like them or a character they like.

Female gamers have a disadvantage in the FPS genre because they have a slower reaction to visual stimuli.

Well, my better half always beats the crap out of me and fighting and puzzle games, if that helps. She tends to play a lot of RPGs, too, particularly favouring the Final Fantasy series.
