I still use XP because i prefer the interface over Vista and 7, so i'd be rather irritated if games dropped XP support.

Not everyone lives in a first-world country and has the capabilities to update their computer every four years. I know I must seem like a whiny *****, but it's true; I personally am going to have to wait two years before my parents are willing to buy me a new computer. So I'd definitely be pissed about losing XP support.
These two are pretty good arguments. Especially the first; when there's actually some grey area over whether XP is better than Windows 7 (vista definitely,) you're going to have loads of people still using XP, and it'd be a bit of a dick move to just stop making games for those people. And it'd also be a dick move to tell them to suck it up and get a new OS. Some people don't want to, or can't afford it.

I'm on a mac so it doesn't affect me, but I don't think they should keep supporting it. Maybe some games need it for better graphics support or something (I'm not sure,) but definitely not all of them.

Video games rely completely on computer technology. It should come as no surprise to gamers that they will need to upgrade frequently.

This will help developers make games more efficiently so it is a good thing.

I don't mean to be insensitive to all the people using XP, but it's about damn time. XP has been holding us back for too long and while much of that was a good thing, it is time to move on. XP has had its romp, and it's been a fantastic one, but if you expect to use XP on a machine you build today, then why didn't you install Windows 98 on your last machine? The OS can no longer properly support modern hardware, and any performance problems you are expecting with installing a cutting edge OS that can be alleviated by installing a decade old OS are pretty much moot.

My only concern is the DX9 support which has been prevalent for so long, even before Vista. Then I remember I'm running a 3 year old card and it has DX10 on it. If you don't have a card with DX10, you probably aren't a PC gamer and won't be complaining anyway.

Also, while it has been available in the past, I feel in my gut that Windows 7 is going to be the dawn of ubiquitous 64-bit computing. I know some Steam stats proved my notion a while ago. At this point, fighting the change from XP is on the verge of being completely silly.

I'd be fucked, because I can't afford a operating system upgrade, and I sure AS HELL won't buy another computer.

However, this is assuming that I actually play games on my PC...

Windows XP has been out for over nine years now.

I don't see why it's unreasonable to drop support for it. I understand it's a well-liked OS (I used it before this new PC came with Vista 64 literally about two weeks before Win7's release) but it's run its course and it's had its day. I mean, you've probably all replaced your CRT monitors from nine years ago for something plasma, LCD or CRT.

It's a great operating system, but continuing support for it would be holding games companies and therefore holding gaming itself back.

It's bound to happen eventually, and sooner is better than later when it comes to computer software. I mean, it's nine years old now; it's practically ancient in terms of today's technology.

"opinion's" is not plural. it is a contraction. and as i said-"opinion is on dropping windows XP game support" makes no sense. watch your rogue apostrophes.

[dick] Hey guys, remember back when publishers started switching from CD-ROM to DVD-ROM, and a bunch of guys were whining about how they didn't have a long established peripheral that had been shipping with pre-built PCs for years? Yeah, that's you. Stop your bitching, and stop trying to hold back progress.[/dick]

Seriously folks, PC gaming requires upgrades and rebuilds. This is not news. If you plan things carefully, you can get away with doing this less often than the console folks. XP was a good operating system, and thanks to Vista it had a longer run than most. But that run is coming to an end. MS got it right with Win7. The successor has arrived, and it is good. And hey! DirectX 11 is here! Just imagine the difference you'll see moving from DirectX 9.

Now I just have to go upgrade my hardware(it's finally hitting the point that even minimum settings is stressing things).

Wouldn't be so bad if Windows Vista/7 didn't have such terrible legacy support when it came games (amongst other applications, but that's another argument for another thread). Lack of legacy support just turns the PC into another console.

edit: Sorry let me recant that last statement. The Wii, with its virtual console, has better legacy support than a Windows 7 PC.

This discussion is timeless... I remember when there was an uproar when it was announced Diablo 1 wouldn't run under Windows 3.1x and you'd be forced to switch to Windows 95... a system becomes obsolete and is discontinued, nothing more to it.

Too bad. I always enjoed XP. I'm no PC buff, but I just enjoyed how nice it all was. However, I got 7 for a rather good deal, and I don't game on the PC all that often, so It's not a big deal for me. Still, it sucks for the people who still enjoy XP to this day.

The computer industry moves forward. We're up to DirectX 11, guys. There's really no reason to complain. Windows XP was the longest lasting version of Windows to ever receive support from Microsoft.

I am still running XP but within the next week or so I am getting 7, I hope it's alot like XP. Unfortunately, I know it's going to be nothing like it.

Why do companies assume new = improved, leave everything were it is and nobody will have to learn a whole new system.

(Looking at you facebook, STOP IT! Or I swear to god I will get pissed off and do nothing about it!)
accutaly you will be surprised, I found the transition from XP to 7 a smooth one, it was not that different from XP.
Don't tease me, it's been a very bad week ... if your not teasing, thank you! It will make my week a little better.

I really hope the start menu is nothing like the standard XP one, much prefer classic layout.

Times roll on, software advances. Keeping everything tied back to XP compatible could hamper the future - as many have said, you don't get much backward compatibility with consoles and yet people seem to think that a 9 year old bit of software should still be supported by everyone and everything.

Obviously, that's easy for me to say, having been using 7 for a long while now and loving it - if I was still on XP I would naturally be annoyed that my platform was no longer being supported, but fundamentally I've got a decision to make, just as I did when my comp was no longer being able to run modern games - upgrade or deal with it.

Progress happens, and whether its the graphics card, CPU, more RAM, a completely new machine or a new operating system, part of the basic facts of running a gaming PC is the need to eventually upgrade.

You're not loosing support, you're just not getting access to some of the newer software. Nothing is getting taken away, but times are moving on. 'Sides, you don't need a particularly special machine to run Win7 (or a lot of money, if you're a student), though you might need a graphics card that can handle Dx10 if your machine missed out on that wave of hardware.
