I made this topic as a sort of companion topic to my (opinions on Windows 7 topic in off-topic disscussion, but this more focuses on this one specific thing.)

So what's your opinions on games dropping Windows XP support.

Well not many games have yet though it seems like in the coming years, less and less games will support XP, such as Battlefield 3, Just Cause 2, and shattered horizon (probably more but I don't know) and so what do you guys think? Is it a bad more or good move?

Imho, its a good thing? Why? Becuase if games keep supporting XP, sure it will have a longer life-span but it is holding back development and so games need to include DX9 support, BF3 will only support DX10/11 most likely then it will be a game that really pushes the limits due to it not being pulled back by the limits of a 10 or so year old OS and DX.

I still use XP because i prefer the interface over Vista and 7, so i'd be rather irritated if games dropped XP support.

Not everyone lives in a first-world country and has the capabilities to update their computer every four years. I know I must seem like a whiny *****, but it's true; I personally am going to have to wait two years before my parents are willing to buy me a new computer. So I'd definitely be pissed about losing XP support.

I just think that it shows what a minority target audience "high-fidelity" PC-games are targeting. I mean, if you drop support for 55% of the market, you're apparently targeting a very specific segment of the market - a kind of player that always is on the bleeding edge, hunting the newest trends - they may as well axe support for all GPUs older than 2,5 years as well.

Not that this behaviour is that new. I noticed it 5 years ago already and stopped playing these kinds of games alltogether, plus this obsession with bleeding edge games basically is also what Shamus talked about in "How the GPU killed PC-Gaming". The only special thing here is, that we for the first time get it told straight into our face: "We're fine with axing support for 55+ percent of the market. We're not targeting joe average - we're targeting tuning freaks."

That would piss me the hell off. I've been using XP for years and really am comfortable with its' interface. Vista was and still is garbage. I don't know about 7 because I haven't tried it yet. I guess I'm an old fogey for wanting to stick with XP but I hope it doesn't happen anytime soon.

I am still running XP but within the next week or so I am getting 7, I hope it's alot like XP. Unfortunately, I know it's going to be nothing like it.

Why do companies assume new = improved, leave everything were it is and nobody will have to learn a whole new system.

(Looking at you facebook, STOP IT! Or I swear to god I will get pissed off and do nothing about it!)

accutaly you will be surprised, I found the transition from XP to 7 a smooth one, it was not that different from XP.

I don't really have a problem with it. If you are unable to upgrade because of a lack of money then you probably won't be in any position to have a computer that is capable of playing the games that will be coming out without the support for XP.

Been using 7 exclusively for almost a year now. Plus this might mean a move toward games with better 64-bit support, which would be a huge benefit from a performance standpoint. \

Maybe. I really don't know how that kind of stuff works.

I mean, do CPU manufacturers even make exclusively-32-bit CPUs anymore? And pretty soon having systems with better that 4 gigs of ram is going to be a lot more common. Windows 7 64-bit support is still a little sketchy from a drivers standpoint, but it's gotten WAAAY better in the last year or so.

People still supporting XP would be like if people still supported the GameCube or Xbox. Hell, I think people should be thankful for the fact it lasted as long as it did. I'm just pissed W2000 didn't last long at all.

i think it's stupid to drop support of anything thats the most widely used. XP is still the most used OS to date, as far as i know.

Was accutaly going to make an analogy using the PS2 and PS3, basicaly:

It would be like asking to play PS3 games on a PS2 and why they don't support them, its becuase of the better hardware...

Ya know... I better worded that in my head. :p

I'm using XP right now. Not that my computer which is just as old as XP could run these games, but I wonder what percent of computers still have XP on them?

Wether we like it or not, XP will one day be "old".
It's what EVERY game company does.
There are no more NES games being produced. Why is that? Simply because technology advances.
Hell, who knows what comes next?
Virtual Reality games where you shoot holograms on a huge outdoor field?
It just happens. No more Xbox, only 360, no more PS1, no more PS2, only PS3.
No more NES, only Wii.
Shit just happens, and it doesn't matter how much we like the old school games, one day they will be replaced by newer, more technologically advanced games!
Do you think that anyone who played Super Mario 3 on the NES ever thought that Nintendo would make a console where you have to jump around in your living room? Probably not.
So, XP is not an eternal option.
Though I still like XP :p

Oh come on, Windows 7 is far from "the newest trend".
The fact that there is still support for XP is the surprising thing here, no other OS was supported that long after its life-cycle had already ended.
The biggest problem with XP is DX9, why should developers go the extra mile just to appease cavemen who still use XP? It's not a small task to make a game run with DX10, 11 and 9.

I mean, I liked XP, I never used Vista, but at some point you just have to say goodbye and upgrade.
Getting 7 for free from MSDNAA might have also helped.

Well they can't support it forever, they have to move on to so they can create more advanced tech, just like it will be with Vista, 7, and whatever comes up next.
