I tried out the Space Marine demo on steam, and I have to say I'm disappointed. I'm not a hardcore fan of the 40k series, but I read a few books and think the universe and different races and marine chapters were cool, so I thought I'd try this game out. After loading up the demo off steam, my first reaction was to try to shoot the Orks while taking cover (Like most other 3rd person shooters) and it turned out to be difficult. I feel like the aiming was off and the Orks just zerg'd you so I resorted to the melee combat... and never stopped. The melee combat seemed like it was the focus when the game was being made, but even with that it meant that I was reduced to just hitting the right mouse button over and over again, sometimes mixing it up with another key to stun and heal.

TL:DR Thought I'd like the game but it turned out to be a one button wonder I didn't enjoy. This is just my opinion though and I'm curious to see how others feel.

Now with 100% more spell check

Shoot the Orks shooting you, stab the Orks stabbing you, cover is for pussies.
Whats not to like?

I enjoyed it quite a bit. Every time I got bored of melee, I switched to ranged and vice-versa.

Whether that could carry me through a whole game? Eh, even though the melee combat is incredibly simple and basic, I find it pretty fun.

I'm a hardcore 40k fan, and I must say Relic have done a good job. The combat feels every bit as bloody as it should be, and it actually FEELS violent rather than just looking it.
Though I have been a fan of Relic since Homeworld, their first game, so I may be just a bit biased.

I found it refreshing and fun. I was getting tired of third person cover based shooters and when I that th space marine game would be a third person shooter I groaned. Then I try the demo and at first I was a little put off. The controls sounded simplistic and I figured it'd get repetitive. I have played the demo everyday since it went on the PS3 and I'm STILL not bored. I even give myself fun mini challenges such as: Only use chainsword and bolt pistol, on hard, without using grenades or fury. Needless to say the simplistic gameplay is very evocative of 40k tabletop while still requiring finesse and the health system requires a fair bit of forethought, making it a lot more tactical then "Shoot people, hide behind cover til healed, throw a grenade if you're feeling spicy". Also the customization feature looks godly O.O

i enjoyed it. buy a gamepad imo.
to be fair if you need a gamepad to enjoy a game ported to pc then the developer has failed. mouse and keyboard can be enjoyable in everything from racing (not perfect but i have completed games this way), through shooters, plat formers and action games.

The key is making it about the timing (ala assasins creed), or make the combat very free flowing (batman arkham assylums pc port managed this very well).

The OP's condemnation of this title has pushed it down my want list if im honest.
You should try it yourself if you have steam, I don't think I'm weaving a false story of the game experience, but I'm just some guy on the internet and it would be better if you try it yourself or have a friend play it.

Didn't like it.
Followed the updates as the game progressed and really looked forward to it.

The whole......'you will play as a marine in power armour so can wade into swarms of orks and butcher them!' was awesome.

I got into the demo, walked into the first mob of orks hacking and slashing all round me as a marine should do, only to kill maybe 1 or 2 then got gunned down quite quick.

Next I then had a lot of success sort of hiding in cover and shooting....so pretty much another run and gun cover based shooter!

I'll rent it as it may still have potential but after the demo I wasn't impressed.

It'll be dead island for me come the 9th Sept

Sorry, I'm coming off a cold.

A friend of mine keeps telling me to get the demo, and asking me if I was going to get the game. I have done neither yet. Right now debating if I should download the demo on my laptop, my 360, or just do my homework.
I'm leaning towards homework.

Even if it was on hard, you must have been doing something wrong. You need to stun and then grab them to heal yourself in combat, and even then be careful of the heavy orcs. If you want to be a god in the game play on easy.

It wasn't that way for me. Even on hard. I think it comes down to how you attack them with your melee weapon and how well you can time and chain the combo moves. Taking special care to use the stun attack as a final combo attack and only going in for the executions when you're low on health and when you're not surrounded.

As to the OP, I was actually kind of impressed. Considering Relic has primarily done only real-time strategy games, it's not only impressive that they transitioned so competently to a 3rd person action game, but also managed to not just make a Gears of War clone. The concentration on melee combat more than ranged makes the game feel very Warhammer40k, but also makes it feel much more cathartic and visceral.

Now, it remains to be seen what kind of surprises Relic has in store for the full game, and what (if any) variations to the game-play will show up throughout. (the jet-pack was fairly fun, if not that "new") That said, if the demo is only a taste of what's to come, then I may very well pick this game up. And, I'm not even really a WH40K fan.

Needs more variety. The one combo gets boring fast. I tried to like it, but the WH20K series just takes itself so seriously, I just can't get into it.
Nah you can try stun combo's, like if you hit attack 3 times then stun the marine stomps the ground and everyone around gets stunned. But yah it feels worryingly repetitive, but in the demo there's the section with the shoota nobz and the suicide bombers which if you tried going all out melee like you would before that you keep dying so it forces you to use ranged combat.

I am curious though how the multiplayer will work. I'm under the assumption the jetpack class will be OP'd looking at how it is in singleplayer.

Also can someone please tell me how the Vengance launcher works? It doesn't seem to do anything. Like at all and did anyone notice you could use a power ax on the final wave on the Inquisitor?

I loved it but i'm biased because i'm a huge 40k fan.

The melee combat is solid and looks very brutal. The bolter seems a little but to machine-gunny for my taste though.

Your cold has spontaneously caused me to fix a spelling error I noticed in my title... and homework is always a good option, regardless of game.

The launcher is a det-mine layer. You press reload to detonate them. Also, I believe you can place up to...what...8 of them? Can't remember.

And yes, I found the ax and loved it more than the chain-sword. You lose the area stun combo, but the extra attack swings and the wicked executions make it my choice.

Tried the power axe during the end part of the first demo mission? It feels... godly, somehow.
